I've been to Area 52, not because of A52, but because of Retro rides, finding people of a similar nature and understanding, looking as a recent newbie (ish) to the forum and especially A52 I can see their side, having run and maintain another car forum i see the RR teams point..
taking time and looking at it balanced upon a fence knowing i coudl fall either way i see both points..
Tracktime, looking at the haynes track and now thinking about it, there are much better suited tracks out there, even airfield with shorts handling circuits that offer better laps, i've been round a few tracks and for me a full sized track is better.. I said yes to this event, not because of where it was or when it was, but because of the Area 52 people
Area 52 and what Bruce has there has pretty much grown into the south west division of RR, I reckon 99% of people who frequent A52 do so because of this very forum and I was only thinking the other day about how long it would be before A52 spin offs popped up all over the country, (we need to clone bruce for this to happen tho as most others wont/don't share his passion and open their doors for all to visit) I'm sure Bruce would be moreproud/pleased of other A52's rather than, hey thats my idea..
To sum up what I'm trying to say, its almost become a love hate situation, for me, A52 is what RR is about, its brought a lot of like minded individuals together that has formed their own bond, I'm still a relative newbie, and its one of the only places i HAVE EVER been that welcomes you within minutes, after a coupel of hours there you feel part of the furniture..
Reading comments above, it almost sounds like RR want A52 to have their own site/forum, organise their own their own things etc.. I'm hoping that isnt the case as Will Carter said above...
RR has produced A52, so rather than push it aside, embrace and try and get more A52 groups involved around the country.. Yes it is almost lieka club within a club, but Bruce and A52 have no boundaries and the doors are open to all, its up to the users of RR to visit A52 and take part, join in the fun and see how it goes!!
Anyway, back to the point!
why not have a RR/A52 track day - why not jump on the back of Retro Cars magazine too and do a full on combined track day at a well known track, I hear Casle Combe normally allow this, only snag with a track day is that its more of a Mon- Friday affair

I mentioned Westonzoyland at the unit a few weeks before the gathering when this idea first came about (which was actually a result of me mentioning that a few friend of mine had thought about renting the haynes track, or somewhere similar for testing our own projects. The haynes track was only considered in this instance because it's just down the road from me, and a motor sport team a good friend works for have used it to test their deep sanderson before. Ok I had the figures waaayy out, but that's where the idea actually came from.) Anyway, I genuinely think it would be worth considering if you wanted to run the single car, small track format that you're talking about. Ok it's not so professional as the haynes track, but this should lead to it being cheaper, and I know multiple drift days have been held there before successfully. A drift day last year at Westonzoyland. I really hope this hasn't created a rift between Area 52 and Retro Rides, I already have to tip toe around trying to remain friends with members of 2 rival mini clubs, and I hate the way I miss out on half of what happens in each club because of it. Lets please all hug and make up.

I don't want this to drag on and on and on, but I want to say a few points.
1) I spoke to Bruce last night. There are no hard feelings. 2) there is an offer to Bruce/A52 from me to help you guys get a track day together
And finally, someone above mentioned about other area52's appearing. I seem to remember someone wanted to do this shortly after A52 came about and Bruce was less than pleased, wanted them to have a totally different name, and protect his 'brand'. I guess he valued all his hard work too much to risk someone grabbing hold of his coat-tails and coming along for the ride. Not that I'm saying Bruce was doing that with us, but I want to point out his approach to them was not so dissimilar as our approach to this.
Anyway, that's the end of it from me, anything else that needs to be said I hope will be done between Bruce and I to try and get a track day sorted for you guys.

Keefy, Bruce didn't like that because the chap wanted to set it up as a business and charge for its use, which is completely the opposite to how A52 was set up i'm glad there's no hard feelings.

Hmm, can't help feel that the 'issues' here should have been resolved behind closed doors as I can't help but think that RR and A52 have suffered as a result. Hopefully only temporary. The points made about the 1 way relationship between RR and A52 doesn't quite stack as I think that RR and the gathering wouldn't be as epic as the are with out A52 (project X for example drew a massive amount of attention). But also from a personal note, A52 has brought me much more into the whole retro rides family. Last year I was unable to make the gathering as it falls around the time of many birthdays in my family (big family get together), this year after being involved with A52, I re-arranged dates (twice as I got the date wrong the 1st time ) to make sure I could be there. Anyway, back to trackdays. I;ve done Keeville in the past, and the way motorsport events run their track days is very good for novices. But they are during the week (mainly) and the viewing isn't great. Plus you'll only get a small discount if you get more than 10 booked in 1 go. Westonzoyland do allow sprints, but have banned the drift boys because of noise Llandow drift day is on a Thursday, and most cheap deals on 'proper' circuits will be mid week sadly. Lets hope something can be sorted soon that keeps everyone happy and we can all put this behind us.

I want to create an 'Area 52' style place at some point in the future but not in terms of using the Area 52 brand but the principle, immitation is a form of flattery The ethos and principle of Area 52 is one of unity, community, and friendship. And having a good old laugh with cars and other vehicles! Maybe next years Gathering will have another stand of a collective/crew like A52 i do hope so

Hmmmmm I got a text off Bruce about the prospect of an 'A52 event' at Haynes And now I read all this......! Can't help thinking that both sides have very valid points and I believe enough has been said and all need to move on! As for A52 being some sort of a 'franchise'...hmmmmm I think if I put the work into something as much as Bruce has I'd be giving it my own 'stamp' and identity and not wish to be seen as 'leeching' off Bruce's hard work in any way There is a guy who posts on RAT-LooK that has his unit that he calls his 'Dream Factory' in Oxfordshire...but he does charge for some of the work he does on others motors to fund his outgoings I agree that the ethos and principle of Area 52 is a good one, of unity, community, and friendship. And it would be great to see this sow the seeds of similar establishments popping up elsewhere across the country . . . . . with all of them cross pollenating here on RR.... SO all I need to do now is find some like minded individuals on RR who are in the merseyside area...and a CHEAP unit.... and think of an 'identity' ;D Jo0Lz

Blimey, a lot of stuff in this thread! I hope something can rise out of the ashes. A retro track event would be fun, although I wasn't sure if I could put my name down as have never been to Area 52 (would love to, but a bit of a trek).

curborough is sounding more and more likely from the comments Ive seen so far. I can see both sides in this thread, but it looks like a good outcome has come from it I hope the A52 trackday becomes a reality and a success I'm racking my brain at the moment to think of good places. Depends how far from Bristol you want to go? I know that theres a successful drift day at Buxton thats usually £10 a car, however it is a VERY unforgiving place if you get it wrong, plus its a fair trek I think. edit: looking at buxton, its just a figure 8 really so maybe not right.

Brands hatch Brands is great for me, I'll only use about £4 worth of fuel getting there even if I cane it Not so great for the forum as a whole though. Central has gotta be the way to go if an open to all track day happens, which of course it should. The track doings at RRG were the highlight for me (really wish I'd bothered to turf all the tut out the daily and given it a run, alas I'm lazy and couldn't be having with it and then covincing Ange that all would be well with what essentially is her car ;D) Anyway I think it would be great to have a forum track day where all can have a bash at circuit racing in the fine selection of cars we have here. I'm sure it would be a headache to organise and expensive too, insurance, track hire and so forth. Reckon with the expertise here it could be done and done well. Man, it's 10 to 4 I really should be in bed, night night.

It seems there are loads of people from RR up for trackdays, but bi-annually Bstardchild organises retro-rides attendance at Marham trackdays and only a handful of people apply, 99% of which are repeat offenders like myself and Bodieandoyle. If people want a great day of relaxed track driving for any level of driver then sign up! This autumn's sign up has come and gone but people really should look out for it come next Spring. Sorry if this seems like a random post based on the thread content but I thought it should be pointed out Curborough is a lot of fun, I've done two trackdays there as a part of the NASC springnats. It's real slippy in the wet though!

Having spoken to Bruce this weekend about future trackday options I'm locking this thread so a complete line can be drawn under what's gone before and a fresh start made in planning an event (most likely for a weekend in the Spring), taking into account everyone's advice / suggestions above.
