Hi All, I'm after a medium sized estate car to stick the dog in, preferably German (but doesn't have to be), preferably quick-ish, and definitely at least 15 years old so I can stick it on my multi vehicle classic insurance policy. Budget is up to about £3k, possibly a little more. Dog in question (only about 14 weeks old in this pic, he's grown quite a bit and will continue to do so!): I'm thinking an E36 328i touring - seem hard to find in '95 model year though ('96 onwards can't go on classic policy, '94 and earlier is an E30), and I already have an E30 (non touring) so don't really want another. Maybe an Audi S2 avant as they seem nicely specced and about the right size. What about a regular Audi 80 estate with a suitably large engine, perhaps a Merc W124, I don't know much about those? Does anyone have any recommendations, or experience of the cars mentioned above and what to look out for? Any thoughts appreciated. Ideally don't want anything too old as it'll be my daily driver a lot of the time, so perhaps 1990 - 1995 sort of thing, needs to have A/C too. Economy isn't too much of a worry but 25mpg + average would be nice, prefer RWD or 4WD too really. What should I get? Cheers Stu

Volvo 760 turbo or v6, or maybe Volvo 940 960 or v90 yeah, turbo volvo and turn the boost up. Or would you consider an E34 touring? cheap, plenty of space for a dog, and the big engined ones are not slow

Id go for a W124 Merc, go for a larger engine one as the small ones are nearly as bad on fuel and well slow. or a Volvo 940 Turbo, really miss mine .

Another vote for a W124. Ours is a 280TE, Pretty quick and not *that* thirsty. Built to last and enough space in the back for a double mattress! Only cost a smidge over 500 too. At the back....

My preference would be a W124 - E280 or E320 - watch for rust around the jacking points and the loom under the bonnet - if it's not been renewed it will do - they cook themselves.
Or a close second would be a late Volvo 960 straight six - just sold mine, tough old bus and surprisingly quick and good to drive with the multilink rear suspension.

I got a '95 B4 Passat wagon (turbo diesel, naturally) for just this purpose, two big dogs and first baby on the way so I needed to replace the 93 "cockroach" Corolla. Quite happy with my choice

I think both the BMW 3 series and the Audi 80 have an high sill/loading lip that could present problems? My vote goes for a Volvo 850 T5 mine was awesome although a bit thirsty but it was an auto with 221k!

And the prize for "Most Eye-Catching Post Title" goes to......... I was hoping it'd attract attention! Thanks for all the replies, some great ideas of cars that hadn't occured to me, and some positive responses about ones that had. I think a Volvo 760 or 960 is a bit big for my needs really, though I do like Volvo's. I used to have a V40, that was about the right size, but too new to go on my classic insurance and a bit underpowered (2.0L petrol). An 850 T5 is appealing, though I prefer RWD really - how thirsty are they? Presumably very... but also very quick...? Merc, Omega and Carlton are all definite possibilities, and I do like E34 tourings too so would consider one of those, though also a bit on the large side. I spotted this 540i V8 Touring on Pistonheads which looks lovely, though a long way away from me. Has anyone owned one of these and can comment on just how horrific on fuel they are? I'd have thought sub-20mpg average? www.pistonheads.com/sales/1969307.htmAny more ideas welcome

definite vote for a W124. I'll get some pics of mine up.
Boot is enormous, and has a built in load liner and dog guard. The dog guard is awesome, there are mounts for it to clip into behind the rear seats but if you fold the rear seats down there is another set behind the drivers seats.
Mine carts around a rottie/gsd x and a basset/beagle x with great ease! Plus theres the load liner ... great for collecting dog drool!!!
