Given the recent moped threads I thought I might post my current project. Last month I spotted a guy on a small cafe racer and as it passed me (at around 45mph!) I realized it was a modified moped. That sent the wheels in my head spinning. I commuted for a few years in the early 90's on mopeds, A Suzuki FA50 and the eternally hated Honda spree (great little bike BTW) and knew the wife would be open to me having another. In 15 minutes google showed me what can be done with them and I hit craigslist looking for a suitable start. I found a dissasembled 78 Vespa Ciao 120 miles away in Gresham and went and bought it. For those that don't know a Ciao looks like this What I got for my meager amount of money was a few boxes of parts Luckily the thing came with some sort of triple tree front end isteadof the stock Ciao forks. I started by stripping it down and welding up some headlight brackets to hold the new bucket I ordered new tires in a size much too large for the frame and had to flare the rear fender for them to fit. Well worth it though. the 17X2.75" tires look awesome! I took a spare piece of tubing and welded in a top tube, acid etched the tank to remove all the rust and sealed it with some POR15 tank sealant. Then poorly painted the whole thing. I gotta say. I love it when I plan comes together. It looks exactly what I had in mind. The clubman bars from treatland.tv look perfect. The Malossi 75cc kit ships tomorrow. Next to build the motor! I need to decide which exhaust to go with. Damn 2 strokes! I know nothing of expansion chambers but I would love to try and build one.

Love the tyres think I'll do the same when I need new ones Just make sure you measure before you order. I almost ordered the 3 inchers and and so glad I didn't. There wouldn't be a chance of them fitting at all. www.treatland.tv is US based so shipping would be prohibitive but in the tire descriptions he usually tells you what will fit what. Actually most of the descriptions are pretty funny and worth reading anyway.

I took some time and blew apart the Dell'orto 12/10 SHA carb. There just isn't alot to it. Apparently the only difference between the small sha's and the large 13/13 is the size of the bore. There are quite a few DIY's on the web but it boils down to take it apart, drill it out, reassemble and rejet. I didn't have a 13mm reamer handy but I did have a 1/2" and .3mm isn't much of a difference Nice and clean. All back together and waiting for a motor to hang upon.

That's absolutely ace. If it helps from memory of my old stroker days pretty much any expansion pipe can be made to fit, seem to recall I used to use the standard downpipe then bang on any old pipe.

The kit is here! Look at the difference in pistons! First step is to bore out the case to fit the larger cylinder. I used the verftical mill with a boring head Perfect! The cylinder slots right into place Still a lot of porting and case grinding to do. I need to break out the Dykem and start scribing. I would like to do most of the enlarging the transfer ports and the boost port work on the mill. I love that machine.

Motor is together! I completely forgot to take pics of the porting process. Wrong or right I studied these two builds and used them as a guidline as to what to do. vespa-ciao.nl/page.php?id=187 and outofcontrolmopeds.blogspot.com/2009/12/super-stock-ciao.htmlI actually had to weld up the outside of the case to add material to make it safe to port. After boring, the case was just too thin. I got the Haynes manual today. Interestingly it has no torque specs whatsoever. I kept trying to look up what to torque the case or head to and there was nothing. It just said "tight". Got to love that carefree italian engineering.

Not just italian. A lot of brit bikes just tell you to do the cylinder head up tight....

Spent some time getting the brakes functional so I couldn't help installing the pedals and taking it for a human powered ride down the drive. One thing is for sure. I will be removing them and installing a kick start. WOW what a waste. Super short cranks and terrible gearing.
Ordered a new condenser, points and a side kickstand on saturday. As soon as the ignition stuff shows up i can install the flywheel and mount the motor in the frame.

A few things have been done since the last update. New condenser and points were installed and the flywheel went on. Motor is installed in the frame and the cables and harness are being routed. I had to bob, flare and trim the rest of the rear fender to clear the tire. These tires are more of a pain in the ass than I had bargained for. The fender didn't fit. The kickstand no longer fit, even the wiring to the tail light was in the way. The pedals are going away in favor of a pull start or something. All of the cables are now 12" too long and have to be shortened. I scored a tail light at a thrift shop for fifty cents. Off a trailer or something but it has a license plate light on the bottom and is far more befitting the stripped down nature of this ciao than the enormous stock unit The bolt pattern on the back of the light is even the same so if I choose to reuse the bracket I can. We will see how it plays out. The next and hopefully last purchases will be the pipe and some form of front fender. For now, finish the wiring and pour some gas into it and see how it goes.
