same thing has happened to me before, I seem to have had an issue on one of my cars where condensation built up in the drum, which would occasionally mean they seized in place. My brakes were well maintained. eventually one of the linings just parted company from metal backing. I think my shoes were either ferodo or pagid ones

I've had the same with an escort Mk 6 a couple of years ago, friction material was rattling about in the bottom of the drum when i took it off. I also had a 306 GTI6 where the front pads were coming away from the backing plates, scary.

This is disturbingly common on clios, 106s and saxos (which all share the same rear brakes)
I've had it happen on 2 of my cars, and seen it on another two.
The bearings sometimes pull apart when you take the drum off (they bind onto the stub axle) you can probably just clean it and put it back together. Run some emery cloth over the stub axle and grease it so it slides back on nicely.

If anyone else here reads practical classics there is a warning on page 1 of this months issue warning of counterfiet brake shoes and pads that break up and delaminate under normal braking conditions. The scary thing is that they can be good inpersonations of respected brands and some motorfactors and places on have been selling them without realising they have them. This was mentioned on another forum I frequent in more detail than the PC warning. Scary stuff really

Seen the broken shoe thing allot with dirt bikes over the years and would put it down to moisture inside the drum. Had it happen to pads too put never on a car always on dirt bikes. Taper bearings come in one or 2 piece don't know what type these run but if it feels good still slap on the grease and refit Nice pics

had a pad disintegrate when sharply braking for a roundabout a few years ago. much pedal pumping ensued. brown trousers that day on inspection all of the front pads ,although fairly unworn, were delaminating and could be prized off with a screwdriver

Your right there copey! Ive replaced all the shoes now but the handbrake mechanism is ridiculous on these things and seems to make no sense! Back on it tonight after Ive pressed the bearings into the drums (what a stupid design!!! To get to the handbrake mechanism you have to buy new 30mm nylock nuts and try not to split the bearings when you take the drum off - curse word. Give me an old ford any day!
