My breakdown cover is with my insurance. Dunno what company it's with, but it's Europe-wide and will tow me home or to my destination (I think...) just a small point to all you happy AA customers.......have any of you asked the AA what would happen if you were involved in a road traffic accident ? I think youll find that they will not recover your cars!!!! they are a breakdown service NOT accident recovery ...green flag or RAC is the way to go !!!!!!!! Yup, I was in exactly that situation years ago. I had a bump in my Merc (myone and only accident), thought I'd split the rad, and called the AA only to be told they don't do accident recovery. I've had mixed experiences with the AA. I've had one AA guy who went above and beyond after my car caught fire and I decided to continue my journey by train - he gave me a lift to the station and everything. I've also had one guy who seemed to think that unless you're an AA mechanic you shouldn't even think of opening the bonnet. He had a problem with me fitting an electric fan to my Merc, and the same guy admonished me on plugging a fault code reader into an Omega. Apparently they're only for professionals... . To be fair, he was a bit of a tit and isn't really representative of them all I'm sure. To be honest, all I really want from a breakdown service is to be towed off the motorway so I don't get raped with a fine from the po-po, or towed to somewhere I can leave the car til I can get the bits to fix it.

had a couple of bad experiences with AA so I am with Autoaid now. Not had to use em yet. Since I drive Datsuns mostly (for 20 years) I have only ever had one breakdown, and that was a crappy old car I had sold for spares and decided to drive it to the chap rather than trailer it , to use less petrol ! Rad fell apart on the M4. (And AA's rubbish offer was to tow me to the nearest petrol station, what freakin use is THAT?) I actually limped it the last 50 miles on radweld, lemonade and water scooped from the ditches at the side of the motorways, and a collection of pop bottles i got by raiding the bins at the service station.

AA treated me very well during RRG'09 due a certain slammed E28 The guys weren't bothered that it was lowered (two low loaders to get me the 200 miles home) and they took very special care getting it on and off the low loaders. We ended up getting the rear wheels on the floor and the loader pulling forwards for the last one! It's not always been roses with the AA since they thought I wasn't covered and refused to pick me up unless I paid £150 another time, turns out I was covered .

What ever one you go for, if you run an old car it's £60-70 well spent to know that should it all turn pear shaped someone will come along and scoop up your car and take you home.

I think you'll find they do depending on the level of cover you have. Yes, my AA cover includes accident recovery. Ah yes, when my GF had a smash, she upgraded her AA membership over the phone and then they were able to recover the car. I'd forgotten about that. I only ever have bare-bones cover, but it's worth paying the extra in cases like that.

Its not a breakdown, why would I chose a breakdown company to cover accident cover which my car insurance covers?

I'm with AA because it comes free with my banking. First time I've had home start...
When chosing breakdown cover make sure you look at the small print. Some breakdown insurance companies decline to recover or attend for modified or lowered cars. Some even ban grey imports or cars which are "competition prepared" etc. etc.
Read small print. No nasty surprises that way.

What ever one you go for, if you run an old car it's £60-70 well spent to know that should it all turn pear shaped someone will come along and scoop up your car and take you home. That's exactly how i see it. Often i have my two kids with me, so i can't afford to be stranded at the roadside with a busted motor. I always have mine included with the insurance (classic policies) and on the occasions i have had to use them, be it a breakdown or accident, i've always been within 50 miles of home and they've always arrived to me within an hour, the fastest being 20minutes. All I ever ask is that the car is recovered home in no worse a condition than they pick it up, and that's always been the case so-far. *touches wood*

Again it's a level of cover thing Akku - Insurers will only recover your car if you're fully comp. I suspect many on here are TPO or TPFT.

I'm with the RAC and they've always been pretty decent. Although they upped my premium this year due to having called them out lots over the last year (5+ maybe on 2 different cars.) That said they've always listened to what i've said and sent appropriate response. When i had a tyre blow out in the Toledo, the RAC man said he wasn't allowed to put my spare wheel on as it was below legal tread on the edges. So he gave me the tools and said i could do it Sorted The last one was when the cooling system blew a core plug on the Toledo, covered the M25 in steam completely, all 8 lanes!! The guy turned up and said i was probably right (said it was head gasket or similar) and towed me back on a bar. He kept forgetting i was behind him every so often (as the batt had died) so hit 70+ down the hills lol Did say i was one of the easiest tow's he's had! The worst RAC experience is also the best in a way. My Ax broke down on the M40 and they towed me to a services. The guy then stripped the carb down and cleaned it all. Then it died again so he shot off to get an ignition module (sunday afternoon!) sorted then it died again so he put a new rotor arm on, cleaned the dizzy cap and shut the bonnet. We got 5 miles before it died again. I opened the bonnet to find his work mobile in the inner wing! He came out and admitted defeat and dolly'd it home from one side of London to the other! Legend. So RAC for me renewed it at my local supermarket for half the price as well

Ive just last week bought a AA membership... Roadside and relay... cheap as chips and my dads allways had it on his bank account with lloyds before now... And when my bug blew up in bournemouth we just phoned and said its left most of its engine on the hard shoulder, they sent a truck and dragged it back to hampshire.. and that thing was pretty damn low.... Didnt bother em...

I'm with Autoaid (equity red star) never had a problem with them, always just called the call centre and they've sent someone out for me, had a couple of 200 mile recoveries no quible. Only downside is they will not cover a trailer over 18ft long - and they don't know what a Holden is, didn't stop them coming out when the thermostat stuck on the M1 though.

I recommend the AA, they have been great with me. I joined about a month ago, 2 days later my gear linkage cable snapped so I phoned them.
AA lady says "we don't have any of your details on our system" but they still sent a van out. Van driver says "your gear selector cable has snapped". I said "yes I know, that's what I told the woman on the phone." so they sent a flatbed out and took me and my crusty old carina home. This was before the first £7 monthly payment had left my bank account.

AA relay have always been good with the towtrucks. I probably average one a year.

I've gone with the £7 a month AA - It's nicer than having a random £70 come out every year when you aren't expecting it. They'll also cover me rather than the car, so I don't have to remember to change it over.
Hopefully I won't need it, but I'm driving a thrashed 17 year old french hot hatch that I've 95% put together myself from second hand parts.
Cheers for the replies - let's hope everyone get to and from the gathering without needing any assistance!
