hi all. near a local scrappy I frequently go to, iv seen a hillman hunter for sale. it is in a little bit of a sorry state. the front of the wings are all filler and the paints a bit sorry for itself (this is kinda what drew me to it so doesnt worry me too much.) only thing worrying me bout it is the floor. I had a little tap round and the rear may need a small replacement and passenger may need a bit of work. engine isnt working but turns over so wont be too hard to fix. comes with a bootfull of used spares and a box of NOS. the thing I'm asking is, how easy are parts to get? how cheap? anyone had one for a bit of a user reveiw? oh he's wanting 400 but I might bargain with him. thanks guys for your trouble.

had an estate for 5 years.. by far the single best car I have ever owned... wings are getting hard to find although fibreglass replacements are available, engines are strong but if its got aluminium cylinder head (hunter GL GLS GT) and the engine is fubar and you get an iron head engine make sure you get everything as the manifolds are completely different.. they drive really well for what is a 27 year old design, and technically I thnk you will find they were the worlds most sold car as they Peykan only ended production year before last so it did eventually outsell the VW beetle lol... various firms sell the bits for them , RG Grimes, speedy spares, ebay of course. piece of P to work on... if its half decent bar the front wings I would get it. although there is one for sale on here as well for 300 notes I think it was.. in the cars for sale section on the thread entitled "wanted Hillman Hunter" BTW if its an estate its one of a very rare breed as they reckon there could be as little as 27 left

As the others have said, Speedy Spares for parts (the took over the Grimes stock when it shut down) or there's a guy in Norfolk too whose name escapes me at the mo but I met him at Beaulieu and he was a decent chap as well. Chances are it will need usual welding underneath and is likely to have been repaired in various places before. I think £400 for a non running car with no MOT is a bit strong. They really aren't worth very much (except for the top of the range cars) when good so values for project cars are not high either. I'd say £300 absolute tops but if its bad in lots of places then really its only worth scrap money £150-£200 I can't tell you much about how a standard one drives as I lowered mine after about a month of ownership Mine's also a povo 1500 which is adequate for daily use but nowhere near as quick as a 1725 would be. They don't weigh much (930kg for a non overdrive Hunter saloon) so scoot along quite well.

ok.. how do they drive?? mine was an estate like Seths, it was originally a GL so had aluminium head engine 4psd (no od) btu by the time I got it it had had an iron head engine fitted as the owner had killed 4 engines....(worst car owner ever) they had had it from new an put nearly 300,ooo miles on it..it would sit at 70mph on the mtorway all day long and they are surprisingly lively, the estates will also swallow large copious amounts of stuff.. only thing I didnt like.. an its really petty.. when you turn the ignition lights on they a bit hidden inside them massive dash pods (early ones had strip speedo though which is cool as fook)

From experience if its a bit rusty on the outside it'll be very rusty and/or bodged underneath.

Not an expert on Hunter saloons but have done some extensive work on a Hunter coupe (fastback rapier) and to be honest despite its good points, I'd wanna pay a lot less than the asking price. Boot lid and bonnets are not a problem but front wings can be a relatively expensive fix. You didn't mention front and rear valence panels. If these are ok I'd maybe with a reasonable discount but if they aren't, I'd look for a better one.

rear valance has a £5 coin sized hole in it but I think il just patch that and just behind the rear wheels need repair. I know 400 is way over the odds to ask for it, what would you say was a sensible offer?
EDIT you can see thhe hole behine the left hand wheel in the boot pic

Looks like a 1500 then. And some free patina!
Repair sections for the front of the wings pop up now and again which may help. But essentially it is a povo spec model in not particularly good condition so I stand by my earlier value of approx scrap value. £150? At least you won't loose out then if you uncover anything horrific. You may find it could be turned into a reliable driver though with a bit of time and effort.

hard to tell if its 1725 or not.. will be on block by the oil filter housing.... if its got dipstick going into tube in side of sump itself rather than down through block its the smaller engined one.. that as far as I know is only external difference between the 3 bearin an 5 bearing motors... what on earth has happened to it though.... has it been shot?? never seen rust spots so localised.. judging by the fact its had both strut tops I would be very carefully checking EVERYWHERE

A fair price is tough..... Seth and Rottie are pitching valid points and when you look at it there's hardly a panel that doesn't need some attention if only surface. Probably Seth's valuation isn't far wrong.... you could argue that the fact it won't cost much to get it home gives you 50 quid's worth to play with. £200 would have to be tops for me.
TBH I've seen a lot better ones go for 3 -400 and sometimes that extra cash can save you a lot of time and money in the longer term.

well thats good. i think my top would be 100. if he doesnt take it i wont take it. il try and get it looked at by a indepentant mot garage to see what it needs doing structurally. then go from there i think. also aparently it was in a garage with a rubbish roof. had tiny little drips on it constantly so that wouild explaint the mentally precise rust spots. tbh the condition of the body (minus the front wings) is what drew my attention to it.

my old hunter wagon was tatty, but it hadn't had it's top mounts or floor welded
I'm with seth, shoot for it at scrap price, then if it turns out to be borked you can break for parts and then frag it / sell for bangering
good luck - but be careful!
