Gone from complete failure (about 10% efficiency at full pedal-to-carpet operation) to working fine again, just from topping up. Now the question is how? If the fluids gone then I should at least need to bleed them after filling up, but no air seems to be in the system. There were a few bubbles up through the ressevoir initially when I filled it up but then just good spurts of fluid. Most odd. No sign of a leak round the MC or resevoir. I'm wondering if the servo is bleeding fluid off by suction and burning it in the chambers - its hooked up via the inlet manifold after all - hense I could have air only in the MC and thus not need to bleed to get full pressure back again? Any suggestions how I test this hypothesis? I don;t think theres a down stream leak as I can't see any fluid loss (although the dumb car is too low for me to get under to look very well, and its too low to get a jack under properly  and its parked on a gravel drive at the moment...
I've had plenty of brakes fail on me in my time. Perhaps a post is called for - great brake failures I have known! Any suggestions on my problem welcomed. Stupid POS.

glad your ok mate horrible init had it with the kadett before and drove straight into the back of my mate newly rebuilt mk2 cortina resulting in his car needing a whole new back end and the kadett needed the drivers side indicator lense glueing back together ;D had a mk1 escort auto do it down a little road had to use the back of a luton to stop it due to a landrover towing the biggest boat i've ever seen coming the other way a couple of my mk3 cortys have totaly lost all braking ability whilst traveling at a high rate of speed all of which got some very hard use of there gearboxes and now the cressida 's brake peddle occasionaly decides the brake presure will be in a different place resulting in some ammusing braking in traffic ;D ;D ;D

The brakes on the Mini went last year, had to run a red light and pray we didn't get hit by the massive artic lorry that was coming from our right. We sure as hell weren't stoppng so I nailed the throttle to get across the junction, used the gearbox to slow us down once we were across and waited for my cheeks to let go of the seat. Which was nice

Ive known slight leaks on a wheel cylinder cause similar problems. Loose fluid gradually from that cylinder until the master cylinders empty then end up with no more fluid in the master cylinder. Then topping up the brakes and pressing the pedal and the wheel cylinder almost self bleeding as it was letting fluid out but almost sealing itself when the pedal released.

Yeah, that's what was wrong with the mini. Girlfriend hadn't told me the brake pedal was going to the floor, she thought it was something to do with the weather. So I jump in and go scooting up the road none the wiser until I try to stop.

Had a cylinder pop on the XR4i once, but my scariest brake related incident was last year when someone emptied my bikes front brake system of fluid - it was immediately apparent when I sat on the bike the brakes werent working so no dangeouros near misses. When I examined further there was no fluid at all in the system, no wet patches where the bike had been stood and no obvious leaks. Walked to the nearest garage and bought a tub of brake fluid and a bleed kit and fixed it in the car park. I have a fair suspition who was behind that little stunt but there is no way I can prove it.

i have had no near misses / or hits with brakes....
however did once gear a ride on lawn mower to do about 40mph off road, and you could indeed drift it pretty well, the problem was the brakes where the original small disc designed to slow you from 10mph max... this disc is about 2" across and did b*gg*r all so i relied on the 6 speed box to slow me down... this was fine til i was going flat out down a hill, and the bonnet decided to open so i couldnt see where i was going...
but thats more a story of a vehicle that had no brakes from the start... and never intended on getting them. the small standard disc setup did b*gg*r all and sqeaked, so i just put some oil on it to stop the sqeak. lol.
in the end my brother managed to blow it up, making one conrod snap and take chunk out of the other (oh yes, 16hp of brings and stratton v-twin finest) and the new rods i got where too long by about a mm. its sitting in my garden as we speak.... one day....
