I'm going to take my Soarer off the road while I slowly fix it up, but I've been given a criteria from SWMBO as to what I may get to replace it. Her Brief : Sub £1000 Diesel. Must Work. Economical Mine. Must be interesting. 30mpg+ would be preferential. Has to be presentable, as I will be using it for my business. I'm really struggling to find any reasonable diesels in this range? I've tried to find BMW 525's, Mercs, Volvo's etc, but I can't seem to find any that aren't at the other end of the earth! (I'm in sheffield) I thought the W230 in the FS forum would be ideal, with 7 seats and all, but alas, it's a petrol. I've even tried pestering a dealership with a dusty old car at the back of the forecourt! Any suggestions guys?

crew cab transit, will do over 30mpg, has HUUUGE amount of space obviously, dead reliable and tough as nails.
Or i you really need an actual "car" car, a 405 1.9d (or prefarably td) estate, slow but lots of space and a tough engine
dunno about over ther but in Ireland you'd get a reasonable mondeo TD for similar money, dead simple too and never given me any big trouble when i've had them

Peugeot 306 D-Turbo or Meridian would be a good choice...

I was looking at the 306's, and no doubt they're a good car, they're just a bit....dull. A vauxsaab Vect5 might be interesting though...

you don't need a derv for 30mpg+ so why saddle yourself with the higher purchase cost, higher servicing bills and more expensive fuel??? a £300, 2 litre Efi twin cam sierra will do 40mpg on a run and easy 30mpg round town driven smoothly.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

B3/B4 passats are great motors for that
still look ok, can be got cheap enough (self whoring, will be selling one soon too)
the diesls go on for ever and my 1.8 petrol returns 40 + MPG fairly easily

The 1.9d and 1.9tdi engines are great too, friend of mine has two ventos for example, 286k and 191k and still going well.

Saab 9-3 2.2TiD are good as well, got a Y plater for £800 a few months back (and sold a W plate for £550) and average 45mpg, loads of torque, 125bhp and about £150 a year tax. Would like a 9-5 2.2 TiD estate but too dear at the moment.
