Right, so i've been thinking about how I want my mini to end up. I want to try and do something different with it, because with such big community alot of the restored mini's I see are looking fantastic, but abit 'samey' if you get me. I'm pretty sure about the wheels - Standard 10'' steels, but banded, and as for arches, the narrow group 2's. But for colours etc, I have no idea, some with wether to go for a coloured roof etc. Here are some pics of some mini's I particularly like, as they're not really the conventional restoration. So really I'm after any ideas regarding colour, wheels, what type of grille and really anything I could do to it to make it stand out a bit more. Cheers

White one is the nicest one out of the lot, but it's all been done millions of time before! What else can you do with these, there's not a lot of possibilities. The white one would've looked nice as a van, with olde schoole livery on the side.

Well, the mainstay of every good mini is wheels, arches and lowering. The trouble is, most wheel and arch combos have already been done. Ever thought about making your own arches?

thanks for putting mine (2nd one down) as one you like! I think the way to go with minis is simple - less is more. Fit some hi-lo's and nice 10s with a few details and you're onto a winner

That looks hard! Luke is right, it shouldn't matter what other people think, as long as you like it.

Early, '60s style bodywork, chrome rims of some sort, white band tyres, full on flake/panel Watson style paint job.
Sorted.

If you wanted to make your's stand out from the crowd, restore it to 100% stock. I can't remeber the last time I saw a stock early mk3 850 In all seriousness, you are unlikely to be able to do something 100% unique (as you have already found out), but one of the best ways is to look at other scenes and see what you like from them and then try to work out how to adapt it to a mini. banded steels are a good choice, arch wise, what about looking at the J arches (sold in the parts section here) and see if you could get those to work and perhaps even look at the range of MoD Satin paints and pic a colour from there (PRU Blue would work well I think ). I am a big believer in cheap paint jobs on minis, had more fun with the rattle cans on my 85 city and being able to change the look of it for £30 than the proper resprays on my Cooper (or my old clubby, too scared of damaging the paint to have fun in it)

blacking out the chrome find a different paint seperation instead of just the roof a different colour rake? look at brands for colour schemes to pinch, even without actually using the logo, just the colours I want to do a marmite car copy the design of an object you like, or that the shape of the car resembles like: do a patern motif glow in the dark paint? california look

So, definately banded steels. As for arches, i think the j - ones on here would be too big wouldnt they? Could anyone tell me which arches are on the white one?
i quite like the idea of flake paint, maybe on the rims? But i don't want to just make one like the white one but in a different colour :/
I had an idea for the grille - i think the bit i don't like on most mini's is the fact the grille adds so much to the front, so i was thinking of just having the mk1 grille surround trim with black mesh as the actual grille? I think this balance of chrome and black would look good, especially if i had black steels with chrome centrecaps, and black arches with chrome trim.

Grill idea sounds good. You could do a pinstripe and carry it across the grill.

The arches on the white one are delux Grp2's The Grill idea woudl work well, the very early works S's ran something similar. Splitting the paint at the waistine works well (the red was flaked as well)

Another idea is to use the Mk3 grille surround (painted yellow RAL1004,yes), black mesh inside, dark racing green body (RAL6005), white roof (RAL9001), Grp5 arches and 6x10 banded steelies (painted again in yellow) with a yellow strip over the width of the bonnet and front fenders. Something like this: Sportspack also looks great in combination with 10" steelies.
