I've been offered an E30 by a mate for free Don't know much about it other than its a 320i on 17s and he has a 325i Sport bodykit to go with it. Its been sorned since Feb, and the MOT has run out. He needs it gone as he's selling his house, but he wants his plate off it. The deal is I put it back on the road and he transfers the plate. However, SWMBO has declared a "no more cars" type ban until we sort out our financial issues. Obviously since I am not allowed it I am picking it up tonight and hiding it at my parents house until I can get it fixed discretely Looking for moral support - am I doing the right thing? Its helping a mate so that must be good, right? Do other people have to hide cars? Will take pics when I pick it up! How it looked in Feb

Definitley the right thing to do. How can she not want a free car? Matt She's probably thinking about the fact that any bits and bobs it might need won't be free... if it's been SORN fince FEB though you might not need to do too much to it (unless he put it off of the road for a reason?). HOWEVER - yep - definitely the right thing to do

Porsche 924 - gone Citroen Saxo VTR - not very retro but I loved it - now gone... MK4 Golf GTi 1.8T - gone but hardly remembered... Mini Cooper S R53 - gone BMW 125d Coupe - gone (mostly sideways)
Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

;)Thank you thank you thank you. It's not just me then. I did this a few years ago with a ludicrously cheap car that needed minor repairs. Have been tempted to do it again recently. But when I discussed this with a friend (who isn't that into all things with wheels), he thought I was insane. I guess he knows what Mrs S can blow up like and he still doesn't get why I spend and do what I do on my old Nova. Strangely enough, it's with an E30 that I have been tempted to do this with as well. And a white one at that!! I'm not advising, but it really is nice to know that I am not the only person in the world to consider this. Be good to know how you get on.

I'd Definitely do it, although I know I'm lucky that I wouldn't have to hide it

A free car is a free car, do it! Sell the kit and the 17's use that money to get it MOT'd when the time is right

Well the wife has tried to say I can't have another old BMW but a green e28 520i can up and it was cheap, tax about to run out and if no one bought it it was going to get cubed. The shell was described as rot free so I took a chance went to take a look and bought it. The shell is rot free but needs the work that was described by the seller (quite alot but all DIYable). I got it home and while initally she was not happy about the idea when she saw it she said nice colour so as far as I am concerned I am in the clear.
So you are doing the right thing, she may even like it. If you don't fix it you can break it sell what you can and weight it in.

DO it!!!
I once owned 12 cars but only four were parked outside the house - The other half never new about the others - (luckily)
still its hard to argue with the price of a FREE car........
tell her you will pay for a facial or a KFC bargain bucket - girls like these things don't they?

Phase one complete! Now in hiding at parents. Rear arches a bit crusty, one wing rotten (replacement in car:-)), couple of patches needing welding, rear bumper needs sprayed (mate doing that next week for me:-)). Nothing major though- I'm well pleased! Need to source a spoiler to match the bodykit which he is also spraying to match! Hiding place!:

Good man. I have never turned down anything for free, and never had to hide anything - but for what it's worth I am in full agreement with you. And when it's MOTd you can roll up in it and say, look what I got for free She'll have no comeback then! Also, keep the finances in the black by selling those alloys to a corsa owner and getting some BBSs.

Style 5's won't fit they're 5 stud. I love the 17s personally. Get the stance right on those and it'll look wicked. Matt

My E30 costs me less than my wife's car costs her and she still thinks I spend too much on it.

Personally, if you have to lie about a car, it's not worth it. A free car that needs work is still a drain on your money and time, I'm sure that is what your other half is thinking. Good luck though, you can only make it look better than it is currently I reckon
