I really love the shape of the HB Viva. Yours looks to be a superb example. The wider Victor steels were a good choice, it'd be great if you could have them banded slightly, maybe to 6" so as to keep the standard looks. Are you allowed to run banded steels in NZ? Those Alfa seats are fantastic too, as you say the fluted panels look right at home in the Viva. The rebuilt suspension and modified gearbox is all very nicely carried out, some lovely work there. Excellent work and keep the pics coming. We need to see a few shots post lowering, I reckon it must look much better. Cheers, Richard.

cheers. Banded steels are allowed but they must be built by a certified place i think. Those victor rims are only 4.5 i think. So banding them will be great. They look wider because i've fitted 185 60's on them. I.ll start the bulged tyre revolution here and now! When engine is in it sits down. With all the gubbins in place it'll come down nicely. The back is low enough for now- i can remove the spacer between spring and seat and lower rear another 15mm:-)

Excellent pictures ;D I have already copied and the last ones to "this is how I have to do it " folder on my hard drive... Alas those god awful legs will have to go ! Just that small issue of the HA being a hell of a lot narrower than a HB, but I am sure my hammer set can adjust things as needed...OR do I use my spare HB shell and just copy things.... questions questions Good to see the adjustment on the gearbox leaver, I assume this will get the stick in line with the hole in the tunnel, having seen how long the gearboxes were I suspected it would of been like driving a land rover 101 ? On my time scale I think I should have started it by the time your back over here Alex, how do you cope with all the blood rushing to your head being upside down all the time? The gear lever will now pop out through the original hole- if the original hole was still there... It works just right on chevettes too. There is a young fella in nelson putting a 12a into a HA- but I don't think he's got far. Main thing to allow for is exhaust clearance around the column because its so low down compared to piston engines - although its only two pipes to fabricate. It would sit in nicely in an HA. Being upside down? you mean other hemisphere? We are actually on top- the maps are all wrong.

Yeah, those 185/60's would fit a lot better if those Victor rims were banded to 6J. BTW, the Elford turbo conversion is a must not a maybe! ;D

Getting ready for paint. Tidied up the engine bay and the seams around the wings etc- it amazes me how solid it is in places like that. Most cars i've had have been worse there. I put one coat of paint on but ran out- i have ordered more colour matched paint in a can. Then I tidied up the engine some more- ground down any casting marks in the iron plates- not so much for look but because the paint will go on better/smoother. I have to decide on a colour to piant the engine- thinking the same colour as the body but its a bit impractical. maybe a darker blue? See Resene colour chart in blue here... www.resene.co.nz/swatches/search.php?type=paletteHmmmm. ford riveria blue that i painted the rx3 was nice.. what ever colour i choose it wont be sprayed on this time - I will brush paint it on in enamel as it will stick better. I was forever touching up flakey paint on the chevette and rx3 engine plates.

yeah bay is painted but i want more coats on. The photo above though is of the primer coat. All project threads must include the primer coat shot! :-) still to decide on engine colour..

Been busy painting little bits and pieces here and there, straightening and tidying the front valance. Engine all ready to be painted- engine colour chosen- its pretty close to ford riviera blue and should (I hope) go well with car colour. I checked the sump mods for any leaks- one tiny one which weeped out after over an hour of sump sitting full of water. welded it up and checked again- seems ok now. I have also decided to paint in behind grill black. I want to make my own grill later on and with black behind it should look better. It will also be easier to keep looking tidy. Looks cool so far- do cars really need lights? I have also made a bolt on drain into sump for.....TURBO... not that I am definitely gonna fit it but if I do i don't want to be taking sump off again later on to have to do this. It bolts through sump wall into a captive ring with m5 nuts welded to it. I can remove it and have made a plate to bolt in place if I do. I will make a canister to weld onto pipe into sump- the canister will sit above oil line for turbo drain to run into- I have been told this will be a good idea? Is it? Will put up photo of it later when sump paint is dry. I have made sure that the drain into sump is same size and no smaller then pipe off bottom of turbo. I don't want a smoky turbo.

nice i'm thinking of putting a 13b (perhaps a single turbo) in a opel kadett c estate. put first have to finish my saloon... great to see it all fits together quite nice I was already wondering about the gearbox, its's freaking long! but it seems to be modified easy enough. I'll be following this, great work!

Cheers fellas! I enjoy putting updates...up? as it means I must be having progress. Anyway- I changed something today- its for the good. The colour of the engine has been bugging me- I thought the bright blue would go well with the 'oyster grey' but it just doesn't- it just looks wrong and I've not been happy about it. So I bought more paint today and have started repainting the engine while it is out again for the final time. The new colour is barely darker than the car colour and I think it will looks much better especially against black and the alloy castings on the turbo (if I use it...) photos tomorrow hopefully.

Engine is back in for good- I hope. It may well have to come out after first run because when I bought it the rear frost plug had popped out from a cold Welsh winter - so the large O ring water seals between plates and housings may well be damaged and need replacing. I wont know until its running. Anyway- it comes in and out so easy. I have repainted it to much the bodywork- I am really happy now with how it looks in there. Sooooo tiny too.. I love this stage when its not covered in a carb or alternator- looks fuss free. I'm liking the colours- the black against the blue (Oyster grey....) The tunnel is all welded up and hannah painted the floor- photos of that later- I love a painted floor. It transforms the tidyness inside.

Here's the inside looking all shiny ;D The gear lever is in a perfect position- really happy with it! Now onto problems.... I put the elford turbo assembly in roughly where it will go. First thing I had to change was the outlet position of the turbo- it now points up and I will have to make a connecting tube from it to the inlet manifold. I can put a hole next to light behind grill as air feed which is handy. There is enough room for a pod type filter. Lots of room behind turbo for exhaust down pipe. Need to plumb in a waste gate in there too. Secondly- the SU carb will be at a slight angle. Does this matter? Are they fussy about that? Will it affect the running- I don't think it should as the float bowl is under the carb but levels shouldn't affect the jet or needle? Anyone know? And lastly- the turbo has a slight amount of play in the shaft. Its about maybe 0.5 mm up and down. Its an old aireserch unit ; type 8317? T3 flange. Its just oil feed to solid bearings. I don't know whether the slack is taken up when it has oil fed under pressure. I'm taking it to a exhaust specialist friend tomorrow to show him but any ideas on how slop there should be? If it needs a rebuild then at this point in time I will just put a carb on and do turbo fit later on.

Alex, Id be tempted to fit it and see what its like. There needs to be some play in the shaft or the oil wont flow properly.
