Easy solution - Petrol V8 everything!
I think the whole scheme is pretty stupid and unfair, forcing people to get rid of "uncompliant" cars. I'm just glad I have nothing to do with London these days, my Defender is uncompliant! If anyone one has an older diesel and wants to do a LDN dawn drive, do it before 2012!
I also noted that one of their suggestions for an uncompliant car is to re-engine it, which is getting harder and harder these days...

It's in an attempt to improve the air quality in London. Remember all the bad publicity about air quality at the Beijing Olympics? I think the reason for introducing this so soon is to improve our air quality before the 2012 olympics. Modern diesel engines will be ok - but most won't be. Just be glad that (so far) we're not following the German example and banning non-catalysed petrol cars from our major cities. www.the-ace.org.uk/tightening-of-emissions-in-germany.html?searched=germany&highlight=ajaxSearch_highlight+ajaxSearch_highlight1I'd be expecting it here eventually plus tightening of use of Historic vehicles as in force across the bulk of the rest of the EU.

As most of the transport in London (cab's busses etc... ) is Diesel only - are they now taking all of them off the road? I've seen this spread throughout Europe - but NEVER seen them take out the biggest belchers - their own fleets. Good luck - I'm waiting on it here in Brussels - strange they make the rules down the road from here but ignore the damn things ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Other specialist vehicles derived from vans and minibuses Does this mean a delica td cant be used in london? Delica's are fine. They are factory produced people carriers. The specialist derived thing is pointing more towards vehicles that were vans or minibuses that are no longer (i.e. milk float is no longer a 'van') Amazo is spot on, the OP hasn't posted up the full facts and in truth, 99% of us won't be affected. Unfortunatley it looks like Pop-Up might fall into that 1% along with maybe PeteTong? For most of us there is no need to panic and if in any doubt, use the reg checker. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

this is strange tho
I've just done an EBAY search on toyota Hi Lux
a 91 registered Pick up truck come back as non compliant for 2012 onwards
same year Hilux surf come back as Not Subject to LEZ
now the only difference between them is the engine, the surf is a TD where the pick up is non turbo - oh and the surf is import - pick up isnt
now I'm not going to complain as i have a surf - but feel sorry for those with the pick ups

Surf is classed as a passenger 'car' as such whereas a Hilux pick-up is a commercial vehicle. That's where the difference lies ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

The LEZ won't affect anything registered as a car, basically because that would mean whatever mayor introduced it would be guaranteed to lose the next election. We're not at the German stage of banning everything over a certain age from going into cities (yet)...

My missus wanted the pickup, and she just wanted me to find her a newer one, however I have persuaded her to look at "estate" type ones like the Surfs which pleases me, she don't like the look of the Delicas (sorry Bruce) as she don'y like anything that ccould class her as "mumsy", she is mildy into cars and I have persuaded her that she can have something ridiculous if she wants, she was looking at Trans Ams on Ebay last night until she saw they only have 4 seats so I need to find a bloody great yank 4x4 truck with at least 5 seats with seatbelts for around 2 grand in the new year I reckon. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

All the Canadian guys are snapping them up because they look nothing like/much more rugged than the stereotypical 'Soccer Mom' people carriers like the Chrysler Voyager etc....which they are all embarrassed to drive due to the whole 'mumsy' thing. I think the L400's are more Mumsy though. Great motors still but certainly more 'convetnional MPV' than the utilitarian L300's Shame you've got to sell the pick-up Dude....bloody bureaucracy taking over! ![:-[](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/embarrassed.png) Hope you find something suitable as a replacement. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Well until they do as the Germans and i'm out! ;D Wonder if when they ban old cars from the Citys, do i get cheaper tax? lol

All of this is very nasty, but be thankful that you weren't living in Beijing in the lead up to their Olympics. I believe they 'removed' over 1 million cars from the roads for months before and during the games, presumably by enforcing bans on motorists. I recall hearing something about odd-numbered cars only being allowed to drive on odd days or something similar, hence halving the number of cars on the road. As long as you can car-pool to work with your next-door neighbour then you will be alright!

can you reregister a crew cab pick up as a car/passenger vehicle as it has 5 seats? If your not using it for a commercial basis obviously.

If your not using it for a commercial basis obviously. nope, not without serious mods, rebodying it and applying for a new identity might do it i guess, although technically it would still be derived from a pickup if it had a new identity you could class it as PLG i think.

One point not mentioned so far - you can retro-fit particulate filters for the LEZ & have the vehicle emmision tested & this renewed annually if you are particulalry attached to a vehicle.
Larger vehicles go up to Euro 4 in 2012, the 3.5t stuff only kicks in at Euro 3 - there is a list of engines that are pre-2002 but still meet Euro 3 available online somewhere. I suspect in due course the 3.5t stuff will also go up to euro 4, so if you are replacing, it would be worth getting something that's euro 4 or you are potentially only delaying a further replacement?
I have no issue with the people in power introducing increasingly tight standards for manufacturers to meet - I don't even mind the one-off "first year" tax on heavily poluting vehicles - what irritates me is when they "fast track" the improvements they want by telling the public they can't use a perfectly good vehicle.
Some of the standards an measurements are more than a bit daft anyway - for example, if they ever introduce this for cars, a Jaguar S-type diesel meets euro 3 with an auto box, but meets euro 4 with a manual box... if I drive across London in a manual red-lining it in every gear whilst you trickle across in the auto, which one of us has done the most pollutin' - obviously moi, yet the way things are going, the auto may be excluded from driving into London before the manual one!

My Uncles coach business was effectively bankrupted first time round the LEZ came into force. The modifications to the coaches ran into tens of thousands and for a small family business it was the push over the edge. They've now expanded the van hire side of the business and now this could have an effect as well (although i would guess most of the fleet of 25 vans is post 2002). Can't win! The joys of running a vehicle based business in South East London. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Larger vans, like the DI swb transit I just sold ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I havn't read it though here's a link if you want more info>>>> www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/lez/All larger vans that are registered as petrol are allowed in too:-X

I run splitter transit buses like the ones the railway boys use for the entertainment industry which means I do gigs in london quite regulary. One of my vans is not compliant which is stupid.
This is going to be a pain for the entertainment industry as most smaller bands can only afford older vans so therefore people will stop putting shows on in london.
There is another way around getting in and out of london in a non compliant vehicle. Take your plates off! £30 fine for not displaying is a snip compared to £200!
