...Probably! My dad was asking if i know anyone who might want to buy this 240 wagon. Then i looked at the luggage (read tat) potential, and the 6th and 7th seats in the boot, ideal for filming out of, unless you areover 5 foot that is! So for this reason i'll have to consider it! The GF has already insisted i'm not having it, and volvo's feel a bit wierd to drive to me and aren't all cars at first? Kinda big and not as rewarding to drive as the Sierra. So much tat luggin potential. its even got a tow bar. Gut instinct is i don't want to change from my trusty steed to this big luggin wagon. The low down: Its a 240 GL usual Volvo refinements 2.3 engine (the best one i'm told, GLT spec) says it should do 20 MPG? what will it do? 7 seats and tow bar Automatic with overdrive, which took a bit of getting used to. Power steering and an amazing turning circle. V smart and full ticket Thought i'd see what you guy think before it goes in FS section What do you's think?

Looks a tidy example! From my experience you don't really drive these things... It feels more like I'm steering a ship. And I suppose that can make it a less involved experience. Very relaxed drive though, and pretty much unbreakable. Check out Wagoneers 240 for modding inspiration!

altho i like volvos, not that one! stick with the sierra, you arent old yet! Exactly, i'm rediscovering my youth and warning off age a bit and i'm not sure this would help! Benzboy you hit the nail on the head there, it is like steering a ship! which might be nice chugging down motorway to a job or to get some bits. I only had 5 mins in it on tight roads so didn't get chance to go mad in it but i don't think i'm feeling it. Also got some nice mods planned for the sierra and i think 20mpg might ruin me. ;D

I'd say go for it!
They have all the usual merits you'd expect, and those engines are really really tough. If this is a 1989 GL model, then its likely it will have the 2.0 engine (I think) the lower pov spec DL has the 2.3, yet the GLT has the 2.3. I think 20-25mpg is easily achievable.
I had one when I was 26 and loved it. It was the same age as this one, but felt as new. And they're still as intimidating when current, that whoosh of the engine often scares small children and horses. You must own one even if its for a few months!

I've had mine two years now having bought it originally to cart heavy loads over distances reliably. It coped with that very well. I even towed a very heavy trailer with a ton of sand in it up daft hills, it's only the 2ltr as well. On good runs I get good mpg as well and it does fine on motorways although I'd rather have the 2.3 on long hills to save having to come out of over drive (pressing the button is soooo exhaustive....). Oi - surprisingskoda - I'm not old either, just thinking differently

Now the argument is levelled out i got summat to think about. Having a big massive estate would rule so much, be totally liberating. I have got used to the sierra handling more like a smaller car, or at least it will when i sort the springs/shocks/wheels/tyres! Damn will have to give this some more thought... Planning on a modern custom van eventually

Looks like a tidy 240... it'll have the B230F engine, assuming the grille is standard - as it has the lambda logo. So in theory, you should get decent (for a Volvo) MPG as it's a more efficient injection system than the earlier cars.
If you want a 240 that handles, everything is available - Bilstein shocks, IPD anti-roll bars and you have a bus-sized go cart...

Damn i'm reading carsurvey.org any they are all singing its praises too. Aaaagh, it will hopefully have one of my faster nimbler cars for day to day so i really can't write this gem off, PPL just love em. I want soft but not wobbly suspension for filming hence the gas request, handling would be nice too. Its funny, it seems this big old wagon should be more economocal than the 360 i used to have, i think its that whats putting me off.

I really like 'em now. Quite an anti-car-fashion statement. They can be made to handle better (well, handle at all really) like SteveP said. If you're feeling adventurous they can also be made to go faster - either by dropping in a turbo engine, or by turbocharging your existing engine. There's a great article on Turbobricks about strapping a turbo onto a B23 www.turbobricks.com/mods.php?content=art0024Not really an afternoon's work, and perhaps not the ideal project for a daily driver, but it's interesting to know that it can be done relatively easily

i love em mate, go for it! its like my benz, the practicality of them is just unbeatable - and that would be even more practical than my benz! And if its helps with filming then in some ways you could say it almost pays for itself. imo - you cant say no!

I have thought of your Benz Keefy, i could hook up trailers whenever, and hang out the back with a camera crew. More amazingly, you can sleep in em which would be useful at CARS! Checked out ebay too theres loads, not to thrilled about the fact its an auto or that there will be a drop in economy/power, but am still mulling it over as we speak. keep those comments coming...

yes they are practical, my old man used to have one..for about 10 years. they sound like a turbine pulling away...very odd noise.
however, there are more economical ways of lugging tat than a 20-mpg volvo. that said it will be good for 200k miles plus.

Spax are good, but Bilstein's are still the daddy when it comes to handling on these cars. A friend of mine has a 940 on bilstein suspension and IPD anti roll bars - it's hard to describe how that thing handles, like nothing I've ever been in before. You simply wouldn't believe how well a big bus can be made to handle. Unfortunately a turbo conversion on a RHD 240 is not an easy task due to the location of the brake master cylinder (close to turbo!). Ofcourse if you want boostly goodness, fit a 2.3 turbo to a 360... better economy than a standard GLT and 180bhp

MY folks had a 245DL for nearly 20 years ! My mum tried, my dad tried, and i tried very hard to break it, and it just wouldn't. Did nearly 300'000 miles before they traded it in for a diesel golf... Great cars, good power, great fun. and make a surprising noise, and the " clunk " of it going into overdrive at 90 is something i won't forget !

I was sceptical about a big Volvo, until we bought a 760 (I know it's not totally the same) when we had our twins.
We are now converted to Volvos being on our third 7 series, the latest being an auto estate.
I thought I wouldn't like the auto, but for just wafting along, they are quite a novelty, and the Mrs wants her next car to be an auto too.
EDIT: the 760 was the 2.3 turbo and was stupidly fast for a big barge.
