The airleak on stock Lada carbs is usually spoted on mounting base, even what the gasket is OK. The mounting base can be crooked so check it. Base is thin and needs to be screwed gently. If the carb looks that was taken off many times and installed again, it's recomended to chack the base. The fastest way to find the airleak is to spray some aerosol on the connecting parts till the engine runs.

^^ Thank you. That is very helpful. I have been looking in the wrong place for air leaks. I will fit new gaskets today.

Right - previous issues are sorted, but a new one has just developed. I was on a long journey, 350m round trip. I was going along the motorway fine, but when I came of the final sliproad and joined a minor road, suddenly the car was hiccuping when I tried to accelerate. I dipped the clutch and the idle was fine, and the car will accelerat when the throttle is completely pressed. What has happened? To put a bit of background to it - I have filled the tank 10 miles previous. When I pulled away from the junction at the bottom of the sliproad, I accelerated quite quickly.
Any thoughts?

could be dodgy petrol but given previous problems I would suspect summat else Sounds like a carb clean would be in order or try redex in the fuel?

What sort of carb are you running?

Hmm - mid range problems only, with idle and full power OK. Maybe a partially blocked main jet or a blocked emulsion tube progression hole?

Fixed it. Dismantled carb, got the meths out and set to work. An hour and a half later, I was out for a drive and experiencing more power than ever!

Good stuff - it's always nice when things go according to plan.
Do you have an in-line fuel filter on this? If not then it might be worth fitting one, especialyl if you have picked up a dirty batch of fuel.

Let the mouse out?
Could be bearings. Does the sound go away if you warm it up?

Stick a bit of rubber pipe in your earhole and wave the other end round the engine. Makes it easier to pinpoint where noises like that are coming from. A high pitched squeal echoes off everything and can be hard to source.
