The Cortina is nearly on the road, and I've decided it needs more power. I've been told it'll need a Sierra box if I want 5 speed, and a Zetec 2litre lump to make the most of it. I'm interested to know what's involved in a conversion and what parts I'll need. I'm guessing it'll need new engine mounts but what else is involved. It already runs a 2000E box, which although is only 4 speed, is a tough box. Would it be better to stick with this and just source a modern Zetec lump? Cheers, Olson.

Also, what sort of quarter mile times could I expect from a 2litre motor?

I think if you stick with the 2000e you would heve to put straight cut gears in it for the kind of power a tuned 2L would put out. (200bhp with throttle bodies and cams!). SO maybe better to go to a serria type 9. (The ones from 2.8 capris are better ratios but more expensive) For the conversion you will need engine mounts, water rail to move the thermostat from the back of the engine, some kind of exhaust system, some kind of ECU and induction system. and more! theres alot of info on www.turbosport.co.uk

I don't know how heavy your car is but you can work out the power to weight and get an idea, I think the most powerfull standard 2 liter zetec was the 2.0si models with 136bhp (may be wrong). My brother wants to do the same conversion to his midget but we've not looked into it yet

www.zetecinside.com/xr2/index.htmgood site for fitting a zetec. Most parts are available from retro ford (not the magazine) to fit into rwd ford vehicles. Works out quite expensive if you want to buy everything though. Water rail kit (as slater said) costs neck end of £200. Suitable sump costs around £200, engine mounts £200 etc etc.. Looking at around £2000 for everything to have it straight forward and running. Of course most parts can be fabricated yourself to at a fraction of the cost. Its possible to use the standard ecu and ignition but its an on and as its only 135 bhp you might as well do as slater says and fit TB`s an aftermarket ecu and cams for 200bhp. Not sure for certain but I think if the power steering pump is removed then you need an idler fitting in its place otherwise the water pump is driven the wrong way.

I've been told the 1800 cvh sump fits a 2.0 zetec,
Also ford type 9's are a bit on the weak side, also have a curse word gearchange. Unless you intend doing loads of motorway miles the 4 speed out of a 1600 Mk3 capri is loads better, with a very slick shift and capable of handling loads of power.

Thanks guys, we're gonna fabricate most of the mounts etc ourselves as this whole car is being done on a budget (would have had a lot more money to play with when I sold the Notch and the Splitty, but the missus said I had to pay some debts off!). Think I'm gonna go with the 2000E box for now and see how it feels. I'm currently on the look out for the Zetec lump, ebay seems to be turning a few up... There's no rush anyway as I'm just gonna enjoy the Cortina with it's 1600x-flow for the summer and go 2litre over the winter. ;D

Seeing as yours is a mk1 you can get away with using the standard zetec sump as it doesnt foul the crossmember. CVH sierra sumps do fit with a little bit of modding but they're like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo to get hold of. (probably for this reason) Mounts are easy to knock up and you can get around the water rail by redrilling the head to take a pinto thermostat housing provided youve got enough clearence at the bulkhead. You can get the zetec flywheel rerdrilled to take a pinto clutch and you need the release bearing from a capri as its slightly longer than the sierra one. Managment wise the cheapest option is probably megasquirt with MS+EDIS firmware. Any ford box will fit but the type 9 does seem to be the favorite to go with.

Can't remember exactly where I heard this, but it makes sense, but can't you squeeze the more modern Duratec engine pretty much anywhere a Zetec will go using the same gearbox options etc as the Zetec? That'd give you an engine that's more powerful as stock, and is still availible new, not sure if you could get them as 'crate engines' but I know Westfield and some others get them stock so it might be worth a try. Only thing is I bet that'd cost you.

If you can stretch. I'd recommend a Focus st170 engine. 170bhp out the box and reasonable economy.

you need. 1800 zetec waterpump (goes the right way round) new water rail (to bring the water outlet from the back to the front (http://www.raceline.co.uk/zetecframes.htm) engine mounts - retroford sump - modified sierra cvh one (retroford also sell them already done) plus the usual inlet system, exhaust system, clutch etc. richard chambers thread on turbosport is pretty good, and the zetec section on turbosport is pretty handy too www.turbosport.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=143

parts not as expensive as previously mentioned.
water rail is £160
engine mounts are £70 (escort ones)
sumps are £140
i worked it out to £1200, thats running bike carbs and a prebuilt megasquirt (not just the DIY kit)

What bike carbs are we talking? I have a pair of downdraught Dellorto DRLA 40 carbs sitting around doing nothing at the moment, could they be used, or do I need FI?

The duratec works out to a lot more money because the engines are still relativly new and you need to buy a modified bell housing which i think go for about 400 notes.

Retro ford do an adapter plate to fit an xr2 manifold and carb. All you need to do is sort out the the ignition managment. Either an aftermarket ecu or some late fiestas used a 2D ignition managment set up which i've been told is quite easy to wire in.

Retro ford do an adapter plate to fit an xr2 manifold and carb. Sorry, getting a bit confused... Adaptor to fit carbs on a Zetec? If so which carbs could be used?

yeah, thats the cheapest.
although, bike carbs - i paid £70 for my gixer 750 ones
manifold - i was going to plan building one, but then a mate managed to source me one for £60
and the prebuilt megasquirt is £275, i was planning building my own, but they have been done to death on the zetec, so i thought itd be easier and cheaper for me to buy a prebuilt one by someone who knows what they are doing (and its been tested on a zetec previous to me purchasing)
look on ebay, youll see the one I'm on about
