Yo yoeddy. Regarding the HiF carb mate. Had to rebuild one today, so thought I would check on the oil for the dashpot. Manual says "engine oil". In my case thats 20/50 GTX. Feels like treacle when its in there - but the manual is the manual. If you get any weird symptoms with yer 3-in-1 you might try it. Otherwise fine... PS The cave is being propped up while most buildings in Lyttelton are being knocked down. Its only logical. The Council prop something up while they decide whether to knock it down... Hmmm

There used to be proper dash-pot oil...
But I always used 3 in 1 because it was thinner and cheaper!
So whens the Viva getting its rego?

glad the batcave is still a cave and not a quarry. Can we come visit in about 2 weeks time when next down? I might try 20/50 if i have troubles. Not sure but when i try to rev engine hard it flat spots and piston which can be viewed only goes up maybe one third. Is that because the engine needs to be under load for su carb to work? Ie not enough suck to raise the dashpot? Mdh- rego once wof done. Wof once cert done. Cert once wheels done. Wheels once cooling etc sorted.

Still a way to go then You may have too much oil in the damper... With the engine off, lift the piston all the way with a finger then let it drop back down. I did this once and got a face full of 3 in 1!!

There's two very militant schools on what oil to use in dashpots. Some say 3 in 1 or ATF is fine. The other say using anything you must use 20/50, if you don't you'll explode and die a horrible agonising death. Generally, as long as there's something in there, you should be fine.
Anyway, been following this one for a while. Mmm, rotary. Can't wait for the available funds to have one myself. Nicely done.

LOL I remember old duffers telling me I'd wreck my carbs using 3in1, and that I should use sewing machine oil as it wasnt abrasive!
I tried 20/50 but found it so heavy that the pistons barely moved.

On my tuned metro's engine, 3 in 1 makes it hesitate when pulling away and revving, so i use 90w gear oil, sooooooo much better, gives the engine a nice smooth response.

I've used 3 in 1 in the GT6 when I've been stuck but you can get proper oil for it, I'll get the make next time I'm home

oh yeah- i believe! I had done a little bit of googling on the subject of which oil and boy it was a was zone out there! So i did a very complicated weight test. I poured a tiny bit of oil into small trays- 3 in 1, atf, 15 weight fork oil, 20/50, 10/40. Then played around tipping the trays back, forwards, standing back, hand on chin, tut tutting and general hmmming. I didn't have a clip board or white coat which may have been my downfall. I went with 3 in 1. For now..

Yep! I finally got my widened steel wheels sorted. I finished painting them the other day.. ..and then got the tyres swapped across by a local tyre shop friend who has a lovely series 2 rx7 and admired my car I put the wheels on today and I reckon they look great. They just set the car off perfect. I'm very happy! To most people I think they'll almost look standard. When I had the front wheels off I adjusted the camber as it was set with loads of negative. The top ball joint can be moved in or out via two sets of holes. But I think now I could do it with a little negative camber back in as the wheels are close to the arches. I will slot out between the two sets of holes and make it so I can fine tune it. I will also roll the arches and do the mod to the front of the arch as per Vauxhall sports part manual as the now wider wheels just touch the front bottom corner when turning. The carb started to flood again the other night. I checked the float bowl and there was some small bits of metal in there- they must have come from the little fitting I had made to hold the gauge. I cleaned it out and put carb back in place. All good now. Must order a filter. The little Jaycar 'electronic LCD temp gauge + adjustable switch' kit arrived from a guy on Oldschool. I will look to building that tomorrow night. Hopefully my soldering skills will be up to it! I can just see me building it then all the tellys in the neighbour hood change channel or something when I connect it.

Yes please! Really looking the part now, wheels are gorgeous! There were some proper adjustable top arms on ebay UK the other week, went for £200. I was tempted though! Just needs a little lowering now

have you got a link to the adjustable arms that sold ollie? I'm just curious as to what they looked like? Yeah the front needs to be a touch lower but otherwise it'll be about where its at. Too low is a pain for actual driving and i want the car looking period not gansta like all these other young whipper snappers cars there days..:-)
