Hey all, I'm sure a few will know i've currently got a honda melody. Sometime maybe next year when the insurance runs out, i'd like a moped rather than a scooter. Reasons being, i prefer the look and safer feel of bigger wheels, small wheels are horrendous in the wet and thus i've already fallen off twice. I also want something i can derestrict, the melody isnt so much as restricted, its just built to go 30, you can tune it with new pipes etc, but the price i paid for it doesnt justify such things. I'm on a really tight budget like i was with the melody, i got the melody needing work for £100, so something like £150 is the budget, though I'm probably right in thinking this is probably impossible. Ideally, i want something with a niceish looking frame, so that i can pull something like this off: Looking at those bikes standard you wouldnt imagine such things were possible. So really, I'm looking for a moped, that i can derestrict/tune, i don't really want a 125 because my mum wouldnt trust me on one, but a 70cc/90cc sounds nice. Moddable is preferable. Big ask i know, but any ideas?

If you do not get caught up in the whole CatC, CatD,E, F G...... etc thing, you may well pick up something very nice thats been written off by insurance due to panel damage, which makes no difference if you plan on making it into a bare bones chopper.
Think laterally, and look at Belgian and Dutch Moped sites for inspiration.

Go 2 stroke screamer if you can... PUCH and tomos are the way to go for tuner. The only problem with that is they are blatantly obvious when they are tuned. They hardly idle, Are louder than a loud thing and are pretty smokey low down. Not to mention having a akropovic pipe hanging off the side.....
If that aint for you. Go for a honda 90. 12volter (square headlight) is easiest. Then go on monkeybikeuk to get some tuning parts. Being a 4 stroke itll be nice n quick with the standard pipe still on So will look nice n subtle. Just don't expect it to handle that well. Leading link and drum brakes are never gonna be too good. Although a set of cg125 forks and a disc brake front end will fit with minimal fuss..

I'd love a cub, its what i was trying to get hold of before i got my melody.
I'd like to see anyone bag one (unless they get some characteristic retro rides luck, which i don't get) for less than £300.

The mopeds with the largest aftermarket seem to be piaggio/vespas, puch, motobecane and honda. At least they have the most avaliable for the lowest prices. Sachs seemed to be one of the most expensive brands to buy a kit for. I got a vespa ciao because it was the first I found and it had a large amount of cheap hop ups but if I were to really go looking for the "ultimate" I would find an old motobecane moblyette

Got my heart set on one of those, any idea where i could pick a running project up?
Also, how much difference would a 70cc kit make?

Dunno, here in Holland they're on every corner for between 50-150 euro. 70cc makes a big difference, especially in pulling power, although i've seen tuned 50cc's go very fast.

Well the 70cc kit is just a new head and piston kit, plus i'd probably fit an expansion chamber exhaust.
Recon it would add much MPH?

Yes. Stock engine, 70cc Cylinder, 15mm carb, expansion exhaust and a bit of tuning/setting up would see 50+mph with the right gearing.

Seen both those ebay ones, the first one looks like a heap and the second one its quite a lot of money. I really like that car and classic one, but its miles away for me 80 miles or so.

A mate of mine is saving me one of these in Spain, I'm hoping to collect it in the new year. I used to love them as a kid, as they weigh about the same as a baby hamster, so obviously I'm already planning on a engine upgrade... has anybody put a 125cc+ motor in a scooter? I would like to put a geared engine in it.
