Just a quick one with some pics I've decided that the new bars are too wide some I'm going to lop this much off the ends That way it'll all look more compact and neat as I mocked up my mirrors and it jut seemed too wide. So I'll sort that soon as my new grips arrive And this is how she stands now (Mark I haven't yet adjusted the chains following your diagram, shall be doing it tonight ) I gave the paint another healthy coat of carnuaba wax and let it properly set before buffing the buffalos off it. I'm considering painting my spokes black too but I'm not sure yet. I'm waiting till I find a suitible match as a touch up paint before I finish the rear arch, I have a peice of trim cut to size to finish it off when thats done. There are numerous chips in the paint and the scab of rust on the rear arch that I want to deal with Hopefully I'll have my new box of goodies from the Netherlands some timethis week and I can build the rest of the motor Anyone know how the centre stands work on these? When I got it the back tyre was flat an the stand worked fine, now it just about touches the floor if I lean it over it's at least an inch too high to be of any use! (hence it leaning on the table!) Tata for now!

Looks nice next to the christmas tree. About the piston ring, did you make sure you did this: You should be able to squeeze the piston ring enough to fit inside the cilinder with just your fingers, i never used screwdrivers. Also, a little oil inside the cilinder might help.

Haha cheer mate Yeah I did that but I didnt put any oil in there - I managed to get it close but I just couldnt get it all in (wahey) there seems an awful lot of 'tension' on the piston ring! When I get my new one I'll put some oil in the cylinder and try again without the screw drivers! It was so close when it snapped!!

Cor, you've got an understanding partner, allowing you to grind inside the house....
Sounds odd with the ring, as if it was too big.... try the next one in the bore without the piston in order to check the ring gap.

She is, she's amazing Not exactly a build update but closely related - I realised that being my first ever bike I have no suitable clothing for riding the Puch! I had a search on eBay and found a cool Suzuki racin jacket - totally over the top for my Puch Maxi so gonna look a right berk - perfect! It was listed as being really grubby and I managed to win it fir a tenner! It has all the armour etc for sliding safely along tarmac ;D Not got much of a before pic It's covered in cool old patches including at least one that fits with the Puch - NGK! Another cool badge pre cleaning Spent my hour lunch break cleaning the jacket and the badges with dilted upholstery cleaner and magic sponges gently and scrubbed the badges before wet vaccing it and leaving it to dry and then last night - between X-file episodes - I used a load of leather food I bought for the Shogun seats and it came out pretty well That is all ;D

Put piston in cylinder first! Reason? it's VERY easy to snap the ring in the slots in skirt so put ring gap so i follows the edge and turn piston right when it just enters the bore don't go to far it can pop out in the channel. Check also so the old flywheel key isn't stuck in a magnet in the wheel. Ruined a 80 cc zundapp when it happened to me........

Put the piston in the cylinder before you put the ring on? How's that gonna work? don't quite get what you mean I think! Spoke to Moparts won't get my new ring till next week but thats ok - I'll just play with it a bit and add more layers of wax! Oh and I found the old flywheel key when I was tidying up! Doh... Thanks for the advice though!

Nah i think he means to remove the piston from the conrod, then insert the piston into the bore with the ring gap in the open part of the skirt. When it's fully seated in the bore (about 1 cm in i guess) rotate the piston so it can be connected to the conrod again.
I think it's a bit complicated that way but in theory it should work.

Oh I see - sounds over complicated to mr! Getting the gudgeon pin circlips on was a pain in the - doing it with the cylinder hanging off the top of te piston would have been nigh on impossible!

You could just borrow a ring compressor from someone, or even buy one. That would be sure to get the job done properly. Did you check the ring gap before you tried to install it? Checking the ring gap is done by putting the ring into the cylinder on it's own, then using the top of the piston to push it slightly into the cylinder so that you can be sure that it's sitting perpendicular to the cylinder wall. Then, you should be able to run a feeler gauge of the size corresponding to the required ring gap between the ring ends. If it's too tight then you may need to file back the ends of the ring.

Cheers mate, reckon I'll be alright this time round as I didn't put any oil in the cylinder last time and it was so close to goin in before I snapped it! Just a bit heavy handed sometimes! I think if it was oiled it'd be enough to get it on properly. There I a postage strike in the Netherlands at the moment unfortunately so might be longer than hoped till I can have another go
