Well done, you have done a cracking job.
The only thing I would recommend you do is to fit the twin stromberg manifold and carbs?
It will make the engine run smoother and perform better, It will make it more fun/easier to drive as well.

Thanks folks, I do all my own work but this is the first time I've done the bottom end of a car so it was all unfamiliar stuff. (nearest I've done in the past is 1960s-80s bikes engines, and I stripped a Ford X-flow block for scrap more than 30 years ago) peteh1969 many thanks for the suggestions during the build, it's appreciated. Not sure I would have managed without advice from the local engineer so *big* thanks to him, I now know the motor had never been apart before and is still on standard bores / crank sizes ! Everything was done on a tight budget. The descision was made a lot easier when I found somebody charging about the same for a set of new Std pistons (£78) as others were asking just for new piston rings ! It's a shame the Std crank bearings cost twice as much as oversized bearings - but it was still a much cheaper option than getting the crank reground. The oil pump was stripped and found to be still in tolerance so it just got put back together (£ free) The parts total was £200 not the expected £500/£700+ I had feared, bores just got honed so no need for an expensive rebore or crank grind.

Last week was a bit hectic so the plan was to rebuild the bottom end and just refit the head, then test everything worked. The obvious way to test it was to jump straight into some light tat-hauling duties, it coped fine Prompted by a helpful comment last week along the lines of "It seems a shame to do all this and not do ....", a spare head got some TLC today so it could be swapped onto the rebuilt bottom end As I'm busy clearing house ready to move later this month, I recently gave away a wooden workbench that has been in my family since at least the 1950s This week I was doing work where it now lives and got to use it as a workbench for the first time ever. I'm happy it's gone to a good home, just can't believe I never used it for anything but storage when I owned it The spare head was removed from a working motor a few years ago, I thought it just needed checking over. When I started I decided to invest in some 1-piece valve springs to replace the 2-piece springs I found when I stripped the valves Tip : different exhaust manifolds need different length exhaust studs fitted in the head (the studs in the new head were too short for the manifold, I had to fit longer studs before I could refit the exhaust The refreshed spare head has now been fitted and taken for a spin around the block. Result = It's strange driving a car I'm very familiar with but it now accelerates, pulls well up hills without needing to change down a gear, has no misfires / rough running, and is very quiet. Good oil pressure is a given Shameless plug for anyone who has read this far - I'm moving house (and loosing my storage) at the end of this month, loads of Retro goodies for sale forum.retro-rides.org/thread/202604/major-sale-hunter-storage-housemove

Seller greenwood_auto_uk on Eb@y, good prices on some sizes of crank bearings & pistons. They also have 1 new unused 1725 engine for sale Wish I could justify buying it and just have it in the lounge. The 1725 was the first engine I really worked on.

Thanks , the move went very smoothly Driving the rebuilt engine when fully loaded with tat prized possessions yesterday was such a pleasure, just point it at a hill in 3rd gear and it happily pulls up to the top without slowing. Proper old school pulling power

Good luck with the drive and the new house! Old school torque is just wonderful, as I've been relearning on long uphills with the Princess lately.

I'm now staying with friends in North Wales for a short holiday. The trip to here was fun : Alston still had lots of snow lying - first time I've sent snow for a few weeks. Decent b&b at Victoria inn on the main street, Phone: +44 (0)1498 381194. Penrith was OK for an overnight stop, shame the weekly Iive music is on Saturday's and I was there Friday. Oops. Landlord asked if I'd had the car from new - not sure how to take that! He did redeem himself when he pointed me to Brunswick yard, it's an area of small units selling interesting tat and salvage. Had a look at Windermere but too small and touristy so went a few miles further and ended up in Kendal. Highly recommended! Shame their live music is most nights apart from Saturday - and I was there on a Saturday! Locals gave me directions to a very nice real ale pub on the river bank - shame I can't remember the name. Weatherspoons did a nice curry tho'

My "holiday" in Wales isn't going according to plan (but there again - why bother making plans when past experience says they will soon get changed or ignored, hence my usual "plans are for other people" attitude ) A couple of days ago somebody stopped near us and put up a sign at the end of the carpark and drove off before we could ask who or what it was about. We walked over and found ... Lots of coffee breaks were taken for the rest of the day as we had a steady stream of nicely turned out motors passing by It turns out the back road we were on is part of this years course, and the junction right next to us is a great viewing point (the narrow-gauge railway signposted locally also sounds interesting )

Quick update : I left Wales last month and had a trip to Tyneside before flying to Denmark for a couple of weeks. Wales was hot & sunny, Denmark was too hot and too sunny. The photo below isn't Wales or Denmark I fitted a spare head yesterday to see if it fixes some odd running problems I've been having since a hose popped off and things got a bit warm. Things seem ok so we're now officially en-route to RRG (complete with tent, beers, tools, clothes, and a spare 12 ft staircase bannister "just in case" ) I'm expecting to be visiting South West (Bristol - Lands End etc) after RRG, so if anyone knows that area (where's good / where to avoid) feel free to PM me or have a chat at RRG !

greencarfritz - it was great to meet you at RRG, thanks for the advice about South West I'm now exploring around the area - especially liking the North Coast Woolacombe - plenty of waves so lots of surfing shops & folk. Ilfracombe - I spent the first evening exploring the lovely harbour. Next day I found the town also has a busy high street! Top (and cheap) accomodation at Ocean Backpackers ( independenthostels.co.uk ) Combe Martin - a quieter surfing village (& cave exploring tours by kayak). *Best* home cooked pasties for a long time from the local butcher ! Porlock - nothing special for me but the road from there to Minehead is FUN (steep, twisty, amazing views) Minehead - holiday coastal town, nice to see unusual stuff in independant shops View across the Bristol Channel ( "Sun, Sea, Sand and stuff" - I don't think so ) ps - does anyone have a welding set I can make use of, to fit a small patch before MOT time?

Projects/Classics: 1974 MGB GT (it's best not to talk about this one), 1972 Austin 1100 (The Purple Peril that has consumed a lot of fresh metal, welding gas and wire so far) Daily drivers: 2010 Audi A4 (my wife seems to have taken ownership of this), 2008 Audi TT (I hate them, supposed to have been a stop gap but currently stuck with it), Specialized Allez (cycling to work allows me to eat loads of cake)
