Depends how economical and whats size you need really, a Mk2 1600 16V CRX will do 43-45mpg without difficulty and is a lot of fun to drive (much more than anything above) But they're small and really only good as a 2 seater, thought they can carry a lot of stuff with the back seat down.
If you want a 4-5 seater, 1.9td VW/Seat/Skoda or 1.9td Pug 405 do very good mileage and are cheap to keep going and will make 45-50mpg. Astra 1.7td's will also do good mileage and are cheap as chips.
Whats LPG supply like out there? If its good, and cheap, then thats a good way to go with bigger cars, smoothness of petrol, with equivalent fuel cost of diesel (in the UK anyway)

(that's why i'd prefer diesel, it'd be cool to have some big old petrol barge again but without the realistic option of lpg it's too costly) As for size I suppose i'd need at least astra/escort sort of size or bigger, the crx would be fun but I need some sort of practicality, would be nice to be able to tow my small boat comfortably too. I wouldnt mind an astra even though they're boring as feck if i could find a decent one, yeah the vw 1.9 is a good old lump, maybe a golf estate with vento front?

If you can get 45mpg out of a CRX your a better man than me! I used to have mine pinned at 8000rpms everywhere! Such a great car to drive, it just couldnt be driven slow and sensible! With the back seats down it is pretty van like - managed to get my mates drum set in the back of mine a few times, was funny pulling up to a gig and in a clown car style start yanking a massive drum set out of the back of it!

Amazing how much you can force in there isn't it! And I normally average 40-42mpg with 50/50 town/motorway driving, had it upto 46mpg at a constant 80mph on the Autobahn belive it or not! Great little cars

Why does everyone forget the Peugeot 605 SDVT there has to be some left somewhere I havn't seen one on the road here for at least 5 years, they're even rarer than that other huge french oddity the citroen XM, don't think i'd want one though, the zero spares availability would not make for a good daily driver

Passat B3. I've had loads of 'em, best for economy are the 1.8 Digifant, easily achieves 40+mpg, i've seen 53 out of a GT i used to own, and it wasn't lying, steady journey from Cumbria to Newcastle. Also the 1.6TD. It's intercooled, no rocketship mind, but they go ok once wound up. Used to get an easy 60mpg out of mine. Both cars are bulletproof too

Really not convinced of that. back on topic - If it weren't so small or perhaps a touch too new, i'd recommend the Pug 106d. Small enough to park anywhere, cheap as hell to run and when not hammering it, or loaded with tools with get 60-65mpg when tickling along. My Pug has just been pressed into service as a works van today and showing the high side of 174K did indeed return 46 mpg with the back full of tools and my 6'2" and 15 stone parked in the drivers seat

Just don't forget to pay the duty...Otherwise MK2 Cavalier, Astra, Sierra 2.3D, Peugeot 504/ 505 will all return 40 to 50mpg and all ran on special brew cooking oil/ diesel mix

Nissan Bluebird. Unloved, square, mechanically sound but they like to rust, even the basic ones had electric windows and power locks from LX on up
1.6 of mine returned an average of 40mpg to and from work and still kept up with traffic with ease. Stuck five people in it and still had plenty space for stuff in the back. Comfy too.
Cheap to buy because they have a bit of a taxicab/granddad image still. Mine cost me 150 with a month of tax and no MoT which it went through with an entire new exhaust system for sixty quid from manifold back.

there curse word to drive nosey slow and diesel does cost more than petrol Mine isn't that slow, it's actually very quiet to drive, happily sits at 80 on b roads too. Diesel here is 114.9 per litre compared to 112.9 for petrol. The petrol version of my car does 26mpg, mine does 40 driven hard and mostly laden. My maths is curse word now I'm older, but I'm sure it works out cheaper with the diesel. As for it being nosey, I've never seen it twitching it's curtains.
