I'm looking at getting a set of motorbike carbs for the mitsubishi, has anybody got any experiance of using them on a car? I've been told that I'll need 42mm carbs but as I'm not a bike man I have no idea which bikes I need to be looking at and which carbs are suitable for transfering. Any thoughts, tips, ebay links or suggetions will be appreciated, thank you

what engine?
they roughly convert to carb sizes. i.e if you are running dcoe 40's then 42's are about right.
but remember to find out the size they taper down to, a 42mm one will usually taper down to about 36ish, this should be roughly the size of choke that you would consider running on a normal carb. i.e a 140bhp 2.0 would be runnign roughly 36mm chokes on dcoe 45's.
although i could be wrong ;D

Nice one, I'll consult the standard carbs specs and see what I can cross referance. It's a 2.0 eight valve mitsubishi engine from my 1979 Sapporo.. Anyone got any engine pics of cars running bike carbs? MrW?

1200 Bandits are only 36mm. You'll be wanting them off a watercooled (WP-WS designation) Suzuki GSXR1100, IIRC, they are 40mm... Fortunately, the watercooled model GSXR11 carbs aren't as popular as some others, so shouldn't be too dear!
Cheers, Martin

My 1991 oil cooled Gixer 1100 engine has 40mm mikunis on it. These are the most common carbs used on car engine conversions.

I'm also thinking about this conversion, i rang Bogg Bros and they said its about £180 for manifold and that they would clean and jet the carbs for another £40. It doesnt sound to bad. Give em a call very helpful blokes.

Excellant work guys, I'm just off out to see the guy who's sorting out my head, he said they could make a manifold for me so I'll ask about costs etc while I'm up there. Boggbros sound like the people to get them jetted so it just involes my finding a suitable set now. Anybody have any for sale?

There was an article in PPC mag about bike carbs a couple of months ago. Just dug it out, if this helps: 'Up until 1997 Suzuki's big GSXR1100 used 40mm Mikuni BST40SSs which make a good choice. Kawasaki also offer the 40mm Keihin CVKD40s from their ZX9R, but Bogg Brothers, who have come to specialise in fitting bike carbs to car engines favour the 40mm Mikuni BDSR40s from the Yamaha R1 for their reliability, smooth fuelling and provision of a throttle position sensor as standard - ideal for linking up to a mappable ignition ECU. For bigger engines, you should perhaps consider the 42mm Keihins used on the Honda Blackbird...
...Since he's been in the game, Steven Bogg has yet to come across a set of carbs that was knackered. What's more likely is accident damage to the outer casings, so check before you buy. Make sure all the needles are present and try to get the full set of rubber joiners that mate the carb to the bike's head - they're very expensive new and very useful.'Goes on to say that Bogg Brothers will do a TIG welded manifold for £180, or carbs, mounts etc as a bolt on kit for £295.

Anyone know how these respond to normal mechanical fuel pumps? I ran a pair of Weber IDFs from a Bug fuel pump without a reg with no problems - is it going to give me trouble doing the same with these?

Well I've just got back from Coltec who are working on my cylinder head and they gave me a ball park figure of around £280.00 for an Alloy manifold or they'll make a budget one in steel if I require. I may just wait though as the Guy also said that he was impressed with the quality of the Mitsubishi head "It's a lot better than the curse word ford were making 20 years ago" ;D ;D and then suggested that a T3 turbo would get it flowing nicely.

Oh, and does anyone know:
1. Which issue of PPC the article was in and what car is on the cover
2. Whether the things have any sort of choke arrangement

It was issue 23, with the Z28 on the front. Not sure about chokes. Recommended to use an electric fuel pump and a pressure regulator to smooth the pulses out, as bike carbs have small float chambers and can run out quite rapidly.
