I bought this car two months ago with a view to using it as my daily driver, however with fuel prices rising (I ought to have seen that coming) and a long commute it's got to the stage where I'm spending a sizeable chunk of my monthly wages on fuel alone. The car is typically averaging 25-26mpg.
Since I bought the car I have replaced the alternator due to it not holding charge. I have also replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat and thermostat housing as the cooling system is a known weak spot on high mileage M50 engines and I didn't want to risk doing any damage to the head gasket. There are no known mechanical faults on the vehicle at present other than the replacement radiator had no means of fitting the coolant level sensor so the OBC advises you that coolant is low every time you start the car; I have kept a close eye on the coolant and it is not losing any. A compression test also revealed that there are no head gasket issues.
The interior is pretty much mint aside from two cigarette burns on the passenger door card from a previous owner. It is fitted with the usual stuff you'd expect from a 3 series of this vintage; electric windows, electric sunroof, OBC, power steering, electric door mirrors etc. and one of the previous owners has replaced the head unit and fitted a CD changer at some point in the car's life. When using the remote to unlock the car the driver's door does not unlock, causing the rest of the doors to lock again, using the key does not yield the same issue so that is what I have been doing.
The bodywork is solid but not immaculate. The owner before me attempted to repair some minor bits of rust around the door edges and has not done a particularly good job of the spraying, but the rest of the car came up nice when I clay barred, polished and waxed it a few weeks ago; the only bit of rust left on the car that I find in any way offensive is at the bottom of the offside front wing, this is not structural but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bug me a bit, this can be seen in one of the photos I have uploaded. The 15" alloy wheels fitted are in good condition and the tyres still have plenty of tread left. Whilst on the hunt for this I found it a struggle to find one that hadn't been messed about with, so if you're not into that boy racery stuff or you want a blank canvas to upgrade as you see fit then this is a solid basis.
I was looking forward to owning and keeping this car for the forseeable future but as previously mentioned - with fuel prices that only seem to be on the up, a long commute, a stingey wage packet and other commitments - it's not a viable car for my needs.
I would urge that anyone considering viewing/buying this car is not put off by the mileage as it drives very well and I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I have owned and driven several E36s in the past and this is by far the best example I've experienced.
With regards to p/ex I'd be looking for something a little cheaper and more economical than this, preferably with cash my way and must have some Tax/MOT.
Please contact me on 07722 666 725 for the most likely response, although I do work standard office hours so will not be available to answer all day every day. If I don't answer please do not hesitate to leave an answer phone message and I will call you back as soon as I am able. I check my PMs on a daily basis but it's not my preferred method of communication so I'd rather you called and if you require any more photos I can send them to you after a conversation.
Thanks for looking.
