yay after almost oversleeping, two hours on public transport, and four hours back on a low-loader, my new ride is home! 1993 Polo Coupe, in silver, with "minor faults" knew it had a top end noise before going down but didn't seem too down on power, just a bit noisy so the plan was hope it's just tappets or a slight timing problem and to drive it back the 70-odd miles home. Our survey said - uh uhhh! 5 miles into the journey something seriously gave way, and now it feels like there's zero compression across all cylinders - the engine turns, but almost feels as though there's nothing happening inside. weird! anyway - it got home one way or the other, so i shall take it apart tomorrow and see whats happening. I was thinking of fixing it up to sell but it's such a nice tidy car with good history - i might whap and Eaton on there instead

Sounds like timing belt/chain snapped from your description.

yeah i know it's worthless without pics, but it's hailing like mad outside and getting dark too. tomorrow - possibly in bits timing belt is fine! whapped the cover off the side of the engine (it is just the one under the plastic cover, isn't it? goes cam-crank-waterpump?) and it's tight enough (can get a bit of twist on it), all teeth present and correct... that was my first thought though.

Yeah sounds like the hall sender on the dizzy. When it died, did it judder alot?
What engine is it? 1.0l?
If so, I have a full 1.0l engine here, its been put through its paces with NOS etc down the intake, but it still works. Your welcome to the whole engine and everything with it if you want it.
For an eaton, the easiest way would be to get a g40 block, use the head you got, get an eaton conversion kit, pick up g40 loom, fuel pumps etc, and away you go. Otherwise it wont last 5 minutes. If its a 1.0l, not really worth it anyway.

right had rocker cover off, can't see anything majorly wrong, cam is definately still in one piece haven't yet got the splined tool to get the head off though, job for next week methinks! just wondering if the timing being a LOOOONG way out could do this? i.e. valves opening on the compression stroke? i turned it over (prolly shouldn't have) whilst the rocker cover was off, and there was a load of possibly fuel vapour, might have been smoke, from under the cam. i had the hall effect sensor go on my G40 and it was a very different stopping - that just cut out and died, this sort of went CRUNK GRAAAAK PTWANG EEEEEEEEP and stopped. now when trying to start it, it almost sounds like it's just the starter motor turning, there's no effort from the engine itself. the engine is spinning over though. PhilJ... might take you up on that although i'd prefer to keep it as a 1.3 if possible you got any idea how much you want for it?

Sounds like a valve met a piston and the cambelts' stripped or jumped some teeth.

is this tashas polo mate? the old water pump was hugely curse word, which failed to keep tension on the cambelt - so you imagine what happened. well, thats what i had deduced from it before after i stuck a new water pump in it.

yeah keefy it's the olop.... it sort of drove (btw i think tasha wants a word with you about it not being aircooled! ) and was running lumpy, but driving, then it made the noises described above. it was as i was getting a runup to go up a hill. worst case it's a new head and i can't think of an easier car to do my first head swap on.... hoping the valves didn't meet the pistons though. are they 'interference' or if the cambelt slips will it just make the valves wave about harmlessly? there's no mashing noises when the engine turns over......

As others have said, I'd set the timing up correctly first (waterpump is used as cambelt tensioner on these as mentioned) and then turn it over by hand with a spanner on the crank or whatever and listen for noises. You can stick a long scredriver or whatever down the sparkplug hole on cylinder no. 1 to find TDC if the marks from the pulleys are missing or suspect and go from there. It might just have had a slipped camblet leading to seriously ill adjusted timing between top and bottom end. Good luck with it!

go on then.... how do i use the timing marks? there's an arrow sticking out from the block below the camshaft pulley, and a cast dot with a painted white blob either side of it actually on the pulley. not looked at the lower pulley yet.

i'm not going to even think about turning the engine over till i've had the head off - i figure if something's smashed into the end of the sparkplug with enough force to mangle it all up, then it's not a happy engine someone on clubpolo has just offered a free 1.3 motor though so bonus! gotta love the internet, people are lovely

Yeah I was gonna say you can have that 1.0l lump for free. Best keep it a 1.3 though. Cant be too much wrong with the lump in there though

yeah with a plug like that then it probably dropped a valve. With a full 1.3 for free how can you lose??? And its worth supercharging a 1L, i promice J
