Seriously, the guy must be mentally ill. For the sake of £170 he's crushing his classic?! I'm sure when he delivers the cubed car to the dealership they'll offer him £1000 for it as a deposit on a new Yaris, and the privilege of taking most of the depreciation in the as$ as well as a legacy of monthly payments.

Yes agreed pogweasel is unfortunately right. As I tried to explain to him with most manufacturers you cannot get genuine old parts from them, yet with Toyota you still suprisingly CAN; as I have found (and I believe with Datsun through NISSAN dealers ...if Spotted Laurel wants to verify ...because a friend has found with a C110 if part numbers are quoted dealership can still obtain parts, but again price is deciding factor ;D!), so fair play to Japanese manufacturers/dealers

What a tool!
How exactly is crushing HIS OWN CAR going to hurt the dealership? It's no loss to them, the only person who stands to lose anything is him - he'll lose his car AND all the money he's already put into it!

He should go down on his bended knees and give thanks that the parts for a 1977 Toyota are still available from a main dealer at any price. Good god, Peugeot no longer support the 605, and the youngest of them are only around 7 years old! Not economical to produce and store parts they say.
The TOC should take him outside and spank him, hard, while making him say sorry. Verdict, iron plated, seam welded ocean going monkey curse word!

i dunno - ford are always helpful, i always give them a ring for anything i need, the guys name who works in the parts dept is called darren ;D. ive ordered a load of new parts and they seem to hold quite a bit, ive even been on forums and found guys moaning about stuff and paying silly money for repro stuff, only for me to tell them that it can be gotten from ford for half the price - and its genuine! the rs2000 release arm is a good example - repro one £40 from burtons. genuine one £23 inc vat from fords

I should probably add that Volvo aren't bad that way either, as I was saying above, parts specific to older RWD models are often hard to find new for a decent price these days, owing to the length of time since production ended, but there are lots of bits for certain models that you can get new, partly because the 9 series was so much of a modernised 7 series that various components are nearly or exactly the same, and the 7 series itself used some 2 series components, because there was no need to change them when they were doing their job more than well in the 2 series, so it could be a lot worse for a Volvo owner. Still though, even a Volvo 7 series owner can't expect to get every little part brand new on the cheap, why that guy reckons the owner of a relatively obscure 70s Toyota should get priority from Toyota and have spares made easily availible to him rather than to millions of owners of new Toyotas under warranty is anyone's guess, in an ideal world maybe car companies would be able to build you any bit you asked them for and sell it at the same price as they did in the 70s, but in the real world it's hardly practical, more than likely the tooling to produce the balljoints he needs was worn out and scrapped years ago.

So his toyota is nearly 30 years old and it needs a pair of ball joints! Whoppie Sh*t knowing japanese stuff it's probably the first time these have needed changing since it was new and they'll probably last another 30 years again. I'd pay the money all day long for quality genuine parts over cheap tat any day, I bought a non-genuine steering idler arm for the Sapporo when I first got it, as that was all I could get and it lasted 3 days! no sh*t, the bush was made out of icing suger and it just fell to bits. When I was working for Mazda we had customers cars that were 12 years old and they still had the origional battery! but then you quote them for a genuine part and the customers crossed the road to halfords and bought a cheep ass one that probably lasted a couple of years max. You pay your money and get what you get IMO.

I've come across plenty of dealers that are like that, where if the car in question hasn't been production in the last 5 years you get blank stares and no help at all. Still not as bad as Halfords though, although that would take some beating. ;D Evidently the words "inititiative", "improvise" and " stop looking at the bloody computer and go in the back and check for your bloody self unless you fancy a walk back to the bloody job centre!" don't come up often in the training given to new sales assistants, because if whatever you ask for doesn't come up immediately on the computer then most of their sales assistants are totally stumped. ;D I once made the silly mistake of enquiring whether they done a few minor servicing items for Hillman Imps, perfectly expecting to be informed that they don't, but also thinking that perhaps they might have it under Rootes or Chrysler. Not only did I get looked at like I was speaking an obscure dialect of Hebrew when I asked him, but rather than give me a straightforward answer that they didn't stock the parts, the swine behind the counter went on to insist that I must just have the name of the car wrong and that if I got the correct one then he could find the part for me. I may be a raving lefty but I'm not that out of touch with reality. ;D

The guy scrapping his Totota claims to be an enthusiast. Utter bullSH!7!! I'm a Skoda enthusiast, and I wouldn't consider scrapping one of mine for anything, and certainly not just cos of a couple of suspension joints whatever the cost.

He claims to be an enthusiast, but in fact a litle reading between the lines reveals he is a full-on semi-pro 'turkey cocker'.

Obviously it didn't occur to him to try ebay? I've managed to pick up bits for my Minor that are unique to the early Series 11's without too much problem, and that's for a car over 50 years old!

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

he says he's sold it now, for 350 notes. Also he claims 'A ball joint is not worth more than £30 tops'. Cock basket.

The way I look at it is this....
The balljoints are £170...
To buy a new car with T&T and no massive faults is £300. Minimum. And whose not to say that the replacement will also be CRUD requiring grubby bits in a few months.
£170 to fix a car you know inside & out don't seem so steep now.

I'm glad he sold it - He doesn't deserve to own the thing. I hope the new owner picks up a pair of ball-joints off a Japanese auction site for twenty quid. Including postage. Foo.
