New water pump arrived , took it to graft and set to work on it... New pump: And after a bit of fettling and a "Nose job" Much shorter. Before (old pump): After (new pump): Also thought I'd try my knackered old rad in for size just to give me an idea of clearance. I found when trying to fit the rad that it still wouldn't go in due to the brackets on the rad which bolt it to the front panel being wider at the top... So to see what a rad would fit like when fitted flush to the front panel I chopped the water outlets off the rad and tried it in backwards (the other side of the rad is flush fitting)... It aint massive amounts of clearance , but I reckon it will do the job.

Was looking at the pulley for the new pump and decided that it had plenty meat on it to remove the studs and replace them with countersunk bolts which will give me an extra 10 - 12mm of rad clearance. Just waiting on the bolts arriving (ordered them yesterday) so I set to work on the pulley tonight.... First hole: All four holes done: The pulley is made from very thick stuff as you can see in this pic , so still has plenty meat on it: New radiator is also on it's way this week.

Finally got the crankcase breather system sorted tonight so that it works perfectly without affecting the engine idle. Problem I was having before was that since I fitted the 4 barrel carb the engine would idle perfectly without the breather connected but as soon as I coupled the flame trap to the port on the carb it would slow the idle down , starve the engine of fresh oxygen then eventually just cut out. I was originally running the large style flame trap which screws into the drivers side rocker cover in the hole where the oil filler is on the opposing rocker cover , this was fine when running at high revs which is when the crankcase pressure needs relieving to avoid any engine damage/oil leaks etc.. but problems arose when at idle as this is when the engine produces max vacuum but draws in very little air to keep it going , hence the crankcase gasses killing the combustion process. I've got round the problem by reverting to the old style rover P5 and P6 "in line" flame trap and removing the screw in tower flame trap , in it's place i've fitted a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve from a chevy V8 which i've worked into the base cut from an old flame trap , this lets the crankcase gasses past at high revs but closes off during periods of high vacuum (idle). The new system works brilliantly and the engine now runs swweeeeet! :-) I've opened up the small hole at the back of the passenger side rocker cover to make sure air can be drawn into the crank case from the other side of the engine to prevent crankcase vacuum occurring due to "over breathing" , I'll be fitting a small K&N style breather filter to this port to prevent curse word entering the engine. As an extra added bonus all this has also helped tidy up the pipework no end! It looks far better than it did with the original flame trap. B) Enough talk , pics..... The way it was originally set up with large flame trap , this is when it would not idle: The old flame trap alongside the peice I cut from another to make the chevy PCV valve fit: PCV valve ready to assemble: PCV valve and old style P5/P6 flame trap: And the finished article: In other news I've also plumbed in the heater matrix with some one piece moulded hoses and plumbed in the brake servo properly incorporating a hardline section to avoid the throttle linkages etc. Water pump pulley is at the powder coaters. Next stop - radiator and hogger hoses , fans , electrics.

Just a nice little bright vibrant contrast against the black to break things up a little , what with even the rocker civers being black against a black engine bay. Trust me it'll need it once the whole truck is painted black. lol ;D That purple/pink is a sneaky colour too , looks clean and bright even when it's dirty and oily.

Rad has been back out again , gave it a coat of paint before re-fitting it. Also added some rubber trim to the front panel which has finished it off nicely: And then we get to the cool part , Edelbrock Elite series air cleaner. It took a hell of a lot of fettling to get this squeezed under the bonnet , including having to chop up my recently fabricated throttle bracket and re make it. Eventually got it all to fit under the bonnet with the addition of a 2" drop pan base for the air cleaner. Pics: And clearance??..... Oooooh theres a good 10mm there mind. lol:

one bottom hose sorted and she's now running with coolant in! I was having trouble making up a bottom hose that didn't kink due to the crazy route it was having to take then it came to me one night in a dream... AGAIN! I must be constantly thinking about V8's as I'm dreaming about them all the time at the mo. In my dream I saw a kit car with a V8 in it and it had one of those "flexi hose" top hoses on with the ridges in where you can bend them any shape , I woke up that morning and just thought "curse word , why didn't I think of that".... then realised I did. lol One phonecall to Andrew Page later when I went to work and a big bendy hogger hose arrived , it was even the correct length with no cutting required. SORTED! Coolant in , bled up , mint! Also this week I've sourced and fitted a Lumenition adjustable rev limiter which matches my ignition module , WINNER! A rev limiter was always on my shopping list as I know how easy it is to over-rev the Rover engines but so far I had been looking at Omex units then I found the Lumenition one entirely by accident on E-bay... nobody else seemed to bid apart from the £20 bid that was on it when I found it , one last second bid later and it was mine for £23! FANTASTICO!!! B) I've dialed it in to just under 5k for now till I see how she behaves on the road. Also this week I've replaced the knackered old Champion spark plugs with a new set of NGK's , what a difference!! It had been running lumpy as curse word and was misfiring it's cock off , this had seemed to get worse since I put the coolant in which made me curse word my pants thinking there was a head gasket problem , but as soon as I gapped and fitted the new plugs she runs PERFECTLY! Silky smooth on all 8 , the air cleaner now sits billiard smooth at idle where it used to judder about all ower the shop. Anyway , what good would a Sunday morning update be without pics eh?..... You can see the new rev limiter here mounted next to the ignition module..
