Nice Job Dave
I remember the first time I did a repair like that I rushed the welding too much and ended up with a huge bow in the door skin, that took forever to get anywhere near flat.

Nice Job Dave I remember the first time I did a repair like that I rushed the welding too much and ended up with a huge bow in the door skin, that took forever to get anywhere near flat. Cheers Tony, you´re not the only one mate, i learnt the hard way too next job is the other half there is nothing wrong with your wife ;D ;D ;D As i got a full day in yesterday i got the rest of the door done. First job was to get the shape of the bottom of the B post.. and then transfer this over to the repairplate you´d think that was enough to get it right but it wasn´t so i had to do it again so i carefully straightenend it back out again and redid the curve and with the ruler back in to get the bottom gap right... the panel is ready for welding But before i get the welder going i need to make up the closing panel for the bottom of the door, at the moment the doorskin has no hold at the bottom. I knocked up a couple of strips and braced the door so that the doorskin can´t move and tacked in the strips to get it all in position. With the door looking not too bad from the outside... .... i can know take it out again, weld up the inside properly and fabricate the inner lower corners to finish of this little bit of the restoration cheers, Dave

Amazing!
The door bottoms off my CX are made out of filler and aluminium (!?) repair plate so I think some day I'll have to take the plunge as well. For now I'd be happy if I had the body welded up, the inspection man shouldn't care about the doors.

Nice work again Dave, I see you use magnets on your panels to hold them in place, another type thats handy are the magnetic strips from inside the door seals of old refrigerators and freezers, just slit the seals open and pull out the mag strips, could have been useful for you in mocking up the gentle curves on the repair piece as theres no need to tape them on.

Cheers mate, wouldn´t it be easier just to get hold of some second hand doors - i know o would if i could ;D Nice work again Dave, I see you use magnets on your panels to hold them in place, another type thats handy are the magnetic strips from inside the door seals of old refrigerators and freezers, just slit the seals open and pull out the mag strips, could have been useful for you in mocking up the gentle curves on the repair piece as theres no need to tape them on. I´ll keep that in mind next time i come across a scrap fridge With the doorskin in place and the inside bottom bit tacked in place i took out the door and laid it on the bench so that i could weld it properly.. I took my time and welded it an inch at a time - not the prettiest of welds but once cleaned up it´ll be ok. the front corner was relatively easy to close up.. but the other end is a bit more complicated. First job was to chop out the bottom corner out of a Merc W123 door that i had going spare... Cleaned it up a bit and whacked it a couple of times with the big hammer ;D and it fits quite well ;D and the before pic ;D Now i can clean it all up a bit and run some paint into the bottom joint to help keep the rust at bay.... ...unfortunately the door´s not finished yet, there´s a bit needing sorting at the top where the windowframe joins the top edge.

Awesome work as always Dave. So will you lead the join as well or just a skim of filler?

I like that you're using donated body parts from other cars - excellent. I wish I'd have kept some old doors and stuff for this purpose!
Possibly daft question: What are the brass-coloured rivets in the panels for?

Clecoe (spl) basically re-usable rivets - great little tools I've got the complete back end of a mini held together with them awaiting the weldathon!! (Complete back end = boot floor, wheel arches, rear valance and back end)

(Complete back end = boot floor, wheel arches, rear valance and back end) I never knew these existed! Just watched a demo video on Youtube along with the Cleco clamps. What a great tool to have! I've lost count of the times I've welded the mole grips to the work, or burnt my fingers while holding bits together.

They´re brillaint little tools Dean and well worth the money. Time for a small update I thought i´d take the doorhinges off and give them a once over... they´d been painted over at least 3 times and were still rusted solid. After a bit of gentle pursuasion (read WD40 and a big hammer ;D) i finally got them apart. After straightening them back up the got a coat of primer - here the before and after pic hard to believe it took all day i´ve been filling and sanding the door the last couple of days.. and have given it a coat of primer the wing needed another coat too so whilst i was at it i gave it a onceover too... next job up is this little problem...

Havent looked in readers rides for a while (work) but came in looking for this today as I finished early, you havent been hanging about, that door is excelent! Looking at the picture runing down the side of the car with the door and wing in place its already hard to remember just how far gone the car was. Brilliant stuff We could do with you down at our workshop ;D

Brilliant stuff We could do with you down at our workshop ;D cheers mate, it´s an excellent mojo booster now that i´ve actually got a bit done that looks good Oh and thanks for the offer but i love doing this stuff for fun but there´s no way i fancy doing it professionally. The last bit of welding on the door is this little lot.. there´s no way you can get at it properly without chopping off part of the door so i got the anglegrinder warmed up again Basically there is a strengthening plate along the whole length of the window gap at the top of the door and where this has been spot welded to the outer skin it has gathered moisture over the years and has started to rust inbetween the two plates. Using some zinkplated leftovers i knocked up a replacement.. spot welded it into place.. and then welded back in the bit that i´d chopped out I´ve filled the joint with primer and left it wrong way up overnight so that the joint is sealed up from the inside. Now all i need to do is get it looking decent again ;D

It looks like a new door now It will do hopefully once i´ve sanded back this lot Cheers Rian, at the moment i´m trying to concentrate on what´s been done and not what´s left Before I finish off the door (to be honest I can´t be arsched sanding any more) so I got the welder out as I need to fabricate a plate to close this gap. I´ve done one for the front but somehow forget this one, so I was forced into eating some Cornflakes ..and as I don´t have a bead roller (yet) I chopped up some old Taunus Transit air ducting that has some beads in it... There´s no way I could get the plate done in one go so I broke it down into two sections that ill weld together´... and the top bit... by the time it´s painted it´ll look alright. Now i´m not too sure what the cars had originally but looking at the before pics it wasn´t very effective No more welding today, time to catch up with the snooker methinks ;D
