I can confirm that should you get clamped (my fault, untaxed car on the road, brought it home as its going to have MOT work done tomorrow and i knew we had neighbour issues) as long as you don't damage the clamp you can remove it. Plod turned up (reported by neighbour watching me from window) while i was in the midst of removing the steering arm because they wrap the chain round it and i explained that should the clamp happen to fall off while i was repairing the car was that my fault? They got on the radio, then came back and hung around to make sure i wasn't cutting or damaging the clamp but otherwise left me to it. I shall back tax the car to the beginning of the month on Monday after the MOT, but i think i'll still have to pay some sort of fine, I'm not paying the removal fee though.

you also cant be prosecuted for damaging the clamp if there are no witnesses and it is never found............

Interesting, would have been the DVLA approved clampers, operated by NCP of all people. I also had to pay a bond, as well as the fine when in a similar position. All in about £200? Which reminds me, I never did check if they paid the £120 bond back...

this happend to me too!! this WEEK!! was yours NSL? did you try calling them, bunch of flids.....
my post from TM
Got back to the car from shopping at lakeside,in their own carpark, which is free.
and there is a poxy clamp and massive sticker saying the car isnt taxed! curse word, as only this morning i had to get ripped off for £68.75 so i know for a fact i was legal,
called the number on the sticker and they said it wasnt taxed,we went on for a few minutes, and then she said even if it was taxed it would be a failure to display, Surely not in a Private car park??!
they want £250 to take it off, in cash, and i have to prove when and where it was taxed?
what a load off tits!
No way i was leaving it there over night, so got a lift back home and got some tools, and took it off. I called the company and asked them where they wanted the clamp delivered and after 5 mins off them being confused as to how it wasnt on the car they told me i would have to pay £1000 to them fortampering with DVLA property!! lol

This lot left me with a card for a 100 quid release fee, or 24hours later they would have collected the car and doubled it, but if you cant produce a valid tax disc its 160 or 280 pounds, theres no mention of fines on the card, i expect they reported me to DVLA so i'll hear in the post.
As i said it was my fault, i was banking on them being to slow to get round to me even if she did report me, car will be at the workshop tomorrow to have new battery tray fitted and a blob of weld on the chassis, then MOT and tax monday.
she must have checked it as soon as i parked it and reported me straight away, it was only there a couple of hours.

apparently if you deflate your tyre enough and jack it up, you can slip the chains off in some cases if its not wrapped around anything other than the wheel

I always thought it was illegal to fix your car on the side of the road?? nope, repairs are fine, its servicing and stuff your not supposed to do, otherwise how would the AA be able to come and help you? I'm not sure how you define broken down really, technically mine was immobilised and i fixed it unbolting a ball joint, letting the arm dangle until the obstruction slid off it and bolted it back together again. I'm not saying i was in the right, just that plod agreed it was ok to remove the clamp providing i didnt damage it, i even put something soft on the floor for it to fall over on so it wouldnt scratch.
