Here's a little dilemma to spice up your afternoon... My Crusty Old Truck of War tm is a 1968 SIIA Land Rover.... However it wears a 1977 registration number. Should I get onto the DVLA and get them to provide me with a number more in keeping with the vehicle's age (e.g. an 'F' suffix).... this would make it instantly clear what the vehicle is, rather than people looking at it a bit funny, as in, that's not quite right... OR Do I leave it as is? Legend has it (these trucks don't have service histories, they have folklore passed from owner to owner!) that the truck was originally shipped to Australia when new by a UK company, and that it was shipped back to blighty in 1977 when it was (wrongly?) registered as a 'new' vehicle on the R suffix ..... It's almost a shame to strip it of the number it's worn for 29 years and it obviously hints at a bit of history. It's alos a good conversation point for chats with wierdo-beardy crusty-truck-o-philes... but I do loves them black & silver plates... Here's some pics of the owd girl for illustration

Its a toughy, i like the idea that a number sticks with a car, you still get fee tax i imagine too. as its old though can you not still have black plates based on its age not its Reg Letter?

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

That bumper is coming off at the weekend. I've got an unpainted one to go on.
The whole thing used to be painted pink, and has been rather hastily covered up with what appears to be Lincoln Green dulux.
The V5 also states the colour as 'bronze'... yet I can find no evidence of it ever having been bronze!! The paint on the inside is Land Rover green, and the pick-up bed is variously black, blue and unpainted on the inside.....

Surely if it's built pre-73 then you can still have the black and silver plates, even if you keep it on the R-plate?
I think years ago when a car came in it got whatever letter was being used at the time, so it getting the R-plate was correct back then, before they changed it to the age-related plate or Q-plate system.
Sure the funny looks aren't due to the bumpers?

The historic vehicle status is based on the date the vehicle was built, so quite rightly yours is free. In addtition, the dvla say that.... Construction date, not registration date. You must already have the relevant letter from some authority (manufacturers, owners club etc) in order to have been granted historic vehicle status, so the same will allow you to display an R plate, on black and silvers, with pride! my advice is to print out the relevant DVLA page, keep it in the glovebox (or grenade holder, or whatever it is those have) and try to keep the smug look to a minimum when you get pulled for 'those wrong plates, sonnyboy'

Coolio! I reckon it's time to get some pressed tin black & silvers ordered! I will have to put some paint stripper on them, file them down, bury them in the garden for a month etc. to ensure a bit of 'patina'

pogweasel in da house: bury them in the garden for a month etc. to ensure a bit of 'patina'
If they are aluminium put them out back and go out and pee on them atleast once a day and the uric acid will give them a nice oxidised look in a couple of weeks, sounds disgusting but works ohhh so well. Stripped the clear coat of a set of old Ansen Slot Mags late last fall and since then I have left them out back and taken a leak on them every now and then and now they start to look like something out of the 70's and never polished since.....
DP says: Make sure you clean the plates well with Yes or other detergent before handling them....

I'm sure it would only take a few off roading sessions to have them looking suitable worn.

penski in da house: DP in 'wazz on yer rims!' shocker!
Got some help from Vovven, the dog who obviously like the smell of wee on Ansen alu, good taste but it hits me that where ever I park the car with those rims on every dog in the neighborhood will lift their leg agains it, hopefully some time dipped in water & Yes will cure that problem.....

pogweasel :
'Bronze' as colour on V5 means 'BRONZE GREEN'
It's the classic dark green that many Landrovers of the 60'S and 70's were turned out in.

I thought that may have been the case.
It is slightly misleading though!
I can't decide whether to (a) keep it lincoln green (b) go back to bronze green (c) paint the wheels red, the body satin black and add chequered fablon to the roof & bed FTW!
