Brilliant info, cheers Jonny!
I have just popped outside and had a quick tinker. I disconnected the throttle linkage, then set the balance bar roughly so both carbs butterflies are fully closed at the same time, I had it so the right hand one was open a little when the left was fully closed I think from when I was adjusting the idle incorrectly with the balance bar screw
Warmed the car up to operating temp and then using screw 2 in the diagram, adjusted the idle down from about 2,200rpm to more like 1,100rpm which seems like an ok idle speed. The car drives fine and doesn't try to stall or splutter or anything.
I need to leave the car to cool now and try starting it later as I wonder if this will have affected it's starting ability (no manual choke mechanism connected at the moment)?
If all is well I will leave it at that for now to save doing any damage, and order the book you recommend for bedtime reading. If not I'll have a fiddle with the idle mixture screws as you recommend and see if I can lean out the idle mixture as required.
My brother in law said he has a tool for balancing carbs, will this be the tool I need (synchrometer)? He said it's something you stick in the trumpet and it has a ball in that reads off the suction or something like that?
