I had this on my mk2 cav and it turned out to be a poor earth on the dash. No idea how, but surely worth a look?

Thanks, should have updated that bit. It's now fixed. Seemed to be a bad connection somewhere on the dash cluster.

Been busy ebaying today but a micro-update Started preparing to fit the front foglights. They came from a red car so the plastic trims looked like this: Gave them a good wet flat with 320 grit and got some rattlecan primer on: It will be a few days before I get back to it so I'll see if the red bleeds through More soon......

For a really smooth finish, go over the primer again with some 1500 grit paper before laying the top coat on!

Well, new discs and pads fitted on the front last week. Old ones were well below minimum thickness..... New accumulator sphere is next and the major water leak into the drivers side rear. Took the headlining down today and it is indeed the sunroof..... Headlining out next week

Checked the drains. All pipes are firmly affixed and clear. It seems to be leaking before the water gets to the drain pipe. It's a proper hole as the water flows nicely

Wow! i just read your whole topic and never realised there was so much love for Xantias on here I will admit although i'm a vw man myself, i do have alot of love for them. My dad owned one from 2004 to last jan, a 98 1.816v lx estate, it was a temptation model or something. I have alot of love and memories for that car, mainly being picked up from school and driving it around (private) carparks. I may also be buying it back within the next few weeks, the current owner (the person we sold it too) told me the other day that due to circumstances he will be weighing it in unless i want it back. After reading this thread and seeing the pics i don't think i can say no! I will have to sell it on once getting it back on the road, so if you know anyone! Its nice to see yours looking so smart! All the ones i see now look like old dogs Goodluck

Thanks for the comments, I used to drive them new when I worked for a Citroen dealer. Took me 15 years to get round to buying one though!
I did have a BX though which I ran for a couple of years. Nice to drive, comfortable and cheap to run. An ideal daily car.

Well, accumulator fitted today The old sphere wouldn't come off with the small chain wrench I borrowed. However, a few sharp taps with a hammer and chisel soon got it going Changing the sphere was simple enough. However, me being me I took the bleed screw right out and put it back in again. Job done, started car, it wouldn't lift and the stop light wouldn't go out Eventually I saw the ball bearing under the car:D Bleed screw out again, ball bearing in before it, started the car again and out went the stop light Car came up to normal height nicely and I then put it in high and checked and topped up the fluid level. Accidently I tested my new accumulator sphere by sitting on the rear, it levelled up nicely then when I got off, went up some more and quickly settled back to it's normal height It might just be wishful thinking but the steering feels smoother The final test will be what happens when I start it in the morning ;D ;D ;D

Might be worth checking the colour of your LHM, if its yellowy/brown you should replace it and give the filters a clean too.

I changed the LHM and cleaned the filters last year after I got the car. After todays exploits it just about has new fluid again I did consider trying hydroflush in it.

I am surprised these days what fresh fluid does to a system. Brakes is certainly one area I have noticed this occur.

Well it had the morning start up test this morning Thankfully, the stop light went out within a couple of seconds and the car came up to height nicely

Hydraulic Citroens can take an age to come up after someone's meddled with the hydraulics. Not sure if it's a fluke or not, but on my Mk1 BX, it sprang up nicely after I pushed the brake pedal. We'd tried everything to get it up. Opening the bleed screw, wiggling the steering, moving the height lever. Nothing! Tapped the brakes, the pump cut in and up we went. I've got to try re-seating the ball-bearing on the regulator next though as changing the accumulator hasn't cured a fast tick time from the pump.

The accumulator sphere is usually a nightmare to get off. The proper tool wouldn't free mine off so i just used a chisel. Made the steering feel better on my old turbo d too

Water leak and battery clamp today Started by removing the headlining: Removed the sunroof cassette. There was a lot of moisture in the roof cavity: One of the drain pipes had this in it: Oddly enough this was in the side of the car that appears dry After a test with a watering can: I was sat in the car at the time and the good news is it didn't appear to leak. I could hear the water going down the drains though So what was the problem then? After refitting the sunroof cassette I noticed the front of the sunroof was in the closed position rather low. I adjusted this as it is a simple operation. Looking at the design of it I'm wondering if it was simply that the front was too low allowing too much water past the seal and the drains couldn't cope. While I had everything apart I cleaned all the channels of any dirt to help the water flow I haven't put the headlining back in yet, it's forecast rain this week so I'm going to test it a bit more I also got the replacement battery earth clamp fitted and fully charged the battery. It started better but we will know more when I start from cold in the morning. It always started but seemed to struggle a bit.

Well she passed the morning start test ;D Much better with the new earth connection. Got the inside put together today. Also sealed the aerial with Tigerseal just in case I also replaced the noisy tailgate locking motor with one from a newer model. Of course it didn't fit So I removed the lug stopping the wiring multiplug from fitting and drilled two new mounting holes in the inside of the tailgate to mount it. Result? Success It works and the locking is much quieter

Bit more done today Replaced the door seals today with good secondhand ones. Also replaced the drivers door locking button and the interior light switch so hopefully everything is working properly. Also replaced some of the fuses as a few of them were the wrong rating
