well i managed to get the head off today..... it had an ominous start when i saw this that's metal filings in the intake manifold undeterred (well, i'd just spent £6 on a splined bit!) i removed the head anyway and found.... that last pic - isn't there meant to be a piston attatched to that.... thing. isn't that the con rod? is that the piston welded around the edge of the bore? aah well. i've been offered a free engine for it so nuts to it..... at least i didn't go to the hassle of putting a head on to find out there was something else wrong! that much is pretty evident

from what i can tell, the valves were slapping the pistons slightly (there's indents on all three remaining pictures from one set of valves, but they're old ones with carbon on top) which was the noise when i picked it up.... hence the power loss, then it gave way bigtime. nothing lost really, if anything it's good to be getting a whole new engine rather than patch it together and still have chunks missing from all the pistons. anyone know how to get the engine out of a polo? anyone near nottingham got a hoist?

Thats a cracker mate! Congratulations for doing it properly I wonder why the valves were hitting the pistons then? Mabe its had the head skimmed, and it bought the valves within clipping distance? J

the timing had been thrown out when the waterpump failed.... it had had a new waterpump in but not the timing reset. since it started and ran, i thought it'd drive far enough to get it home.
it didn't.
my fault really, had i prepared myself properly and towed it home it wouldn't have ended up like that, but i suspect it would have still needed a new head and possibly pistons too.

i'm going to make some furniture and trinkets, scrapingscrap-style
1. Camshaft hatstand (suitable for midgets only) 2. Pair of Valve Head Cufflinks 3. Cylinder head doorstop 4. Intake manifold harmonica (only one note - suitable for fairytale giants) 5. Timing belt bandana 5. Block flower planter.
MrB: JB weld? Hmmmm.... guess i could totally block off that one cylinder, make a corsa-stylee three-pot engine. already makes the same noises as my mother-in-laws nasty 3 cyl 1 litre jobbie.
