I know this is more car related, but it's not retro and it's really about doing the subframe more than the engine (which is quite extensive)!!
I bought the MGF for my girlfriend in 2007. The car had been recovered from a car park after the owner fled debts and left the car.
They're really nice cars, we've since replaced the interior to red/black leather seats, and while it's nice to drive, the HGF thing is just constantly looming, you spend half the time with your eye on the temp gauge.
The first time the car was used was to fill the Hydragas system as it failed it's MOT (it was sat on the bump stops), and half an hour into the journey, it overheated. The coolant was green and no mayonaise was in the oil. It ran fine for a long time, but when the water pump started leaking, that began a long and painful experience.
I spent the next year or so, changing heads, head gaskets, radiator, etc for new stuff, until early this year I realised I'd had enough with my engine and bought a new one.
It's warmed up enough recently to remove the engine subframe and replace the engine.
Git ahhhhttt:
I tried to remove the engine from the hole in the top, but it's fairly impossible. I spent a day removing a load of bolts, and found I couldn't have split the gearbox as there was no room. I then spent 15 minutes removing the eight bolts and wheeled the engine out on it's frame!
