I got chatting to a fella down the road who builds and races stock cars. Really nice bloke. He used to do bangers too, but now leaves all the racing to his granddaughter.
Looks a lot of fun, bit too rough for me I think! So I'll stick to watching. ;D

I know nothing about banger racing, how many races do the cars last? There are some pretty nice paintjobs and some effort put into prep (thinking of the no. 278 nova and no. 24 corsa) but also some pretty battered cars which don't look like they'll race again!

I know nothing about banger racing, how many races do the cars last? There are some pretty nice paintjobs and some effort put into prep (thinking of the no. 278 nova and no. 24 corsa) but also some pretty battered cars which don't look like they'll race again! The Novas and Corsas are Rookie Rods, whereas the more battered ones are bangers. I got chatting to one of the drivers afterwards who said that a banger will usually last two or maybe three meets before you have to get another one and start again. It was interesting that every car was severely battered before the racing even started - it suggests that either they'd all seen action already or the owners go at them with a sledgehammer beforehand to make sure they're not a target for other drivers! (I'm only guessing...) Looks a lot of fun, bit too rough for me I think! So I'll stick to watching. ;D Tell me about it! The first race of the evening was Superstox - someone rolled over on the first corner of the first lap, several other cars piled into him and the race was red-flagged. Once they'd cleared it all up and restarted, there was only a couple of laps before it got red-flagged again! It's pretty hardcore. The Rookie Rods went a lot more smoothly - it's kind of a contact sport in the way that the BTCC is, for example, but it didn't seem like they were actively trying to hit each other. They were all going hell for leather, it was very close racing... it's amazing how fast a stripped out Nova will go!

Most of the bangers were things like mid-nineties Nissan Sunnys, Honda Civics, Fiat Puntos and Rover 200s. The Civics seemed to be the most competitive...

My dad used to do bangers/stox in the late 60's early 70's. I've been shown a few old photos of some of the cars they raced and the towcars they used, I'll have to ask nicely and see if I could scan and upload them

it's nice to see different cars FINALLY getting used as bangers rather than just granada's/cortina's Bangers at spedeworth (promotion of wimbo) are a nudge and spin rather than full contact, less prepperation goes into them and they must still be hooked up to the radiator. You're thinking of national bangers (full contact) where the granadas are still majorly used in the unlimited class (over 2litre) altho the vast majority of cars are mot failures and rotton as a pear and most drivers have had them sat in the yard for a good few years before they get round to racing them, were as the cortinas have been replaced by mondeos due to their immense strength but the cortinas come out at rwd only meets. Its nice to see some posts showing bangers in a positive light on this forum, because racers aren't bad people, their willing to help many others out and I think a few (no one in this thread) that slag off drivers for doing what they love are totally out of order and haven't attually been to a meeting and witnessed and appreciated the pure ammount off effort it goes into building a national banger. Can you tell i'm a bit of a big banger fan, opps haha .

I saved my ex rally school mk2 from a hotrod driver, he was kind of keen for someone to buy it off him, i think he was 50/50 about racing it as he knew it was a top car to race but he didn't want to knacker it.

Rover 200s! This thread is painful to watch. Sorry, have visions of R8s becoming as rare as Marinas...

What are the rules now around running fuel injection on a banger? do they still need to be carb fed to run? as i've noticed people selling custom manifold to run zetecs on webers, etc...

It seems to depend on the class. I go to Brandon (Coventry) occasionally and they're mostly running eoither 2 litre or street banger. The 2-litres are porpose built and usually Mondeos with custom fabricated water tanks in the back of the engine bay against the scuttle. These cars last a while.
Street banger is max 1600cc and the cars are pretty close to stock apart from the roll over frame and stripping out. Last time I went there was a guy racing a bright pink Mk1 MR2, though most of it's Civics, Over 200s, mk 5 Escorts and other such blandness.

In the limited contact form of bangers you can run what you like (multi point/single/carb) in the national class i think you're only allowed single point (not to sure, might just be for unlimiteds) but from what i've heard the rules will be changing for next year to allow multi point as well as dizzy guards which will dramatically increase the number of cars avilable. Some drivers still do convert to carb over fear of high pressure lines breaking and spraying fuel everywere (if your car was on fire it could be nasty)
