The cars involved in the live action movie are the same as the ones in the manga yet the characters in the live action have different personalities than in the comic/manga and interact differently as well as that.
If you haven't seen the books or anime then it might be an alright watch, but when/if you see them they won't make sense as it doesnt match up.
If I hadn't of seen the others first I would have perhaps enjoyed it instead of constantly going "what?!, that's not what happened!"
Also, those of you with Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 may have seen the Shuichi Shigeno version of the AE86 on there, abbreviated to S.S. Shuichi Shigeno is the creator of Initial D, hence the car. Shame it doesn't have the Fujiwara Tofu Shop (Private Vehicle) on the side though.

It's one of those things where if you care about something and it gets adapted into a feature film you'll almost certainly not be impressed. Compremises have to be made when something goes mass market (ish in this case) and the purists/original fans usually end up dissatisfied. I don't think this takes anything away from the anime version, it needs to be judged on its own as the aim is different. As a jolly good romp with retro cars, great scenary, great cinematography and general coolness it is up there with the original Taxi. IMHO

but c'maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, the Night Kids dude is drifting a GT-R, yes, they do drift but not like that and the whole point of it was that he thought he could be faster GRIP driving than anyone could be drifting so they removed that whole aspect from it. Also, the rest of his team have Skylines.. odd because he changed from an S13 to a GT-R when he got beaten by one and the rest of his team still had their S13's etc as well as the other team-mate who had the EG6 Civic.
Also Itsuki crashes Iketani's S13 but it was Iketani who crashed it.... so many things that could have been maintained were just destroyed for no reason, I don't think it was a case of compromise, more a case of "artistic licence"

Never realised there were so many secret Manga lovers out there ;D Sadly i've always been dubious about live action remakes of Mangas and Animes, they just never capture the scenece of the original piece. Makes me really worried about official rumours flying around about the live action Neion Genesis Evangelion (even if Peter Jackson has been officialy named as a possible director) Gotta love a bit of futuristic mecha lovin' Anyway! Suitably random

Extremely interesting stuff. I don't think it will upset me too much as i never saw it, i even enjoyed Transporter 2, mind i left my common sense at home! I'll have to see it, not seen the Dukes yet cos the GF never saw the original and i want her to see that first. Starskers and Crotch was different (but ok) and i worry what will happen to Firebird prices when Knight Rider comes out, BTW they already ruined the story with KR 4000 but we'll see... More Manga, J car, and ID facts please...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I thought Dukes was really good and I usually hate cult movie cash-ins.

The best thing ever about Initial D was always the AE85 Levin and Itsuki, I understand Itsuki is in (the loud annoying guy) but where's the AE85 gone! He bought it thinking it was an AE86, AE85 being rare due to it being so awful. Compared to AE86 it has a horrible 1.5L SOHC engine and super dodgy suspension and it becomes the joke car of the show for how pitifully slow it is, and him the joke character for being pretty awful at driving and useless with girls. I think the show would be ten times better if he was the main character, to be honest. Seeing him do wonky slides all over, Stunner tyres melting away, races with Micras and Hijet vans.

PMSL @ Stunner tyres. Still prefer the old "Dark Horse Radials" though I went to see it on the big screen and thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my other half Don't let the fact it could be better stop you going to see it, it's cool.

When I watched it on VCD the Chinese and the Japanese voice tracks were both on there - that was chuffin' confusing! ;D

Did you realise Mr Autohausdolby that if you switch to mono you only hear one voice track. Also the HK VCD has no J, only Cantonese and Mandarin.
I watched ID tonight then played poker at my mate's house. He got a bit drunk so I drove him home in his Porsche 944 then drove myself home with my neighbour. We tried a bit of drifting round Peckham in the wet. Let me tell you, the 944 doesn't handle like it oughta and we did a bit too much sideways action - the out of control variety.
The driving in Initial D is impressive. I hanker after skill like that and a place like that to practice. Kingston upon Thames one way system looks best to me but that Datsun's not up to the job and my wife's 1.3L Daihatsu doesn't cut the mustard.
