Woken by Nicola this morning, as she found these two fire hose reels at the front door and could not move them. Deposited by her brother for me to use as I see fit, they were meant to go onto a boat, but the capacity is too small, as the boats use 2 1/2 inch hose and equipment. Been in their skip pile a few years now. Anyone else need some hose, or even a whole reel ? Drop me a PM please. I will use about 6-7 meters only in the petrol pump build. Wondering what else I can do with the rest of the hose, not sure if I should run some down the side of the property down to the garage to have permanent water down there. Sure some idea will spring to mind.

Brilliant work, I wish our tip was as openminded as yours. And great to see her face with the cross! Hi Mate, thank you ! Our tip is not at all openminded, indeed, the guys there are mostly unfriendly and incorruptible. But I know that if something is mid-air and not in the skips...... it is mine if the dumper can be convinced to put it in my car. I always have my stuff that is being dumped ready, but also have the side of the car, nearest the walk in skips clear..... and the door unlocked. So when I drive in, slowly, I scan the walk in skips and if I see something I need to lift, I check if there is a worker, if not..... I get out, grap it, shove it in the car and then unload my stuff. Not always successful, as is asking, which can work, but worth giving a go. My eyes are always open for stuff people throw out. I have previously seen a 6 foot Halfords trailer in the large metal skip ? WHY ? No idea, but it was at a skip with CCTV so even if they said yes, they could not let me have it. You just need to be creative and keep your eyes open.

Received this in the post today from Ian, (BIAS on Retro-Rides) after he had to go fetch it back from his skip bin. The old grille from his 1992 Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign project car and daily driver. Thanks mate. Plan is to tap out the dents in it, get some diamond mesh in stainless or steel, paint it satin black and fit in the holes like a Bentley grille. The plan..... Ian's car. I love the look of this car.

Not complete. BUT...... after adding a head and tailstock centre, as well as a tool rest clamp, I will have a lathe very similar to the one I learned on years ago. Not a Tip Treasure of mine, but a great product. Made by Trevor who I got the metal lathe for. In his workshop.

I thought I was cheapskate for having a bench made of five pallets stacked up, though mine isn't on wheels. And it's grown, into two piles of five pallets for a bit of extra capacity. Thing is, it's a very solid bench as long as all the feet (don't know the proper term) line up, so now I like it. I did find an old wooden tea trolley on a local dump which I've used for my mobile tool trolley, but now I have to keep it clean as the local "Antique and Craft Centre" have the identical item on display with a little label saying £28. Oh well.

I am never sure if I should apologize for the stuff I dig out or tell you guys about the silly grin it puts on my face.
Pulled this out of a skip a few months ago. No other parts, so no pull string or safety cover etc.
Today I had some time to clean up the garage and thought I would see if a trick I saw about 25 years ago when my cousin used to start his lawnmower that was missing its pull cord, with a socket and a power drill.
Found the right size bolt, ground it roughly triangular so it would not slip in the chuck, and did exactly what you see in the video clip below.
BOOOOM !!!!
Now playing around with the idea of seeing if I can find a free BMX bike to attach it to.
Not sure if it really has the power to pull anything but a 6 week old monkey about, but should be more noisy than cardboard in the spokes (remember that??)
Video link below.
Next up..... Chainsaw bike??
Going back to the garage to finish the guitar floor lamp now.

That's ace Grizz, but it gives me an idea for building a small mp3/stereo into one, with LEDs in the neck as a graphic eq!
Oh, drop me a pm to remind me, I think I've turned up something here that Mrs Grizz will like!

Just spent an enjoyable hour and a bit reading through your thread Grizz, top work mate, to echo what everyone else has said, I wish my tip was like yours. The laptop I'm typing this on right now actually came from there, luckily I asked the owner about it before he lobbed it in...
"Whats up with that laptop pal?" "It's a bit old, and it won't hold a battery charge, plus there's a crack in the casing" "Works besides that yeah?" "Oh aye, yeah" "Chuck it here mate!" "Hang on, I'll get the charger..."
Tried to offer him a tenner, then a fiver, eventually he settled for a Marlboro and my paper that I'd already read. Glued the crack in the casing, keep it plugged in, still working well 3 years on!

Now that sounds like perfect deal. I have not been to our tip for possibly more than a year as they have video surveilance up but still "dumpster dive" when possible. The trick with the tip is to sit for a moment and look whats there and to have your car ready to load in fast. Fortunately my wife understands and often claims stuff I bring home. She has also scored big before. Chairs that we still have, a brand nee cat scratching post she costed at near £100........ Why do people spend money just to throw it out abd claim poverty.

I don't understand it myself, I think it's a cultural thing, everything is throwaway and disposable. Not to mention the fact that the majority these days won't have a go at anything new or difficult, like fixing stuff. I work in an office full of blokes that pay people to change their oil...

Were limited to the amount of times we can go to the tip now up here in Leeds, you have to register and can only go 12 times a year. I have had the odd wheels out of the tyre container but that's about it, was once told by an employee a couple of years ago that if you want anything speak to someone and say your having a clear out at home and the wife brought a couple of bits she shouldn't have, sometimes works sometimes doesn't.

Bryan First I've heard of that, but I'm guessing it came in at the same time as the fortnightly bin collections? Anyway, I'm nipping down to Kirkstall tip today with a load of garden cuttings so I'll let you know what they say. And also whether I find anything worth saving

The laptop i'm using now i got out of a skip ...... ok the 'F7' key is missing, and the battery occasionally falls out, but apart from that its ok. Got a charger for it off the bay of E for a tenner.
Only real issue with it was it's previous owner was a young girl, and it still had all her details and photo's on ...... they got deleted off pretty rapid.
I don't complain about people chucking stuff away, if they didn't skip em, i'd never got hold of stuff!!!

Mostly scrap and offcuts. Thought I would add this in because I was pleased with the result. Nicola's mum passed away early in January. She was always a keen gardener and over the years also rescued many animals. She had a small statue of St Francis of Asisi in the garden and when she died, it came home with us. I had walked around with the idea of making a small shelter for him to stand in, in the garden. This morning I popped down to the local pub who always has a pile of wood from fencing jobs waiting for the next bonfire. So I fetched a few old weathered feather boards. I also grabbed some 12mm ply from the garage and cot some to shape, making it up as I went along. Knocked up a nice AA road patrol house for St Francis. Also cut out a Cross on the bandsaw to fit inside the shelter. Once completed I posted him out on a bit of railway sleeper in the garden so he can keep an eye on everything. Nicola was happy.... she also cooked me dinner.

Last night Mickey came knocking, he had been on a job yesterday and there was a load of offcuts of angle iron. He knew I would use it given half a chance. Length varies between 150mm and 1200mm While I was at the pub, I found a bunch of tools on the fire pile .... WHY ? I really do not get people wasting like this. Brought these bits back and added to my tools. On a completely different track... went to Whitstable yesterday to pick up an Argon/CO2 bottle that want to try get filled for when I start welding the truck. We always do the high street charity shops. I found this old skool coffee percolator. Nicola went to get some good quality coffee today and we tested it out.... very good.
