Canon 40D (around £300 - £350 sh) and then buy a Tamron 17-50 F2.8 non-VC (£200-£230 sh) and you will have a awesome setup. The 450D and 1000D are much more like plastic toys. They work fine (no noticeable difference in image quality between my 40d and 450d) but just feel rubbish to hold unless you have tiny girl hands. Also the 40D auto focus is much much more reliable than the 450D (my experience anyway) and the controls are much quicker to use. Only disadvantage of the 40D is CF cards are slightly more expensive and it is bigger and heavier which is a good thing normally but not so great for travelling/being subtle. www.talkphotography.co.uk is great for buying second hand stuff.

Thanks for that, if the photo quality is near identical that's awesome. I've got a 1000D with an IS lens set aside for me for about the equivalent of 330 pounds, with the option of a second brand new lens for 65 pounds. If all goes well I'll upgrade it in a year or 2 for something more impressive

Could anyone give me some advice? I'm looking to get my first dslr for my 30th next month
I'm torn between the Pentax K-r or the K-7
I'm confused really, on paper the cheaper K-r - £499 with 18-55 and 50-200 kit lenses actually seems better than the K-7 which is £679 with a 18-55 lens
The K-r has a plastic body whilst the K-7 is a magnesium bodied, fully sealed, prosumer affair. The K-7 does away with a lot of the scene type modes making me learn more about camera setup which is a good thing.
I can afford the K-7 at a push, but is it worth it?
Any help?

2002gimp ... Why Pentax? The great things about slrs is the ability to use a huge number of different lens', so why not buy a Canon/Nikon where the range of lens' available is so much larger and the second hand market is massively massively bigger. The last thing I bought was a Canon 100mm F2 for £230 which is a beauty of a lens but you just couldn't do that with the Pentax system for a simlar price. Obviously if your only going to buy 1 camera and stick your basic 2 lens' on it then thats less of a problem but it would suck if you started taking it more seriously.

To be honest its the only camera i've played with that had a proper shutter click, I know I shouldn't get hung up on that, but there's something real nice about a proper clunk when the shutter releases! (I'm currently using a professional SLR 35mm from the 70's)
I also believed Pentax hasn't changed its lens mount since 1975, so all older lenses fit?
Been looking at others, I reckon £600 is what I can afford, any ideas? I could get an EOS-500d with 18-55 and 70-300 for £599 or a Nikon D90, same price, but only one lens!
Its a minefield really, they all seem to have there pro's and cons with no clear winners in this price bracket!
I just know i'm not a fan of scene modes and the like, I want to learn how to use the camera...

What I wrote was just my humble opinion. You're right, Pentax hasn't changed their mount system, do you have some nice old lens'? I am a canon fan boy and can't see why you'd buy anything else. On thursday I picked up a mates Nikon D3100 and fired off a few shots and it felt fine other than being tiny. Then he mentioned he was looking for a wide angle lens for it so I suggested the awesome Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 but he pointed out the cheap Nikons don't have focusing motors so you use certain lens' .... er, wtf! Silly retarded Nikons!
Are you willing to buy second hand? As I pointed out above you could buy a good condition Canon 40D and Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 for £500-550. All of the cheap 70-300 lens I've used have been pretty poor. I bought my sister a Tamron 70-300 for £70 second hand and it does the job ok but its slow autofocus, smaller aperture and not that sharp. I use a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 that was £350 second hand and its much better. I'd get saving and buy something like that if you feel you need it in the future.
As you clearly know how much better a decent 'prosumer' camera feels compared to a entry level one like the 500D, I'd try and avoid them and forgo a longer lens for now. Stick to the k7, 40D, D90 etc.
Another option is a 30D which can be found for massive bargains these days. My sister got hers for £185 body only and £60 for a Canon 18-55mm IS lens. Its very similar to my 40D except the screen is rubbish and its 8mp, but thats plenty.

Cheers mate,
Some good info there! I'd like to buy a new one, just cause it's my birthday and I don't normally get to spend pennies like this!
I'm happy to stick with the one lens for the minute and buy a decent one later on. To be honest I tend to stick with my 50mm prime on the 35mm, though I have about 5 lens...
I guess its the D90, the K7 or the equivalant Canon (which is??) then, I imagine a lot of it comes down to feel, I best get myself to a shop!
