MkIV Zodiac. Always a bit of an also ran, after the earlier cars, the styling of these was (IMHO) spoiled by a couple of things - tiny little wheels (and matching tiny little wheel arches), the rear axle being so far back on the car and the long greenhouse. Not much to be done about the wheelbase (unless you're feeling really keen), but once you open up the arches and get some decent size wheels and tyres on the car, it starts to look a lot better. Took and inch or so out of the roof, raked the rear window and two doored it. Side glass might be a PITA if it's curved. I realised the wheels are a little too big for reality on the above pic, they're more like a 17", but you do what you gotta do! Also managed to create quite a pleasing full fastback (with actual 17" wheels this time) though actually, the design of the front and rear isn't really in keeping with a muscle car. It's rather more 'Brougham' than anything else so maybe the regular two doored version would be better. I can see that in gold, with a brown vinyl top!

Oh Bristol....if only you hadn't been so dull....if you'd only gone to the Italians for some styling help. But I suppose that was never what the customers were after with these cars. They'd have dismissed this as far too "flash". A long time ago when I was even more stupid than I am now I had one of these - pure impulse buy - if I still had it now I would be commissioning this very rebody now. Absolutely love it... P.

I keep looking at these too. Well anything from a 407 to a 411 would suit me, but they're all out of my budget as yet. I spent some time chatting to a guy at a show with one that he'd bought as a bit of a wreck and fixed up, as i was interested to find out what they were actually like to own. My mind is always saying 'yeah you could add efi and a newer motor and a six speed manual and better rubber and...and...and...' but it sort of misses the point of the car I suppose. Also the fact that they're ally, as cool as it is, makes doing heavy body mods extra difficult. I started looking at Alvis TD21s after that, as they're at least steel AFAIK. Doesn't have the V8 burble though. One day.

Mine was a 410(?) with the Chrysler v8 and bought because I read an article that they were the ultimate motorway cruiser due to the airplane design. Was doing loads of miles and had a company Petrol card - ah the 90’s - so purchased the first one I saw. It was definitely effortless on the motorway but the fuel bill was a little more than the company accountants would stomach so it went after 4months. ShOuld have kept it but, as above, was stupid. Lovely old thing. P.

Yeah I was thinking that there's probably some American car that looks exactly like this already! It's more fun doing stuff to overlooked cars somehow. Fixing up the kind of stuff that gets called ugly.

I did something similar in the 90's company fuel reimbursement was based on engine capacity so I went out and bought a V12 XJS, again superbly comfortable for long journeys, it was one of the first HE's and could do low 20's on a long journey too, even had cruise control.

It's sometimes more interesting to try and fix the ugly duckling type cars, so here (with no offence intended to any Landcrab owners) is an Austin 1800 as a coupe. This is the sort of thing Peugeot were good at, splashing nice coupes and convertibles off their base model cars. So with that in mind, I didn't change the wheelbase of any other architecture, aside from losing a couple of the doors and messing with the roof line, which is now more curved. The front and rear glass is stock, but laid down. Still probably not what you'd call 'stunning'.

I think there might be more to be done with this one. I might go back to it at some point.

I can't stress enough how much I think this looks like it could have been designed by the factory exactly like this and would have been an absolute winner, up there with Mustangs and the like. Such a good looking shape!

Hillman Hunter. These never get any love, despite cars like the Mk2 Cortina being worth a stack now.

Chopped Sunbeam Rapier, as a lowrider, though it'd work just as well as some kind of muscle car....

Owning one of these now I'm thinking they might suit turning into an estate better!
If only I had a photoshop licence.

Nice clean car. i saw a pic of a Crayford 3 Litre coachbuilt estate, and then found these - a Crayford 1800 and a factory prototype...

Kind of goofing around here, but I think it works. Austin 1100 estate - raked the screen, chopped the top and extended the front and rear wings to make a mini-Nomad.
