I believe they have diff locks on both axles, so can be genuinely 4 wheel drive if required, unlike defenders etc, which only lock the centre diff with the axles on "open" diffs, so may well only have drive to one wheel per axle.
Expensive to buy a good one, there are a few cheap ones to be found, but they are cheap for a reason - Rust of epic proportions. I don't know if there is a reason some are affected (non galvanised? different build quality? - no idea TBH) The bodyshop round from my sisters house had one in a while back. The chap was rebuilding the entire lower 8 inches of it. Underneath looked like a Discovery that had been parked in the sea for a year or two.

ZOMG! Portal axles!! As well as many other toys, this particular custom version seems to have on-board air inflation too! I'm assuming there are strong links with the G-Wagen and its bigger brother the Unimog? As Dave has said, F&R diff locks pretty common (don't think they were standard on all models) which gives epic off-road ability. I'm really not keen on the shiny black Brabus style Chelsea Tractors, but the more 'arable' and mud-plugging biased versions certainly float my boat.

I've always wanted one since being a nipper. We had a pristine one traded in where I used to work but the sales monkeys got their hands on it and ebay'd it. Made about 4 times what they gave for it as a trade in.

I have fond memories of a white 230 G my Dad owned when I was a kid. It was a soft top and when used off road or in the deepest of winter it pretty much defined the concept of go-anywhere-ability. I loved it when my Dad picked me up from kindergarten with the roof down in the summer!
The first generation of engines (carb-fed M115 petrol and the W123-derived diesels) aren't rocketships, but these cars are the purest form of G you can get, engaging the diff locks with solid metal levers and stuff. ;D 280s were thirsty, but surprisingly quick!
The second generation engines are far more economical. The W124 derived fuel injected petrols 230GE and 300 GE feel civilized without losing too much of their off road capabilities. The newer-gen diesels 250 GD and 300GD are my personal favourites with super-relieable engines that outshine their predecessors in terms of fuel economy and performance while you can still do much of the work yourself.
Parts are expensive and there are a few jobs that are more complicated than on regular road cars. Apparently you need to drop the fuel tank to gain access to change the exhaust.
Oh and my Dad had to part with it because of rust issues as far as I can recall. But he promised himself to own a G wagon again sometime. It only took him 15 years, he bought a brand new G270 CDI back in 2007. Again a SWB in white, only no convertible this time. And again he loves it to bits so there must be something about them!

ZOMG! What's a Portal Axle? ooooh I get to learn something new ;D I'm afraid I'm a a bit sozzled, so rahter than trying to explain it, I'll point you here instead: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_axleIt prboably explains it better than I could (well, far better than I could rihgt now)...G-Wagen's didn't come with them so I can only assume that parts from the Uinmog are compatible. Both bieng Mercedes i tseems the logical choice. A qucik pic stolen from Wikipedia seeing as we all like pics.

Awesome off road, unstoppable, will do things and go places other 4x4s can only dream of. Sold my white swb for about £1k which was way too cheap but not much interest in it. Went laning a few times and never got stuck, hydraulic diff locks front and rear and excellent low range, very strong, comfortable, civilised, warm, watertight and many other things a Defender is not! Lots of parts are quite reasonable and nearly all of it will last 10 times longer than anything else. Heck, it was designed for the German army, even has long term storage and recommisioning instructions in the handbook !(although no destruction guidelines like in Landy Air Portables)

Those portal axles look like aftermarket ones to me, rather than Unimog. Portal axle hubs are expensive to make, but not completely beyond aftermarket suppliers. Mark's 4wd Adaptors here in Australia has developed their own portal axle conversion for the Nissan Patrol and they're working on the Landcruiser. Their website is a bit out of date though... They give a 100mm increase in track and 101mm lift with no change in rims or tyres. With a set of 35" tyres fitted the portal axles give the same clearance as a regular axle on 43" tyres. www.marks4wd.com/products/gearmaster/Gearmaster-portal-Nissan-GQ-GU.htm
