The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in America. It is their 50th anniversary, so they decided to show how car safety has improved in the last 50 yrs. The cars.. a 2009 Chevy Malibu and a beautiful mint condition 1959 Chevy Bel Air. The results are dramatic.
FOOTNOTE: Remember the conditions outside are less than perfect. Please drive safely.

Its strange , I'm looking at that and still thinking the 59 did better than expected. He probably would have survived, (would have lost a leg or two id expect tho) But the first shot i was expecting to see the whole roofline fold back

Nice paint job on the chevy, rather too good a paint job for the amount of rust that flew out of it ?

I am still amazed at the speed of the airbag!! I think safety of all involved would be improved if moderns were made of cotton wool, my car wouldn't be so badly damaged then would it

(would have lost a leg or two id expect tho) And his face. I love the Z, but that's why my daughter doesn't ride in it. It's also why she's going to sit outside my house unused for a while. She can stay put in this weather. I have every faith in my own abilities, but one small mistake would be amplified tenfold if I got clouted by a modern. Chris EDIT: I refer to my car as a 'she'. [nspcc]I won't be leaving my daughter outside all winter[/nspcc]

Nice paint job on the chevy, rather too good a paint job for the amount of rust that flew out of it ? I copied and pasted the words 'beautiful mint condition'. I'm gonna be doing some digging on the net to find out how 'beautiful' & 'mint' it really was. I wonder how different the result would have been if they had both been fitted with engines?

yes old car are bad at accidents but that video is very much staged to make the modern car look so much better than it actually is the 59 is a tarted up scrapper not the minter its made out to be . truth of the matter is though is that your twice as likely to crash the boring mundane modern version . I'd rather die in an old car than be forced to drive new ones

How so? People have survived alot worse..... His head would have probably taken a smack. But the upper part of his body was still pretty much ok. Obviously no way to know internal injurys tho....
Most of the impact was from the wheel and front sus coming into the footwell and crushing his legs.
In the 50's he probably would have died, But modern medical science and all that....

Obviously no way to know internal injurys tho..... Urm, and the point of a £250,000 dummy is to look pretty? Of course there is a way to know. Every advance (including the grim period in the 50s and 60s when they used cadavers) in vehicle safety goes hand in hand with every advance in crash test dummy technology. Chris

I've seen this before sometime ago (possibly on here)
Although I don't deny modern motors are infinately safer than old stuff, It wouldn't suprise me if there had been some structural jiggery pokery on the bel-air in the interests of getting a shocking publicity stunt.
Maybe I'm just sceptical ;D
Know which one I'd rather be sat in!

Chris I'm saying theres no way for me to know. Not the people testing it! I.e theres no way to know from looking at the vid if he would have lived or died .

Go on eBay and buy a 50's steering wheel. When it arrives, hit yourself in the face with it. Let us know how you get on. Chirs

Got a banjo wheel in the garage.... Wanna borrow it? Ill let you try that one out... Now that right there is a steering wheel you don't want to go bouncing your face off. If only they could make cars with such features while still maintaining the modern standard of safety. Could be worse though, the 'safety' of open wheeled races in Sir Stirling Moss's day were... "One will be thrown from the vehicle on impact" Chris
