I do hope you a keeping an album with all the pictures - if you ever sell the car just say to the potential buyer - these 950 shots are what I did with the oil tank - it's a good guide to what I did with the rest of the car I'd buy it just on the basis of the oil tank

I'd buy it just on the basis of the oil tank Would you cut tha body off and weld it onto a Nissan Stanza or something? The next item on my list is the removeable filler neck. I originally got a brass socket and a reducing bush. The socket has already been machined. So the next job is to machine the bush so I can fit the tube for the filler neck into it. Made a bit of a start tonight but not much as it was pub quiz night. I recovered the bit of tube from the old 911 tank I cut up. It turned out that there wasn't quite enough material in the inside of the reducing bush for me to work with, so I got a reducing nipple instead. I only need the large 2" BSP thread so I cut the top bit off to get an Idea of how much stuff there is to go at. It looks plenty, I can bore it out to fit this bit of pipe. As the nipple has a tapered thread, which I don't want, I ran a die nut down it. That is not strictly true, the die nut is nearly 100mm across the flats and I don't have a spanner to fit it. I put the die nut in the vice then screwed the part into it. I am hoping to get to my mates soon to machine it up on his lathe.

Now Mr teaboy remember this forums policy - can't say something nice - say nothing Hello Bstardo you are a handsome devil. (is that nice enough? ) I called at my mates on the way home tonight and started to machine my other brass bit. I didn't get it completed though, as I ran out of time. I was late getting there due to an accident on the M18. Looks like this at the moment. The bit of pipe now fits into it. I need to machine a fair bit more off of it as it still weighs a ton.

Anyhow, pub quiz? How did you do?

No doubt if someone on the team had listened to somone else when the right answer was proffered you'd have won. Isn't that always the case? This weekend I have had an in laws 50th birthday and the nippers dance awards presentation to attend, so the oil tank has been a bit neglected. What I did do was to realise that a bit I had already made (twice) needed to be remade again. Whilst I was measuring up to get an idea about where the maximum oil level was going to be I noticed that one of the breathers was going to be very close to being submerged. I thought if I rotated the pipe, due to the kink in it, it would move it up a fair distance. That did mean that I would need to remake the top baffle. I was not totally happy with the front half of the top baffle, so I have made another one. AGAIN! I'm hoping it is third time lucky.

I'm hoping it is third time lucky. Well if not you could just gaffer an old pop bottle in the wing. I've got a mouldy bit of plywood on standby to make my bumper.

I'm hoping it is third time lucky. Well if not you could just gaffer an old pop bottle in the wing. I've got a mouldy bit of plywood on standby to make my bumper. Having thought about it, that was actually the fourth version and not the third. The pop bottle is starting to sound quite attractive. Tonight I did a bit more machining. This bit is a 964 oil filter console. It is fitted to the inner wing in the engine bay with these studs. They go in here. (screwed all the way in, obviously) They have rubber bushes and a washer and nut. The nuts tend to seize into the studs. When you go to a Porsche breaker for one of these, the monkey that removed it unscrewed it and found that the nuts were seized, so the stud unscrewed from the console. Instead of fitting the studs back in once it was removed, said monkey just chucked them away. These things are not available as a spare part, so I was forced to make some. I also completed the machining on the base of the filler tube. This bit screws into the bit which fits in the top of the tank. Then the tube will be fitted in like this. The tube will extend down inside well beyond the threaded joint, removing the need for a seal. Flushed with the success of all this I shortened the filler cap receiver. The parting tool dug in and spat it out of the chuck. Oh dear! I may not have said...

I feel your pain - and on a board that quite rightly bans profanity am helpless to express the depth of sympathy and frustration by proxy (frunchausen?) being felt here right now
Hope it all rights itself as painlessly as can be
Cheers

I will get over it, but only once I have managed to locate a new filler neck. In the meantime there was this... I found myself looking at the top of the tank in situ. You can't really tell from the picture but the angle of the top surface of the tank is shallower than the angle of the 'bucket' in the wing. The back is about 10mm lower than the front. I was thinking that the filler cap will be at the wrong angle and will look rubbish. I toyed with the idea of cutting the top of the tank off and starting again... Before I reached for the grinder I decided to mock up the cap in position to see what it looked like. Hmmm, I'm still not sure... I wonder what it will look like with the seal in place. Well, I can live with that. In the post above, I tried to convince myself that I would not mind the filler cap being at the wrong angle... Today I faced up to the inevitability of my OCD and cut the top off of the tank. The back end of it needs to be about 10mm higher, so I cut a strip of metal and welded it on. Then started to replace the bit I cut off. Because the tank tapers towards the top the removed section was too long, so I cut it in half and will do one side at a time, and shorten it to suit. I got one half done, hopefully the other half will go on tomorrow. Then I need to modify the front to match. Going out now for a carvery with Mrs tea and the in-laws.

You really ought to remove the rest of the bodywork and just drive around on your floorpan with the oil tank on display :-)
Please keep at it as you are King OCD

Sorry but ^ that was inevitable Yes, I suppose it was... I'm just surprised it took as long as it did You know I'm not that fast. Just finished reading the entire thread... superb attention to detail and brilliant workmanship. Enviously bookmarked... Thankyou. I'd have this bolted to the boot floor by now But I love that you haven't! :-) Keep up the Masterclass, please I discounted the front mounted oil tank early on because I wanted to retain some practicality, and luggage space. You really ought to remove the rest of the bodywork and just drive around on your floorpan with the oil tank on display :-) Please keep at it as you are King OCD Thanks mate, OCD is just one of my mental and physical disorders. This afternoon I finished off the back half of the extended tank. This is how much higher it is now, not much but it will hopefully make all the difference. I have also made a start on the front half aswell. But it is not done yet, I'll keep you informed.

'kin ell, 5 1/2 pages on just the oil tank - and it's not finished yet!!! I suppose now wouldn't be a good time to suggest installing it on the nearside to improve the weight distribution on a RHD car?!! I've read this thread from the beginning today and I'm totally blown away with your skill set, planning and attention to detail. The fact that the majority of the detail work will never be seen and yet still you aim for the highest standards is what makes this even more special. This will be one very, very special 911 when it's completed. Love it, keep going mate. Cheers, Richard.
