Hi all, long time reader but this is my first thread. Two weeks ago I picked up a car I've been hunting down for a while - a Suzuki Cappuccino! Bask in its three cylinder turbo glory, be amazed by the removable roof. Just don't mention the broken front spring. Or snapped exhaust. Or lack of reverse gear. Or the rust. Don't mention the rust. OK, enough of the rust already! To be fair, this is one of the better ones compared to some that come up, and this is going to be a long term restoration as opposed to a quick tart up.The gearbox is already out with parts ready for a rebuild of the reverse synchro hub tomorrow, as the retaining spring has broken and one of the keys escaped Luckily there doesn't appear to be any collateral damage so I've just got to rebuild the 'box and hope for the best. Anyway, inspiration welcome, ridicule expected and follow the progress here.

I love the little Cappuccinos most of all for being the most perfectly named car. Make it quick, repaint it nearly black-brown and rebadge it as an espresso. Keep coffee biscuits on the dash.

Very nice. Myself and the brother nearly bought one about 6 years ago but I didn't know enough about them so pulled out. Great fun to drive though.

Thanks for comments and replies mdh, thanks for link, and it is a '92 J-reg import! volksangyl, loving the idea of chocolate brown, maybe with cream roof and tan interior? But with the best will in the world, there is NO room to fit a second engine. GW, my brother, you really think I'd sell the Porsche before buying the next car? You underestimate me grasshopper! And the Capp is like your best pair of driving gloves, they look two sizes too small but slip them on and they just feel perfect! And yes, it is very rapid especially from standing start, turbo comes on boost (with a green light on the dash ) about 1500 rpm and redlines at 8.5k, even with a broken front spring she felt sure-footed without pushing too hard and I'm sure once she's ready she'll be a little B-road warrior. Quick update on the weeks progress with the gearbox, stripped and split the casing, bless it's little cotton ones: And managed to retrieve what looks like all the broken pieces from inside: But once I looked a bit closer I saw what the real problem was: The left hand synchroniser is the fifth / reverse hub, and the lip has worn on the reverse select side, compare it to the low speed hub on the right. So, after finding the hub assembly discontinued, Suzuki GB were great about sourcing a replacement which has now been ordered, so I'm just stripping the box to bare bones, cleaning everything up and gettin ready to rebuild. More progress and pictures as and when...

Station: This gearbox is easier than some, and it helps working at a Suzuki dealer and having access to the workshop manual / parts slides etc FWD boxes can be tricky in so far as needing to line up both shafts and all selector shafts before slotting them into the case. On this box the selector rods are bolted into the upper case, and the shafts are installed individually as you go. BatFastard: Yup, they certainly disintegrate quicker than a chocolate teapot given half a chance. At least on yours they patched it with metal rather than the fibreglass sheets I pulled off mine Thinking long term I'll probably do similar, strip it right back and make sure all the rot gets done at once. On brighter news, after some delays with discontinued parts and pesky British weather, the box is now rebuilt with 6 working gears. Pics!! Box stripped and casings washed down: Compare old and new selector hubs: Lower casing with counter shaft installed with new bearings: And with input and main shafts with new bearings: So now I have the box rebuilt, I need to clear some space in the garage to strip the rest of the car for some winter tim worm extermination...
