This isn't really a new idea as such more a refining of a theme that emerges every now and again, but I hope my suggestions would make the general idea more useful, particuarly to new users and people who have seen RR cars at shows and out and about. So here's how it would work, there's a thread titled "The Cars of Retro-Rides". The only permissable posting in this thread would be a picture of the car that is set up as a clicky to the Readers Rides thread for said vehical. The post title would be changed to: ownersusername - year and car (just like the Readers Rides thread title) eg: markbognor - 1993 Nissan Micra K11 Rather than Re: The Cars of Retro-Rides This keeps posts nice and tidy and give the veiwer all the info they need, after all if they want to know more about the car or comment they can use the clicky to access the Readers Rides thread. One last thought is, prehaps we should keep it to cars that are considered finished, or a good way through their evolution - no stock ride height fatory wheeled rides withought good reason (only a suggestion - seeing as drop & rims seem to be standard practice for getting cars done). Though there is obviously scope for inclusion of really interesting and involved projects as well - dez's 'A' springs to mind but there are many many others - there are plenty of mock up pics that could be used to illustrate what the aim of the build is. I think the thread could work well as a sticky in General, or prehaps even in Readers-Rides if it takes off. One last thing, the post contents would look like this: [ url= www.thelinktoyourReadersRides ][ img ] /img ][ /url ] without the spaces. What do you think?

I likes it, though it is really something that those who can be arsed can do with readers rides anyway. Always find it most useful when people like their car in their sig

it sounds good mark, , it also might jog a few forgetten jems out of the massiveness of readers rides. a lot of the stuff in the waaaaaaaaay back numbers don't have the easy titles of the newer stuff, if you know what i mean. if a mod stickys it, ill post

I think that's a great idea Mark, I'd be happy to add my old girl - perhaps a sticky at the top of the Reader Rides board would be ideal? (if the Mods agree of course)

i like the idea, for numerous reasons. what i find on here recently is that with the massive infux of new members over the last couple of years, although there is some amazing stuff coming out of the woodwork, the overall quality is down as the good stuff is diluted by a load of drivel about near-stock late model cars. i see lots of of updates in which nothing happens. general gist of one would be something like- "yeah, here some more pics of my stock car ive just washed, but its ok cos i took them somewhere different to the last lot, oh and heres some links to some things i want to buy for it but cant afford." rubbish like that bumps the genuinely worthwhile stuff off the first page in only a couple of hours so it often gets missed. i would put one big proviso on the thread- you have to be nominated for it, you cant just post your own stuff up on it. that way the thread is made up of stuff that people think is genuinely great, not the stuff people think that other people should think is genuinely great i agree with the no 'just bought/started' threads bit though, there has to be something decent to look at. id say only 3 or 4 threads on the first page right now would be elligible- nightmares 'tina, plums tat blog, grizz transit, cobblers 106, (i havent read most of the other so cant comment really) then others spring to mind, benzboys stacker, streets escort, tonybmws stuff, maybe my A thread i suppose also, being nominated would kinda be a badge of honour that way, a nod to those whove done summat good.

I see what you mean dez, though would that make it a little bit to close to the Ooof thread with a different name. The really worthy home grown stuff does get in there. The one picture rule would cut down on the unnessasary and make it easy to scroll past what is of less interest.
It would also possibly help the most interesting stuff stay on the first page/few pages because folk would find it more easily and comment.

I've stuck a post up here so a start on it can be made. I'm sure that if it doesn't meet with Hotwire et al's approval it wont be there long.

I think it's an awesome idea but you'll need to make the instructions a little firmer/clearer or get someone to moderate it....already three of the cars posted up aren't linked to a build thread which kinda defeats the object. Not your fault....just people not reading the original post or not following what (to some) are simple instructions.
I hope it works and look forward to seeing it flourish. When I've got a car/thread worthy of it, I'll put one up myself.
Nice work Mark. ;D

I like it as a thread idea, but I do agree that it needs to be the best/most interesting rides RR has to offer. No offence to anyone who has posted in there already but I would say only half of those posted are really worthy of a spot. So there needs to be some form of moderation or voting system for the thread to work.

This reminds me of something.
It's like a 'car of the month' thread, isn't it? If it was moderated it would be anyway. Which would be a good thing - a thread with links to each car of the month (maybe one a fortnight to keep thread active) which would be a badge of honour as mentioned, and a way to have a COTM without the whole 'signature issue'.

concept is good, but soon it will become a 100 page thread with pictures, but with no search facility to find a car..
I knows it a lof of work, but someone who has time coudl do a similar based thread with small thumbnails and then group by either car model, car manf, style etc.
something like
A.
Image of car, clicky, as an avatar sized image,
B
images of cars as clicky links, all as an avatar sized image
then that way, peopel can see say a granada, open thread look for the right category, so either ford then find it, or go to G, search granada and then click the link
Keep to one locked thread so no multi paged thread and ideally have one person responsible for it.. That one person can ask for people to PM the link and a small image then that one person can update the thread..
I'd stick my neck out and offer to run/organise said thread if everyone agrees it coudl be good - update it 2/3 times a week

I agree Lawsy... I just took a look when I went over to update my build thread. Is fast becoming another 'picture thread' along the lines of MM's 'no rhyme no reason'. Kind of defeats the object of its purpose.... if folks are just going to wack 'em up randomly.

Personally, I don't like it. I stickied it because it didn't fit in with the rest of the Reader's Rides board and didn't see the point of it being there if it just disappeared.
The Reader's Ride board is often the first place you go when you discover a new forum and our seemingly OTT policy on titling and content of threads is designed with the newly discovered browser in mind. You arrive, see the quality (helped by not seeing pages of 'my new rims', 'my red Mk1 in Basingstoke' and 'new pics of the beast' or whatever) and happily spend hours or days checking out the cars. In my opinion 'The cars of RR' thread already exists - it's just that it's 180 pages long and takes weeks to read....which I consider to be a good thing.

Dez has a point in that when a project is completed it disappears off of most peoples radar on the build thread board. So is very difficult to find some good cars once the build stage is over. Some one said earlier that it should be completed cars with a link to the build thread..... that makes sense to avoid duplication and keeps it simple too. To do it properly it would need a 'Gallery' section classified from A - Z without rediculously oversized pics, and just a link to the build thread. Customs and rods would probably need to be under 'custom' or 'rod', if the car was a build that could not be recognised as belonging to any particular manufacturer.

A link to your own car's Reader's Ride thread in your signature works well.

I agree with rmad.
The interesting reader's rides naturally float to the of the post. Sure they may drop down a bit after a while, especially if the owner doesn't keep the post up to date, but if they don't keep it up to date, or have dropped off the forum altogether, is it worth highlighting the car anyway? This is an ever changing, dynamic site afterall. If you like it you can bookmark it.
One thing I like about this place is that everyone is treated equally - there is no singling out of one particular person or car as being the star of the show. We can all choose what we like and what we want to keep our eye on.
Anyway, I didn't think modified cars were ever "finished", more "I like it just now, but might change my mind next week". ;D

A link to your own car's Reader's Ride thread in your signature works well. and to top off, i still think thats the best option if the readers ride thread is dead n buried on page 180, then its not only because its finished, its because maybe the OP is no longer a member, doesnt own it, so if the threads read and commented then it may not got answered anyway
