While I was there, I also removed this old sign from a pole in the pile...... very pleased with it (an no real idea why I like it so much, but it will go up on the side of the shed)  That's lovely - will it clean up or is the surface knackered? I scored these from a skip outside my neighbours house this week - 3 original Victorian pine doors with brass fittings (and one modern repro one) - don't know what I'll use them for yet but way too good to chuck out.   Grizz - do you need any building materials? I recently rented a new workshop and last owner was a builder who left loads of bricks, tiles, timber, RSJ's etc behind. Pop round and have a look if you're coming to Wheels Day next week.... Hi Kerry Thanks for the invite. We are doing ze Wheels day but are actually booked into a hotel the Thursday. Suspect you wont be around then. Plan is not to interfere with the sign as it took years to weather like that. If I wanted a new one, Ebay would be the answer. |

This came to Grizz Towers this week while I was away. Lewis123 offered these bits out free from an aborted project months ago, loads of talk but no takers. I had scored a free wood lathe and he offered to meet up with Nicola while I was away at work this week to trade the two piles of junk. I am hoping to add the 10hp mower engine, and rear drive axle off a ride on mower to the disability scooter I recently got. I will leave them alone and try to finish some of the other random jobs I need to do around the garage and shed first.  On Wednesday night I was out for a work meeting about 3hrs from home when I got a call just after 9pm from an unnamed benefactor to ask where he could put some skip treasures he had saved for me from a job. When I got home on Thursday afternoon, this lot was waiting for me. Can only say I was a happy man.  Of course I had to try out the one Belisha Beacon on the dummy pump. Fit, ratio is better than the IKEA light I recently bought.  |

Hope it all works out for you mate - thanks for the lathe.
Both the engine an box are both full of oil, so just watch out for storing them upright. The engine is good and strong. The electric start works, it just needs the wiring re-wired. The blue wire below the carb is the kill wire. Ground it to the motor and it will stop, leave the circuit open and the engine will run. The starter relay works, just power the low power side with 12 volts.
The trans axle does work, but with the big wheels and heavy buggy we fitted it to, the just wasn't man enough. It may work for you with smaller wheels on a light skooter. We have modified it and increase the gear ratio by about 10 times inside, that is part of the reason it didn't push a heavy buggy.

Not a tip treasure as such, but acquired a piano from down the road yesterday. About 4 keys don't work so seems a decent find. Did look slightly strange wheeling it down the middle of the road though ! I'll shove a picture up if anyone's interested.

Apparently ppl can't get rid of pianos for love nor money at the moment. Nobody wants such a large item in the house and few ppl play them. We had one in my old house. I never bothered to learn to play it despite it being there for 5 years.

I got offered a pianola (the type like you see in old westerns playing off a roll) all working for free but couldn't manage to think of a way to lift it in/ out of the van without a hospital visit, ended up in the peoples garage, apparently they had had it on ebay a few times with no takers.

But first I need to cleeean it up, and in a way that does not leave you covered in oil of grease when you do use it. Yesterday evening Nicola and I went for a walk along the Medway river, this is where her pipe collecting thing started as there used to be a lot of prison ships on the river, and clay pipes were tossed overboard when used. I love walking there, as there is always some interesting debris that the river washes up. Yesterday there was a mini TV tube, which I nearly brought home to incorporate into something..... no idea what though, but I let it be. Further on, there was a 6 foot, very rotted and old wooden post, with a 12 inch spike through it. ( I wanted the spike) so carried it a long way back toward the car, but then stopped at a guy who had just pulled a large houseboat out of the river onto dry moorings for maintenance, I stopped there, and asked him for a hammer, once he understood what I wanted to do, he disappeared for about 3 minutes and came back with a selection of tools, and we proceeded to remove said spike with its crust of rust. Back home I cleaned it up with a large ball pein hammer, and also cleaned a shorter 6 incher, followed by a quick weld up on both sides. I then mounted it on a bit of wood I also found yesterday alongside the river. Still have to see what Nicola thinks, but I quite like it.  We collect random religious icons, but if the boss says no, then it's out to the scrap pile with this one. |

Just found a "men at work" the triangular one with man and umbrella, while walking to the shed, and youngest son took a fancy to it, so was rescued from the hedge, given a wash and screwed to the wall

Last night I went over to a complete strangers place to put 18 lengths of American white oak through his thickneser planer to use in the trucks bed. See my truck build thread. Anyway, on the way there, I clocked a piece of kids furniture that had been discarded.... Some of you may know that we have three rescue cats that allow us to live in their house. Anyway, they love various beds around the house, so on the way back I stopped and picked this little couch up off the pavement, where someone had obviously dumped a pile of rubbish. This morning Nicola cleaned it all up and fitted a sheepskin cover over the seat, which actually comes off to leave a small storage space underneath it. The cats have a few of these sheepskin covers around the house. The pics below show Dukey the dumb ginger discovering it, then Harley my Garage Thug intimidating him off it and taking it for herself...... what Nicola failed to get a pic of was Dukey walking away in disgust, hitting the scratch post hard and then coming back in that typical sideways bounce cats sometimes do, and biting Harley in the thigh and scarpering away. Nicola said it was hysterically funny, as he is a real softie.   AAAAALLLLL MINE !!! Perfect place for a garage cat.  Later in the day, Tabitha also tested it and approved. |

Cats are probably on par with my love for all things old and retro have a couple of strays which visit on a daily basis to be fed old looking jet black chap which I have named Oscar - for no good reason, but seems to know Oscar means bloke has food for him! and noisy cat, who has the highest pitched meow I have ever heard  |

I guess this does not strictly fall into this thread, but I also know that Terry would quite happily burn it on his bonfire, as he has done with many caravans before. The thing I got today was a 2 berth caravan that had been used for some months as a large dog kennel. I gutted the curtains, floor mats and all the mattresses before I even towed it home behind Nicola's car (which was today exchanged after failing its MOT ) I had been looking for a small shed to put up around the back at the garage, in which I could store all the parts of the Chevy as I stripped it, when the idea struck me, as I knew the local pub landlord had a 2 berth caravan to sell for £50.00 as well as another large one for £50.00 too. Before I went down there, I called him and offered £40.00 which he accepted. This is what I fetched........ 7 foot wide, body 13 foot long.  Back home I started to remove all the stuff inside, which includes a full awning, port-a-loo, water roll, cutlery, glasses, pans, and some other random stuff, including a spare wheel. Also found 17p. Tomorrow I will vacuum clean it on the inside, then take my pressure cleaner to the inside too and wash the inside down, after which it needs to dry out, while I wash down the outsides. Then park it around back, and start packing truck stuff from the garage into it. Landed.  With some of the treasures. Despite being terribly grubby, (made me gag in revulsion) it has a small toilet onboard and has potential to be restored to use once it has served its purpose as a spares shed.  The caravan/shed has been baptized by a South African friend as "THE KENNEL" and even if it becomes a camping caravan later, it will be known as The Kennel. As usual I already have the next two incarnations in mind. Once the truck is completed, the plan today is to have Nicola turn the inside into a cool little weekend away space. The exterior may well end up in some mad NASCAR livery........ Think Sinclair Oil Corporation, or other similar with Red as a major component. I like the idea of having a Dinosaur on the rear, with its head poking around to the side of the door. Today I spent about 5 hours washing the interior surfaces, undersides, topsides etc by hand with a rag and loads of Cillit Bang! About 6 buckets of water etc. I also cleaned the Porta Potty and other items that were in it when I got it. The awning and poles were wiped down and packed away under the mattress-less bunks. The caravan was really only good for a bonfire, and to be honest, anyone who kept his dog in that thing deserved to be punched in the face. After the interior, I spent a few more hours with a pressure cleaner, getting the roof, sides etc cleaned up.  Imagine a Dinosaur looking around the corner.  After that I parked it up outside the garage in front of the woodwork shed.  Spent a few hours today dismantling the interior, masking up window frames, cabinets etc and then proceeded to paint the first coat of Magnolia. This is what the interior loooked like after my marathon cleaning session yesterday  Next coat will probably go on at 05.00 tomorrow. Then I will try to leave it alone. |

Most of you know my neighbour Mickey. He is 69 now and gave up his Mercedes Sprinter vn with intergalactic mileage at the end of last year after the engine blew up. He has not stopped working though, as his head does not work that way. He now works at a scrap dealer/recyclers yard, doing everything from cutting to moving and weighing. Last week he came home excited that he had something come in which just had my name on it. In the pat he would have just come by and dropped the items below, at my house. So this morning at 06.00 we were standing chatting over the hedge as we often do early mornings when he showed me the pics. Later today he saw me and said that the yard would let me have the chassis for £15.00 Gotta be worth it. Of course this raises the question....... What to do with it??    This is the original with wheel barrow wheels.  He also had a pic of this little wagon, he reckons its worth a fair whack, but offered it to me for £35.00 I offered it to mate Martin to move his parts around with and then when he is done with it, it will be coming back to me to be turned into a rather large "Radio Flyer" tug-along with solid sides and painted red. Nicola has laid claim to it, for towing her chocolate around in, said you can never be too prepared.  Maybe not as big as this though.   |

I have just seen to price of a new dino cars cycle, £1700! looks like a bargain, if you can restore, modify, or create something fun out of it!

Perfect size for a Tot Rod. Will be buying both and creating a Radio Flyer once Martin is done using the trolley for his cab. |
