I'd come to the same conclusion but now have been warned off decking the block by some old-skool ex-REME guys
Whats the problems decking the block? Waterjackets? As a 9-10:1 compression ratio is needed what do you reackon its going to run like at 6:1? As for the LPG carb it would be interesting to see how that set up works, I was looking at a mixer plate for the carb, Tilley tech do a lot of LPG stuff, I am watching your progress on this!! Good job so far, Cheers.

Lovely work indeed.
The only thing I would be looking to do if it were mine (and it is no criticism whatsoever)would be to panel in the sides of the bed around the wheels to make it look a little more streamlined and elegant like the old transporters rather than like a flat bed lorry.

blotIt was suggested that I'd have all sorts of problems with breaking into the waterjacket, studs, rockers and pushrods so I'm going to leave it and get it on the road this year whatever the efficiency/fuel consumption but gas will help. Next winter we may tear down the engine and have a play. zirconI have a whole notebook of "What I'd do better next time" and your suggestion is one of them however the practicalities of easily removing the huge wheels come into play. For example it became apparent last weekend that with a little more forethought I could have mounted steps to allow easy access to the back of the bed. DOH! The lack of weekend action is due to the incipient arrival of Christmas and with Dangerous and the GAK being away. One possibly interesting development is that to gauge the level of interest for a small series of these, we are tentatively negotiating with Goodwood for a stand at FOS 2014. The longer I leave it the less chance of it happening but if there is some space left at the end of April in some forgotten corner then it can be "quite cheap" (their words) and it needs to be. Perhaps we can have an RR corner with a couple of sofas It's nice to see the love for old transporters out there in the rarefied world of auctions. £1.8 million of love to be precise or £8.8 million for the lot see hereand here is an interesting picture of how it was done in the old days (thanks Brian Burgess)

it is easy for me to suggest different things from my armchair, I didn't want to take anything away from what you have achieved though - it is a massively successful project in my opinion!

well as its knocking on (no pun intended) for 110 RON you could use a bit of "dynamic" compression with MS though? i.e catering size portion of ignition advance. two maps for petrol/propane

"Tinkering" will have to come later

Found a possible solution to the airbag/shock link interference problem. It seems that from '57 they had an official telescopic conversion so I'm trying to persuade the guy who's selling the axles off this to let me have the shock brackets and the obviously redundant bump stop legs just in case I feel like removing leaves from the springs and going full air on the back end. The shockers don't look to be up to much but there's NOS stock on Evilbay

Thanks for all the kind comments guys I had an email out of the blue today from a guy with a Bedford SB coach like the one below and he's converting to gas and has offered to share his experience. You just gotta love Retro people. So I had a very merry Christmas email from the gentleman above regarding his gas installation experience. He decided to get it done in Chester for his own reasons and drove the unconverted coach up from London to Cheshire as a bit of a run With the gas conversion done he then drove from Chester to Poole, 250 miles in 6 1/2 hours cruising at 47(ish)mph and he got stopped in one services by the police but only for a photo ! He's done some rough calculations of pre and post conversion and they are looking like the bus was averaging just under 10 MPG or around 70p a mile pre-conversion but post-conversion he reckons it's around 40p a mile or the equivalent of around 16 MPG which is fantastic. He also knows where there is a Commer TS3 (think Ecurie Ecosse transporter) and hopefully I'm meeting him tomorrow to see the coach.

Not much to report but scored this off another forum and used once to test an LPG system. I like the SU simplicity but have I been a mug? Anyone using this here? BLOS LPG carb It's an SU Jim but not as we know it Just about to order one of those from Poland - don't expect the person you got it from has anymore?

Regret he only had one They're supposed to be very good (thats a recommendation from an LPG installer I know), and they're a viable cheaper alternative to gas injection on some engines, if not well I'll join you in the mug club

Saturday off I go to our local pneumatics distributor for some valves and fittings for the airbags. These are temporary for testing and setup and the finished system will be plumbed to the side panels for easy maintenance. While Dangerous and the GAK were getting on with the roof edge mouldings I modified the the old bump stop legs to clear the valve fittings It helps to be able to borrow kit like this as my Clarke pillar drill wouldn't even look at it A quick dive in the stainless scrap bin yielded a couple of 16mm thick blanks that I could turn into base plates for the airbags. An hour on the lathe had them the right diameter and flat. A quick trial fit of the assembled airbag, spacer and bump stop legs prove we have an unforeseen clearance problem between the airbag valve and the chassis so we turn the bump stop legs 180 degrees and use the traveller's toolkit to modify the front of the bump stop leg. It fits and fits here also The new toys; a stretcher and shrinker and the results. Some of the most complicated pieces on the truck as nothing on the roof edges are square or 2-dimensional. All other bits are are flat stock so should go a lot easier. Can't wait until next week

Excellent stuff! Are the bags going to be clamped to the spring somehow or are they just going to bear on that top leaf?

Excellent stuff! Are the bags going to be clamped to the spring somehow or are they just going to bear on that top leaf? Seth that's an awfully good question. I intend to either mill out a groove or attach a bit of square channel so the base can't move from side to side but I have been 'told' that's all I need to do but I feel a couple of long caphead bolts screwed into the base plate with a cross bar clamping the whole thing to the base of the spring pack. This coming weekend we're hopefully going to try to move the shocker link arms so there's no chafing on the airbag and if successful will be able to position the airbag bases properly.

looks brilliant.
all the bags I've ever worked on have had bolts on either end even though most would have probably stayed where they were in normal operation, wouldn't want to lose that lump of stainless is a bag blew though!
