Had a good offer on this today, and I'm in love with the xj6 so this could be the end.. ironicaly the guy came to look at the xj6 but made an offer on the 944! Also, my friend has been looking for a 944 for months, all the ones we have seen (7) have had a slightly noisy box among other things, and all the ones I have had also had a whine and a bit if backlash, as well as chatter on idle. I was thinking to replace the one in this car, but the chances of getting a quiet one are slim, and the chances of getting a louder one are high. Has anyone had a silent one ?(not S2 or turbo) I'm starting to think they all do it..

Your right - they all do it. Have you tried using Swepco oil in it. Apparently it reduces the noise. Some swear by it.
I have a turbo and it doesnt make the sound.
It will be sad if you do have to let her go...

Be a shame if it has to go. I know nothing of XJ6 but imagine there must be some good reason why you'd want one? I had a 1974 or 5 XJ12 once. I swore I'd never own a car with 2 petrol tanks again! It cost a fiver to start the bloody thing! Mind you, she did go well considering what a big old bus she was! Good luck with whatever you decide on?

Noisy gearbox affected the 944s from new! Apparently they could not get the clearances tight enough from the factory, so much that Porsche stopped repairing the 'boxes under warranty (but this could also be hearsay!). It was said the 968 was killed off since Porsche could not apparently refine it more than it was in terms of panel gaps, engine etc. (968 was effectively an updated 944 after all . A solid centred ( sprung centred clutch) will show this up more from what I understand, but unlike the original rubber centred clutches they will not fail and give you a shakey clutch pedal when the car is warm and stuck in traffic.

Once I get rid of some of my fleet! The 205 may stay (owned with a mate) but the 'B may go. Two of the cars will need to stay as dailies! At the moment I am deciding between the 306 and 106 going. If the Pug could run on veggie (it's Lucas pumped...) I would have sold the 106 ages ago. But it is not too bad on fuel either, and is a great hoot for a modern .

I have bought a Jag supercharger, anyone got any info on wether its best to get the right size pulley to lower the boost, or just open up the wastegate/bleed out the air?
As I only need about 6-7 psi for now.

Anyone got any info on wether its best to get the right size pulley to lower the boost, or just open up the wastegate/bleed out the air? As I only need about 6-7 psi for now, the charger is from an xjr6, though I think my bottom pulley is smaller so it should help a bit. My understanding is that opening the wastegate to bleed off air works well, but does present a bigger load to the engine than changing the gearing (since you're compressing more air than you need), so reducing the amount of power available from the engine at a given boost pressure (and making the fuel economy a little worse as well).

it's also repeatedly compressing the air - so it's gonna get rather warm too! New pulley

It would be interesting to see if the workings of a Ninemeister kit could be figured out in this instance . Either way, it will make for one thrilling machine .

Should be epic with a charger. After reading about a 944 with turbo'd Audi 5 pot and over 700bhp, I like them even more!

Funny you say that! I had been pondering on the audi engine conversion for a while. The bellhousing fits many VAG lumps. I love the 5 pot and have owned many quattros, but it would need to be a 20v tbo to make the hassle worth it. Problem is one of those engines costs a lot. I chose the charger route as I think I can do it all for under £500 initialy, and if its good then I will develop further for good power. The 944 engine has no charictor, no sounds and no real power. Porsche should have done better, a 5 or 6 pot would have suited it much more. The 944 S2 was better but still not what it should have been. The bigges problem with the 5 pot conversion is that I may as well just buy an audi s2 and have 4wd too.

Sorry to jump in but i saw your car on Pistonheads and drooled over it with the Azev's on.
You mention the bellhousing fits up to lots of VAG stuff, do you know if it will bolt up to an AHC/ABZ 4.2 V8 per chance?

The bigges problem with the 5 pot conversion is that I may as well just buy an audi s2 and have 4wd too. The logical conclusion there then is a 5pot engined 4wd 944... ;D Which is a bit similar to something I was looking into the other day actually, but with an extra cylinder tacked on.
