Hi, Smart cars are registered as either Silver or Black because that is the colour of the base unit. It doesn't matter what the colour of the panels are because they supposedly have the option of being changed if you want a different colour. In BT,s example of the VW harlequins that is the colour of the shell, all the other panels are bolt on.

From what i can remember from years back the only thing thats improtant is what colour the door shuts are assuming your giving it a quick blow over (before the days of vinyl wrapping). Dad had a harvest gold maxi, painted it white, drove it as it was, all docs said it was still harvest gold, then when he got the log book back saying it was white the doorshuts and basicly anything else that wasnt under the carpet got painted white. Id imagine that if you had a white car and wrapped it black and told your insurance company it was white, it might get classed as a mod, but if registered as black and you tell them its black they wouldnt bat an eyelid. Of course wrapping a car is a bit different to painting it so i could be talking out of my chuff, but then when it comes down to the cars identity it could be classed as the same.
like the harliquins, if the roof and doorshuts are red then its classed as a red car and thats how it comes as standard, but if you start slapping some random coloured panels on a standard red car, its still red, but is it then classed as a mod?

My old -ex army- 101 Forward Control was listed as Black/Green in the colour section of the V5.
My yellow 110 is also down as Red -it's original colour- but is quite obvious it used to be red when you look at panels inside or under the bonnet.
I tried changing it once and it came back unchanged. No grief in 7 years since the change.
