I live in an ok part but i would never leave my doors open, they'll ransack anything. Besides i have to carry things in the boot that would be no end of grief if they went missing, Silky, spray paint, crowbar etc. To lug them in and out of the car every day would be a right ball ache. However i do agree with the principle of what you suggest, hence leaving the glovebox open to show there's nothing in there etc

I used to leave my cars unlocked but it became a habit and one day I borrowed my Mum's (then new) Scorpio and left it the same way...she went up to my room, got my record collection out and left it out the front of the house. I lock my cars now. This was twenty years ago now but it's never been forgotten!

only pitfall of the leaving car unlocked, is that if someone does pinch it and the insurance find out that car was unlocked, then you might not get a payout for it, (i guess this would only apply if you were lucky enough for the car to be recovered, as i guess if it was fragged you would never know anyway)

I don't understand the ' I live in an okay, or nice, part of town' thieves will travel to the better parts of town, so your more likely to be targeted than if you leave your car in a bad part of town. buy a decent immobiliser and or alarm - its the only way to deter thieves I have several of these 110db disclock alarms for locking the steering wheel to prevent theft of my cars, and all my cars have descreet key operated electronic immobilisers fitted www.xenasecurity.com/product/motorbikes/alarm/page1/and I only leave a spare wheel and jump leads in the car when left overnight in the street, if someone wants to break in on the off-chance ive left something valuable in there - I cant stop them, but I will declare jihad on their sorry smack-loving bodies and all the local scum know of my zero tolerance attitude to anyone who invades my property

Sorry to hear that Ed, and everyone else, that sucks big time. Not had any problems here since putting the CCTV system in, but I used to get stuff stolen a lot, like alloy wheels from outside.

I have my own little detterent for thieves. When I park the car up I pop the bonnet flip the quick release on the battery earth and shut it again. Works a treat.
As for the locking doors thing I lock mine as otherwise when I go to use it the seats in the wrong place, the steering wheels moved, everything electric is on and all the windows have been wound down. Oh the joys of living on a council estate full of kids.

i like how everyone on here has now told thieves that they don't lock their cars, and also Pauldaf44, you may want to edit your post as everyone now knows your anti theft device and how to get the car working again.

Yeah, that's my next move.. installing a pair of cameras and a recording system. One camera looking into my yard and the other looking down the lane outside. Might act as a bit of a deterrent and maybe provide evidence if something does happen but I know nothings guaranteed. Mega security going in my workshop over the next couple of days too.

I just had a custom NS jump bike nicked from the back of my house too, the worrying part is someone must have had thier eye on it for a while, and knew where it was kept - luckily the insurance paid out, but i stil lost a couple hundred quid I used to leave my panda 4x4 unlocked on my drive, just realised how stupid i was really ;L

I agree with team blitz. ileave mine unlocked. if they're trying the door handle, they're intending to get into the car anyway, it saves a great deal of damage. If they're trying the door handle then they're trying to see if it's open. Surely if someone is walking along a row of cars trying the door handles they're going to go for the one that's open rather than going to the effort of breaking into another car? Same reason why I don't leave my front door open when I'm out - not everyone that robs a car is a "car thief" as such, the majority are going to be opportunists. Here's a nice, retro, on-topic picture from Gone in 60 Seconds to make this thread all pretty an' stuff

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.
