Hi guys, I need to get some wheels off a car, problem is they have locking wheels nuts and I don't have the key. They are the ones that have 3 holes set into them and a ring on the outside that just spins if you put anything on it. I've tryed hammering a socket on but the ring just spins. Tryed a chissel on the one hole, but there isn't enough surface to get it on properly. Can't weld a nut on because of how set back the nut is in the wheel. Any ideas chaps? Only thing I can think of is to drill them out, but don't fancy that. Or I could always do thisHave some pictures

i have one of those universal sockets, its like a lod of spring loaded wires packed into a socket head[hope that makes sense] it cost me peanuts a few years ago, it hads removed many different locking wheelnuts over the years [with theowners consent of course!]

yes ,it started badly ,petered off in the middle and the least said about the end the better!!!

machine mart sell locking wheel nut removers
also mosst tyre shops should carry them, but will charge you to use them!
i have got them off using a odd size socket hammered into it, or even a key from another set again hammered into it!

Before trying any of the above (perfectly reasonable) suggestions do the other 3 wheel nuts up good 'n tight to maximise the chance of it working

The above wont work as they`ll just spin on the collar,as thats what its there for! You need to get a small sharp chisel and whack the collar off,then whack a socket onto it. Used to hate doing these types when i worked in the scrapyard but as hardcore says get the other 3 done up as tight as you can to take the pressure off the locker.

I've drilled them out before, but the easiest way i've found it to drill 10 mm hole in it and whack a big stud extractor in.. simples..

Is there anywhere on the nut you can put a centre-punch to see if you can give it a smack to free it? Locking nuts shouldn't be torqued up all that much although many tyre places will just gun them up like normal nuts. Locking nut removal sockets are a lot cheaper than I thought - about £20 for a set. If the free options don't work, I'd just go buy a set.

I tried the laser locking wheel nut removal tool from machine mart but the 2 sizes didnt fit once I had cut off the sliding collar. Irwin Bolt grippers did the job tho.

I've removed trilocks on a Mini before by first using a screwdriver to split the spinny collar off and then a big pair of mole grips on the exposed nut. The design of those lockers is so poor they're rarely that tight.
A few weeks later I found the locknut key. Grrrrrr.

the universal socket isnt affected by the sliding collar , its the pins that slot ionto the holes on the nut that turn the nut [if you understand that you'll understand owt!!]

Is there a gap to fill the space inside the collar with metal chips and glue to stop it spinning separately?

The sliding collars chisel off easy enough. an 18mm socket fitted over the ones I took off, but the proper locking wheel nut removal tools (with a sharp, left handed thread on a taper inside them) work much better.

Irwin Bolt grippers did the job tho. Those are great. The set I've got have got me out of many a bind, but mine don't go into big enough sizes for wheel nuts. I think there's an extension set with bigger sizes though. I suspect that locking nut removers work on the same principal, with left-handed teeth that dig into the head the more you twist.
