I'm no Pogologist but I did ask the same question to the professor himself.
Pog says due to Ebays huge national market most items left without a reserve will reach their true market value. Setting a reserve will give away the what the seller values it at and buyers will assume that is all it's worth.
I think he's right and despite my lack of success with this I would have put it more down to the market than anything else.
