Cheers guys. Saab might be the go for the wagon.
As for the trump it has to be a six- hannah has put her foot down. We had a e34 525tds when in the UK. Was a lovely engine. 170bhp and 50mpg on long runs. :-)
But nz never got the tds:-(

A mate in Upper Takaka had a Viva wagon like that with a Holden 186 shoe horned in it. It wasn't pretty.

The Viva needs to be bright orange with a confederate flag on the roof to go with those wheels!

What about a 5 for the wagon?
My daily is an alfa 156 2.4 jtd sportwagon, big 5cyl 10v diesel lump. Got a £50 tuning box and the thing flys, 180ish bhp and 75+ mpg when cruising at 60-65mph... sounds pretty good too for a diesel

Sadly I bet those alfa diesel 5 are very hard to find or expensive here in nz. Most European engines still pricey. Anyone fancy popping over with one for me? I'll put the kettle on.. Meanwhile back to viva one. I cleared out the shed and swept up all the dust that I don't want in my engine. Then I extracted to two headsi want to use from the pile of 6. Hannah wants to rebuild this engine and learn in the process so she will start by re-lapping in the valve seats(barely worth doing as only 100km since done..more of a clean) and replacing all the valve seals.

Get her doing some porting whale there, clean up the ridge in the head where the valve seat joins Cheers guys. Saab might be the go for the wagon. Will be expensive though There are a few small capacity J 6's that are not popular with the tuners, like 2 and 2.5 Nissans and Toyota's, often in non turbo, that should be a decent price

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

same as the vauxhall omega, and ssan yong musso (sorry if spelt wrong) I guess you didn't get any holdens with the 2.5 diesel? I wish my mrs had even a small interest in cars, apart from driving them, and wanting a new one.

If the Triumph is going to a be cruiser, how about a Falcon straight 6? One from a 2002 model will get you 180kw (240hp) and 380nm or a 1998 model will get you 160kw and 360nm...
There used to be a few places that did itb kits and other tuning bits for the NA straight 6. (Until the turbo came out anyway)

Something to consider...
The Mazda K-series V6 started off as a sister to Suzuki H series engines (H20A, H25A, H27A). Soon after development started, the 2 engines went on seperate paths, so while the blocks look nearly identical, they internals are different.
With Vitara/Grand Vitara having a H-series up until late 2008, you should be able to find a low km engine that would slot in without much effort. Also the Grand Vitara's are N-S mounted, so well suited to RWD. (or even a 4WD Viva if you get the whole drivetrain swapped)
The later 3.2L in the Grand Vitara's was actually a Chevy V6.

I do like the vitara engines. Dad has a grand vital a with the 2.7. Very smooth. Chain driven cams ? I think possibly iron blocks too and if so a fair bit heavier than the kettle series.
This wagon will need to have something a bit thriftier running than a v6 though. Intention if I keep it long time is as a cheap to run shopper car. So mainly looking at 4 cylinder engines.

If you want thrifty, surely it's gotta be diesel.
An old 4pot Bimmer lump maybe?
You could save $$ by making your own diesel from waste oil...

Not in NZ there's a fairly heavy road user charge on diesel vehicles, meaning its no cheaper than running a petrol, LPG is slightly cheaper than petrol but only a bit. Not sure what the legal status of home brew fuel is in NZ

Unless you wind the odometer back..... but yeah - we have stupid regs on diesel here which make running older diesel cars not much cheaper. Hence tdi vag cars etc are no where near as popular in in Europe.
Do tdi vag engines came in red north south arrangement? Audis? Easy to fit red boxes or are they cheap adaptors about? I guess I could make another similar to what's between the v6 and rx7 box.
Ohhhh- this above engine conversation can now move to the hb wagon thread I've started - now the wagon is safely mine :-)

Wow. Been ages since I've done anything to this car. Maybe a record for me? I did clean the windows the other day..still dusty all over from oldschool nats grasskhana way back in March. I must put some photos I took up on RR of the nats..our own 'gathering'. I will do i promise. Drove the viva over to Blenheim last Friday night so we could check out the new hb wagon. Still so fun on hills. Still comfy as in them seats. Loved it. Hannah drove back and pushed me into finally getting sorted for engine swap back to the 2.5. She wants to build it herself and learn so tonight we started on replacing the valve stem seals. Much easier now I have the home made tool for removing the old ones and the other tool for placing the collects easily. Discovered/noticed the heads have 3 angle valve seat grinds. Not sure if factory? looks like the ports have been cleaned up too. Not going to get carried away with it. Just assemble it. 200+bhp will be plenty for now and if we want more in the future once that wagon becomes the daily then I'd like to charge it. Axle would cry anyway. So cold outside and warm in the truck. Cleared the bench and got started on swapping them seals. Cosy..better than cold shed. 3 angles? Might be worth half a medium sized pony. Efforts could have been put into cleaning back the guides. But not for me. Will leave as is. Oh and found a photo of gauges at dusk that I think looks cool.

Them don't look like 3 angles mate... Glad to see the 2.5 is gonna be going back together. 200 ponies in a little Viva should be rather amusing!

Yeah it has got them three angles. But hard to show in photo. It's a bonus I guess but in the grand scheme won't add much compared to one day bolting a turbo(s) in place :-)
